I've never noticed how clever the cut at 10:56 is, when it flashes from Katara and her father's emotional reunion/reconciliation to Zuko and his father's cold and distant reunion. Really magnifies how terrible and absent Ozai is as a father (if the burning of his own son's face didn't already push that point across).

@@doppio2378SPOILERS!!! Nope, sorry buddy. Ozai is his father. Zuko speculated that Ozai wasnt for a short while when he learned that Ursa had another lover before Ozai, named Ikam. But when he reunited with Ursa and met Ikam and asked them about it, they both confirmed that Ozai is in fact Zuko's father, pretty much saying in so many words and still keeping it PG that Ursa and and Ikam never made love prior to Ursa's arranged marriage with Ozai, thus dismissing any speculation that Zuko is Ikam's offspring rather than Ozai. Ozai is Zuko's father.

I don't think Azula knows for sure that aang is alive, but she's covering her bases. If he's dead then sharing the glory costs her nothing and gains her a brother, if he's not then Zuko takes all the blame.

@@Pablo360able She has more depth than that. Buried under her sadism and the emotional neglect from Ozai, she still cares about Zuko in her way. She actually looks out for him a few times in this season before he leaves to join the Gaang. She _is_ covering her bases, but now that her brother is home, she is seizing the opportunity to have a family again as much as Zuko is. Difference is, she doesn't have Zuko's perspective and experience of the outside world.

One important thing to remember in the context this episode and Katara's deal with her dad. This originally aired right around the height of the Iraq war. There were a good number of families whose dads had left for war, and a whole lot of Nickelodeon viewers who knew exactly how Katara felt, and why. This show is amazing for a number of reasons, but stuff like this is why it had SUCH a strong resonance with its original audience.

Love the "honour" line from Aang and fading to Zuko. Zuko has his honour back, but he can't even look at himself in the mirror anymore. Also, the juxtaposition between the two fathers, Hakoda and Ozai, talking to their kids: Hakoda loves his children unconditionally while Ozai gives Zuko a speech about his pride in his son betraying Iroh.

Its interesting because what that transition actually tells us is not that Zuko has his honor back, but rather that he hasn't returned his honor to himself. Just as Aang's honor is lost through a perceived failure of his own (an illusion of the mind), so too is Zuko's honor, though returned to him in public, he still does not award himself it internally as he still perceives his failure, not with the avatar but with Iroh (the person he truly wishes to receive appraisal from). In so doing, we see that it is not a contrast but a parallel state of affairs.

The whole thing how Aang/Zuko kind of flipped this season in terms of their journeys (and that scene at 9:04 ) is something that blows me away every time I watch it. Especially when you remember that the last episode was titled "The Crossroads of Destiny". Their paths were heading right at each other, and then they crossed and now they're at the opposite sides that they began on.

So really tho Aang made the wave that he was surfing on, that wasn’t Yue. But what Yue did was actually crazier, she calmed the entire storm that was happening and stopped all the waves, the whole ocean flattens out as she appears. Always felt this scene was under appreciated and I think it is the reason Roku shares his past with Aang 5 episodes later. Just my piece on it tho maybe I’m just looking too deep at it.

I feel like Azula doesn't know for sure but she loses less by giving the glory to Zuko. She is the prized daughter, she already had enough accolades from her Father. She chased the Avatar to the ground. She infiltrated BaSingSe undetected. And then captured the uncapturable city. On top of that she still completed her original mission of bring in her uncle and brother to the Fire Nation. She has nothing to lose if the Avatar is alive. So what? He is the Avatar she just needs to try harder next time. But she gains a lot for the Avatar being alive. Zuko is disgraced and she can then be the upper hand permanently. Either way she's a winner and that's how she operates. She plays it so she has a chance to win no matter what happens.

Zuko’s interactions in this episode are kind of contrasted with that of OG Team Avatar (Katara, Sokka, and Aang). Aang wants to reclaim his honor, whereas Zuko has done it already (or at least what he originally perceived as his honor) yet it doesn’t sit right with him = the obvious one Sokka and Katara’s dynamic as brother and sisters (who love, help and trust each other), in comparison to Zuko and Azula’s dynamic (which is just a whole bunch of hate, envy and manipulation). Katara and her dad (who’s apologizing to Katara for leaving and abandoning her and Sokka) to Zuko and his dad (who praises him like a soldier and gives no apology despite the fact that he scarred and BANISHED him). It kinda foreshadows his transition later in the season and his dynamics with those three afterwards (and the adventures they end up going on with them). This may have been obvious, but I’m just thinking about it.

Wow, my jaw honestly dropped when this was said at 19:55 - it's so true!! This show is seriously so well written in terms of parallels etc. It's shown especially through Aang and Zuko. Aang says he needs his honour back because he feels as if he let the world down and failed because of the result of the Fire Nation, and so he then has to hide his identity from them. It instantly cuts to Zuko and his scarred side who has supposedly regained his honour and is now in the public eye of the Fire Nation and by his father's side - everything he always wanted, but he is not feeling like himself anymore. They have completely swapped destinies. They literally both need each other to balance the other out and bring peace to the world. Just unbelievable.

Fun fact, the Fire Nation officer who stops the Gaang at 5:26 is voiced by Mark Hamill. He voices Ozai using a lower-pitched version of his Joker voice, and this is just his normal voice. He does this a few times in series he is in. Starting in Batman: the Animated Series when he first appeared as Ferris Boyle in the Mr. Freeze episode, "Heart of Ice". He later did the Joker because they wanted to bring him back. So now, he just sometimes plays a major character in a show by putting on a voice, and then does a more minor character with his normal voice.

The issue is that it was said that it would be soon, it wasn't soon, and no attempt was made to say "hey sorry it's not soon anymore" before this week. That's just rude, man. Next thing you know, we'll be getting an episode only once every two weeks, with no heads up, and no acknowledgements on not getting a heads up. So if you were expecting once a week, then too bad. And if you were expecting them to actually *say* that it's not gonna be once a week anymore, also too bad. It's funny that someone pointed out that katara voice sound different, that was the actual voice of her actress. She was on a show called parenthood and she always used that voice. The voice from parenthood and atla is quite different

zukos storyline is so strong. It is just perfectly written. A lot of the character stories are amazing but Zukos story, also in relation to azula and iroh makes it super unic.

What I always liked about the character design of Ozai is that they waited to show his face, showing the audience that for all intents and purposes, he was a monster. Then they finally reveal his face and... he’s just a normal guy. Granted, he’s drawn to look good-looking since he’s nobility, but he just looks normal, which I think makes it all the more effective. It’s just a guy who happens to be a terrible, terrible person. The suspense is incredibly well-written, hyping the audiences response to the final reveal, making rewatches of it interesting because you can look at it with a more analytic eye and see that what we’re shown isn’t all that groundbreaking, he’s a guy who looks kind of look Zuko and Azula. I could go on about how well-done the camera angles are, constantly making Zuko look literally up to him, not showing Ozai’s face when Zuko starts to feel inferior (as if Zuko isn’t worthy of looking at him), etc. But there are lots of videos out there that cover it really well and I’d be here for a good 2 hours minimum.

I never really fully appreciated it before but maybe it's the editing; I love the parallels in this episode. On one side, a father who missed his daughter so much it would cause his heart to hurt in his chest; he would lay awake at night missing his children and wanting to return to them. A father who left home because a senseless war had torn him away from his family. On the other hand, a father who hates his son, spouse and brother for their weakness of spirit; he sent his son away from his home and burnt his face because he couldn't stand the sight of him. A father who slept like a baby while he nurtured the psychotic and perfectionist tendencies of his treasured daughter whom he would grant the title of fire lord only after declaring himself the supreme ruler of the world.

ozai = tywin/night king azula=cersei/ramsey bolton zuko=jaime/hound between the fire royal family and lannister family, they are alot of similarities. i think the creator was inspired by GOT and use some the character to create the avatar characters. and D & D are inspire from AVATAR for one of the GOT episode.

That the scene you’re talking about at 20:00, it would seem that it was foreshadowed when he’s talking to Katara in the ship, when he rips the banner with the fire nation insignia and throws it over his staff.
