I always liked that when Zuko introduces himself, he says that he is Ursa's son before Ozai's.

I like Zuko's parallel with Lee. Zuko misinterpreted his mum's parting words. "Never forget who you are".. She was referring to how she loved that he never gives up even when things were tough. But Zuko thought she wants him to remember his birthright. When Zuko gave the knife to Lee, he wanted Lee to never give up without a fight. He wanted Lee to remain strong even though his brother is gone. When the Earth Kingdom thugs came to demand food from the family, he remembered Zuko's word and wanted to fight them.. literally. /// Zuko alone also alluded to him being all alone in the palace after his mum disappeared and Iroh was not there as well.

Not only were there years of oppression and occupation, there are probably also very personal tragedies involving families being torn apart by the war; especially now with the brother being captured as a POW and will probably die. I think it is a very human and realistic reaction to finding out that someone whom you had thought as a "friend" is actually hiding his identity and he is the face of your sufferings.
@nucleargandhi27093 жыл бұрын
Exactly. For an Earth Kingdom peasant, whose family has long endured the suffering of the war, a firebender is no less dangerous than a monster.

Iroh definitely was a bad guy in the past. He was a fire nation general. He was part of a oppressive regime. He fought in an expansionist war. He's not a bad person but he probably did a bunch did evil stuff. To please his dad and because that was what was expected of him.
@kilpta47463 жыл бұрын
I think it’d be more accurate to say he was a bad person. But he grew through his spirit world journey.

Azula is conniving and manipulative and perfectly willing to lie to get what she wants, but sometimes the truth hurts more than a lie. It was also important for Zuko to be rejected by the villagers. He was still under the delusion that the Fire Nation was righteous and that the people of the world would love and worship him as their future ruler.

Azula only accepts perfection. In the first episode Azula appears in, she’s practicing lightning bending. Her stance and execution are perfect, but a hair comes out of place. Azula sees that as unacceptable. She gets irritated, fixes her hair, and starts again. So I would say she still does need to practice/train, she just has a lot of natural talent. But her expectation of perfection means she can’t accept anything less.

Based on this episode I feel Ozai banished Zuko for Azula. If you look at it, Zuko and Azula's situations are very similar to that of Iroh and Ozai: Soft and good nature first born who was able to be the heir just because he was the oldest, and a younger more capable sibling who was unfairly robbed of his inheritance (in Ozai's opinion). Maybe one of the reasons Ozai was so cruel to Zuko was because he was bitter about his own father's treatment of him and tried to make it up for Azula whom he sees more of himself in (Azulon did seemed to dismissed Ozai and favor Iroh) . Getting rid of of Zuko would clear ways for Azula, his preferred heir.

That always confused me too when the old man says "Liar you're not a prince you're an outcast! His own father burned and disowned him!" Like okay but doesn't that mean he's against the leader of the fire nation>?

ozai's a terrible guy in every respect, but he doesn't frown because he's biased; he frowns because he knows zuko isn't as talented as azula, and zuko's performance isn't going to be consistent with the image ozai is trying to present to the fire lord.

I don’t want to give child Azula a knife. Shes violent with her firebending here, and I don’t really care that she wants it because she doesn’t need it like Zuko does. Zuko was gentle and sensitive and that caused problems with Ozai being the one who had all of the power in the family. Also, he’s not good with his firebending like Azula is. I think that Ozai banished Zuko, just so Azula would be his heir instead of Zuko. Iroh sent them war souvenirs, not things from a store in Ba Sing Se, wondering what they want. I don’t think Iroh is sexist for sending Zuko a knife and Azula a doll. I can imagine that Iroh didn’t grow closer to Azula after she called him a quitter and a loser for leaving Ba Sing Se after the death of his son. I wouldn’t. Azulon clearly favored Iroh. Azulon had no need for a second son, surely not when Iroh was shaping up to be a fine heir. Ozai saw himself as the one fit to rule. Iroh was the seemingly perfect older brother who got praise, attention and the birthright he didn’t deserve and whom Ozai hated and was covered with bitter passion. In Zuko and Azula, Ozai saw Iroh and himself, the weakling heir and the younger child truly fit to rule. Ozai becomes the father he wanted his own to be by rejecting the weak, soft firstborn and training the powerful and worthy second born as his heir, with his own children he rights the wrongs Azulon visited upon him. Iroh was accomplishing things when Ozai was still in diapers, probably wanting to please his father. That’s probably why Ozai was sent out to search the Avatar to capture as to rival Iroh being nicknamed the Dragon of the West. Ursa was able to be a parent to Azula in this episode and that meant scolding and punishing her, something that Ozai was truly lacking due to their vastly different parenting styles on what they value. I don’t think Azula heard what is wrong with that child because it would have gotten back to her processing it, but it didn’t so. Azula has friends to play with, which Zuko seemingly does not. With Iroh and Lu Ten gone fighting, and Ozai doesn’t want anything to do with him, then there would be no one else that would given Zuko the time of day besides Ursa. Plus, Ursa had to protect him from overt abuse by Ozai. I’m one of those people that believes that Ursa loves Azula.
