I love how, as opposed to most shows(especially anime) Toph's abilities never get retroactively weaker she really is good enough to singlehandedly take down a group of professional benders. At this point in the story i think Toph is genuinely the best bender in the whole gang and as amazing as the others have gotten over the seasons it's now a matter of catching up to her. A really nice turn now that we've just started to see how great that visit to the northern water tribe was for everyone.

Aang is an extremely young master airbender, and like we saw in this episode his skills as an airbender give him a big advantage over Toph's style of earthbending. If he wanted to he could attack her from the the air without hardly ever touching the ground, denying her of the vibrations she needs to see. With that in mind he's at least on par with Toph.

And three, it's not a spoiler because we're outright told that the only things she was formally taught was basic moves from Master Yu. It's not like the badger moles sat her down and said "okay to do this move you need to make this motion with your hands and feet". She observed them and created an earthbending style based off of them, which is what being "self taught" means. It is not degrading, it just means she's different.

(Spoilers below) Toph was taught by the badger moles because they favored her and let her watch and learn. Animals have souls and a wisdom of their own. They are sentient. This is not widely believed because most people think of animals as lesser than. But in ancient times it was believed that animals had their own wisdom. I follow the old religion and study these beliefs so of course I think completely different than most modern people. Toph was taught as she said later on in the show, she literally said she learned from them so you saying "uhh no she wasnt uhh they animals and she just uhh copied them" is wrong and your modern thinking making you arrogant and dismissive. Anyway, go on with thinking that way and never changing your mind. I really feel sorry for you, I'm not even mad. Hope you widen your perspective. Also...shes not just different. She's better. i love how Imon noticed Toph's stance cuz that's also what interest me. while other Earth-benders use big movements, she uses very minimum movements but didn't waste any move, in fact her movements got bigger impact yet so precise on the target. you will love ATLA even more if you put your attention to the combat movements which is very martial arts based and very beautiful. not to mention they also got seriously great story-line. been over a decade since last time i watched it but i still love it as if i just watched it yesterday 🥰

So about the stances. Earthbending is loosely based on Hung Gar - which is basically a mix of Crane and Tiger. Toph's stance isn't, as she doesn't use Earthbending like most, so instead her's is based on Northern Mantis.

Toph's earthbending movements are still the coolest of the series. The fact that she uses a different martial arts style than even other earthbenders is magnificent. And it's so perfect. The movements of the praying mantis style she uses are so succinct and sure and perfectly timed, it fits her personality perfectly--she isn't here to play, she's here to win. And they just look. So. Toph was originally supposed to be this loud and big macho dude as opposed to the little blind girl we see here, but Bryke (Mike and Bryan) were eventually convinced by head writer Aaron Ehasz to go with this Toph and it was honestly a fantastic choice in the end! Despite the disability, Toph shows us just how capable and badass she still is and I love her for that. The Boulder was also obviously based on Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) and Bryke intended to invite him to voice the character as well, but due to scheduling conflicts I believe, that wasn't possible. So instead, we got Mick Foley! Also, Toph's earthbending is different from that of Hung Gar (which is the typical style for earthbenders in general). Her style is that of the Southern Praying Mantis, which is a close range style that focuses the arms while keeping leg work to a minimum, using low and short range kicks. Practitioners strengthen the arms and keep them extended in order to reduce the recoil needed to gather energy for the next strike.

Not letting your 12 yr old daughter travel the world with a group of kids she just met is completely justified (even if one of them is the Avatar) but her dad clamping down on what little freedom Toph had, definitely isn't. I get parent's desire to protect their disabled child. But after the dad saw Toph is far more capable of taking care of herself than he ever dreamed possible, that should've started a conversation about how much protecting she really needs and even letting her make friends with kids in the nearby town.
