Azula is the embodiment of Machiavellianism. She's an extremely powerful bender, yet her biggest strengths are how calculating, clever, and astute she is. 2:40 - This is actually something I really like about Avatar's portrayal of Zuko because they nail it on the head. Victims of abuse often lapse back, they seek approval and forgiveness for a wrong they did not commit, and it's really hard to break free, with many pitfalls and traps on the road. Sometimes it feels like it's two steps backwards for each step forwards, but it's not. Every little bit helps towards the eventual goal of freedom. Zuko may have lapsed, but we all know it won't be permanent. He IS on the right path, he just stumbled and fell for a while, but he can pick himself up and move on.
@peteryang5056 Жыл бұрын
Exactly this! Recovery from a lifetime of abuse is not a linear path, nor is it something that you get to by sheer volume of argument (even loving, supportive argument like Zuko receives from Uncle Iroh). It's a long, slow process filled with second-guessing and backsliding and emotional turmoil. And in Zuko's case, it's not just his abusive upbringing, but also years of manipulation by his sister, a horrific moment of trauma at the hands of his father, and a lifetime of growing up in a propagandistic regime. It's a lot to get past for anyone, and Zuko at the end of Season 2 was only at the very early stages of realizing that things weren't right.
@mattiaachille23311 ай бұрын
Not really, he undermined his path to recovery several times. If Aang had died back in the cave or if Combustion Man did kill team Avatar while they were in the fire nation, then he wouldn’t have had the chance to redeem himself. He was never outright bad obviously but his bad decisions risked his own recovery constantly; to the point that he was impossibly lucky to have had the chance to finally stick to his true self (that was buried so much under the abuse and hardships) and become the Fire Lord he always wished to be. I love Zuko but people really give him too much leeway. In real life anyone would be proud to see Zuko finally break free of his shackles but anyone would be bitter at the fact that it took him so many mistakes and almost costed the world several times for him to finally choose good. Not to mention that he betrayed Iroh and ANYTHING could have happened to him. They could have executed him and Zuko would have died in an impossible attempt to save him because Zuko wouldn’t have let Iroh die. And his mistakes could have been fatal for him and those around him several times during the series

But we nonetheless have a mark signifying Ozai’s evil, it’s just not on him… it’s on *Zuko’s* face. Which is a really poignant nuance. As Bryke have *confirmed* that the scar wouldn’t have been healed by the Spirit Oasis water (which we see from Aang’s scar that’s no less horrendous), it’s telling how bad it is how his father marked him that way.

The reason why Mai says, "I didn't ask for your life's story" was because she saw that Zuko's mind was going to a dark place. She asked him how he was feeling, expecting him to say he was happy and excited, but instead he says he's anxious and scared. She derails that train of thought and instead gets him to focus on the present and on her. She wasn't being rude or callous - she was being empathetic and loving, in her own Mai way.

I really do feel Azula is covering ALL her bases giving Zuko the credit for "killing" the Avatar. 1. As she insinuates, it's an insurance policy. If Aang isn't dead, now it's Zuko's fault. 2. It's incentive for Zuko to stay in line. Since Azula knows (or guesses) that Zuko knows that Aang possibly survived, she's (accurately) predicting he will do all he can to keep the Avatar down. She knows Zuko has not yet actually betrayed the Fire Nation, but she also knows he's been with Iroh a long time and that Iroh has no reason to be loyal and the disposition to defect. She also knows the Fire Nation has heretofore given Zuko a lot of reasons to defect. She's using the carrot-and-stick here, holding Zuko between his desires and his fears: If he continues to work against the Avatar and keeps everything quiet, he can have everything he wants (to a point; I don't think Azula actually wants Zuko to end up Fire Lord). If his loyalty wavers, he will lose everything once again. Motivating loyalty through fear is Azula's favorite way to operate. 3. Here we get to slightly messier, deeper motivations. By giving Zuko the credit for Aang's "death," Azula also covers her own butt with their dad for her own desire to have her brother back instead of imprisoning him with Iroh or worse. She gives up a little of her own glory, though she shouts to the rooftops her brilliance in planning and executing the coup, and her father accepts her unilateral decision to be lenient with Zuko. Zuko absolutely is the unfavorite there. Azula can't seem like she wants him back for his own sake, because she likes having him around, even if it's just to mess with. He has to perform for their father. Azula tells a story, and she gets something else she wants. Zuko never sees this side of her, but it absolutely exists. Her concern over his being thought a conspirator is completely genuine. Ozai genuinely couldn't care less about Zuko and even despises him. Azula wants her brother back from exile, doing what he's supposed to be doing, dating her friend, and most probably a willing part of her entourage, though she also absolutely intends to continually humiliate and tease him. She is a narcissistic sociopath, but she's also his little sister. There is quite possibly a small, small part of her that does want to help him out. (If he stays in line.) Azula would be unlikely to admit to this. But I do think she has several calculated motivations for acting the way she does here.

In terms of Katara and her father, I think what Katara struggled with was how conflicted she felt. If she just felt abandoned and thought that what her father leaving to fight the Fire Nation was doing was wrong and unnecessary, it would've been easier to process. However, she _understood_ why her father had done what she had done. Which then left her being unable to understand why she continued to feel angry and betrayed all the same. Which then leads to people feeling like they are wrong - or being selfish, etc - for feeling that way. Also, I wonder.... I feel Azula's warning Zuko to be careful when sneaking to visit Iroh shows that Azula is perfectly capable of being kind and caring to others without any ulterior motive.... just so long as there is no real benefit to her to _not_ be kind and caring to others.

I don't think they ever bring attention to it, but a great detail the artists did is that Aang has a scar on the bottom of his foot to match the one on his back, it's where Azula's lightning left his body to ground. It shows up a handful of times in the rest of the show.

Specifically, the comic "Katara's Diary" tells her perspective after the fall of Ba Sing Se, where they reunited with Hakoda and it was Sokka's idea to destroy their own ships as to lower the guard in the Fire Nation ship they captured. And in "It's only natural", after the fall of Ba Sing Se, Earth King Kuei, Bosco and Sokka have a few talks, Kuei sees that Bosco struggles to be a normal bear as he was sheltered his whole and realizes that himself is just the same, they both know nothing about how the world works and it reflected in his ineptitude to rule. I love the parallel this episode makes between fathers and their relationships with their kid. In the end of Season 2, we Hakoda reassure his faith in Sokka and show that he ALWAYS believed he was a capable warrior AND leader. It was just that instead of joining the fleet, he was protecting their village. And in this episode we see Hakoda comfort and be there to support Katara. Never reprimanding her, never cutting her short. He let her feel her emotions and air her frustrations, even at his sake. And then he made sure to let her know HOW much she and Sokka meant to him, how much he thought of them while away, how much he hurt over not being with them. Hakoda let his kids be vulnerable and he let himself be vulnerable. They are a family that has been split by war, but they're still as strong as ever with love being the foundation Then you have Ozai, who abused and banished his own son from his own nation and only accepts him back and considers him redeemed when Zuko's accomplished HIS lofty goals. When HE and Azula toppled the last remaining Earth Kingdom stronghold, when HE "killed" the Avatar He could've lived life without Zuko and would've been perfectly content. Heck, the quest for the Avatar was basically a fool's errand. An impossible carrot of hope to dangle in front of Zuko to keep out of his hair. For Ozai, his love has to be earned. For Hakoda, the love was ALWAYS there, no matter what. TL;DR Hakoda is father goals.

Book 3, Episode 1: I love that they waited until season 3 to show us Ozai's face completely. And he just looks like a normal dude. Not anything particularly evil. And I love that he is voiced by Luke Skywalker and I can't wait to see Daniel Dae Kim bring him to life in the Netflix Live Action. Book 3, Episode 2: Ah, yes, the _Footloose_ episode with Katara's "Do-Me" eyes. Also, this episode proves that Aang is a delinquent. Also, Aang actually wears the bandanna upside-down so it still looks like an arrow.

The pre-show discussion about Zuko; about the disappointment over his betrayal of Iroh and the speculation that maybe he plans to work from the inside or to try to influence and change his father, and that he didn't just do all that he did during the Season 2 finale just in the hopes of getting back into the good graces of his father.... *_The copium is real._* 😂😂 All I can say is that we've all been there. I love the detail that Aang took on the name Kuzan in school. Back in the Blue Spirit episode in Book 1 after Zuko helps Aang escape, Aang tells Zuko about his Fire Nation friend Kuzan he used to visit and get in and out of trouble with 100 years ago. I am certain that Kuzan would love to know his name lives on in the legend of the mysterious new kid who defied the teachers, beat up the school bully and held a secret dance party before disappearing as quickly and mysteriously as he arrived.

7:26 The reincarnation cycle breaks if he dies while in the Avatar state and there won't be another avatar. Avatar Roku told this to Ang in season 2 episode 1. Ang got really lucky with the spirit water. Cool detail; Fire nation is the only Nation with so many female guards. with so many of their men at war and dying, they have to conscript women into their military considering they are just one nation fighting the whole world. I love when stuff like this have a logical reason and not just empowerment, we saw how traditional other nations are.

My favorite part about the zuko talking to iroh scene is how it’s framed, every scene of zuko talking looks like he’s behind the bars and not iroh because of zuko turmoil going on
@IamnotJohnFord Жыл бұрын
Someone may have pointed this out already. Aang was killed. He was about as dead as you can get-about. But, their are levels of death. In the medical field there is Clinical death and Biological death. Clinical death is when your heart stops, and you stop breathing. This can be for a bunch of different reasons. Getting fried with lightning is definitely one of those reasons. Lightning could easily stop your heart, and it can also cause all kinds of physical damage as the charge can damage any tissue it travels through. This process is reversible sometimes if live saving techniques are performed. If not, clinical death converts to biological death. Biological death is when brain function ceases. This process is irreversible. Aang was clinically dead for the 1-4 minutes it took for Katara to use the spirit water. So, Aang is still Aang. If she'd waited just a few minutes later then there would have been no bringing him back.

I think Katara's feelings are just feeling hurt about her father leaving in her formative years but also leaving likely no more than a couple years after the death of her mother and Katara may have still been grieving that loss or just starting to pick up the pieces after and then she basically lost her father too but this time he chose to leave and wasn't just taken from her.

people say "it's a lie", but i continue to hold that the devastating thing about azula is that she *doesn't* always lie. she simply says whatever she perceives to be in her best interest, sometimes completely indifferent as to whether it's true or not.
@SunlessNick Жыл бұрын
In a way, Azula doesn't really lie at all - she decrees. Azula and Zuko have been abused by Ozai all their lives, one aspect of which was being taught that truth is a matter of the authority of the person telling it, rather than what's really factually true. Zuko's halfway through unlearning it, but has fallen back. Azula thinks she can just order things to be true and they will be.
@sirmoonslosthismind Жыл бұрын
@@SunlessNick nah, that implies a donald-trump-like detachment from reality that i don't see. azula recognizes objective truth. she knows that she doesn't always speak it. but she's not a pathological liar.

Being the product of a narcissist, I completely understand Zuko's difficulty letting go of a foundational human need....The love of a parent. We as a society are blessed to have this show as a learning tool of how to be a better person. To see what unconditional empathy and compassion looks like has been a tremendous blessing to me in my recovery from the emotional neglect and abuse I received. Its my hope that everyone who views this masterpiece in storytelling learns the same lessons. For the sake of future on this planet. Namaste.

Something I love about The Headband episode: it shows how much of their own culture and history Fire Nation citizens have lost since the war started. They're fed pro-war lies and propaganda, and anything not related to the war (lke dancing) is suppressed. They don't know who they are anymore, outside of being obedient servants to the Firelord.

I don't think it's ever called it in universe but... we call them "The Gaang". Edit: The Jet thing had nothing to do with Nickelodeon, Nickelodeon hated Avatar, it was the show runners who felt it didn't need to be seen. "Older" watchers (it was designed with 12ish as the target audience which is why the show continually has nuance but isn't so complex that you can't just turn off your brain when watching if you want to) could likely pick up on the interaction involving Toph at the end where Jet says something like "I'll be fine..." and she whispers to Sokka "He's lying...".

Katara looks so good in her Fire Nation garb. Best she looks in the entire series. The hand-painted oil backgrounds in scenes in this show are some of the best I have seen in animation. I believe the painting was done in Korea when this show was on. I like that it is not just generic backgrounds. When you go back and rewatch the series after you know the story, you can really appreciate the backgrounds more.

To be fair to the Earth King, he'd been completely sheltered away from anything war-related. It's not like he had much to contribute in terms of strategic planning anyway, and he no longer had any resources to lend to the cause, so yeah... Just from a strategic point of view he was pretty much useless. Leaving to travel the world and learn about it and the people inhabiting it, much like Zuko did in Book 2, really was the best course of action for him. I don't agree with people who argue that the Earth King is dumb, but he's too naive and ignorant to be relied on for anything until he's actually gotten to experience the world for good or bad.

ive said this on other reaction videos before, but the contrast between fathers in The Awakening, it's the best. Zuko reunites with Ozai after all this time, in the throne room lit up with flames as decoration, and theres just no love there. anything Zuko gets from his father is purely conditional, Zuko's just another piece on the chess board for his father even after his "redemption". then you have Katara and Hakoda on the deck of the ship, in the cold and dark, and theres more warmth between the two of them in those two minutes than theres even been between the Fire Lord and Crown Prince. plus, the framing in every shot where Zuko visits Iroh makes it look like Zuko's behind the bars, when Iroh's the one actually in the cell -chefs kiss-

Iroh is obviously disappointed in Zuko, but I don't think he's holding back his advice out of anger. He's just hoping that Zuko will make the right decision on his own without his advice. Otherwise, he'll just have Iroh to blame if anything goes wrong. Without Iroh's advice, he'll have to blame himself.

so, something someone had commented on before, the reason the animation of this show compared to others is so different, especially the action scenes (or in The Headband, the dancing), is how well the footwork is animated. Most other animation will keep the action at waste high, but Avatar you see full-body, really making the action impressive to look at
