One moment that took a while for me to notice was how Zuko waits for Iroh to wake up even though he's anxious to apologize. The very first episode of the show ends with Zuko rudely ordering someone to wake Iroh just to give news that could have waited anyway. Everything comes full circle in this show.

*There was a few references to the lion turtles in the show.* -In The Library Aang finds a drawing of one in an old book. -In Ba Sing Se, Sokka and (possibly) Aang stand near a sculpture of one at the Royal Palace. -In Sokka's Master, Piandao's door knockers are Lion Turtle heads. -Piandao tells sokka he has a heart "as big as a Lion Turtle", -Lion Turtle statues are in Piandao's Rock Garden. Not the best foreshadowing by any means, but also not out of the blue. They were well known to exist in their world. And there's legends of World Turtles (where the creators got their inspiration) in Asian mythology, so who knows.. maybe there is one hiding in deep waters ;p

Keep It Zen Yeah the Lion Turtle got criticized back in the day for being a deus ex machina for exactly what they discuss in the reaction but, although I get why they see it that way, it technically isn’t cuz of everything you listed. Like yeah it was convenient but not completely out of nowhere. 😉 And I love the mystery of it anyway. Spirits did help them in earlier in the series before too.

It's still a Deus Ex Machina. They started an idea of killing or not killing but then back out by using a plot device, or I guess plot turtle, to have the problem solved for the characters with a force not initiated by the characters, instead of having a good solution to the proposed moral question. Tho it is one of the best deus ex machina usages I've seen, they still presented it well in the show and without it being COMPLETELY unfitting out of nowhere with some mild foreshadowing here and there.

The difference between the brothers Ozai and Iroh is a simple one: When Zuko had wronged his father, Ozai burned his face and sent him on what was meant to be an impossible quest; exiling him from his home and the rest of his family. When Zuko had wronged Iroh, his uncle embraced him before he could even finish his apology. The nephew, unsure if gaining his uncle's forgiveness could be so easy, balks in disbelief. Iroh had always seen Zuko as an honourable person. Even in the latter's most difficult moments, Iroh never gave up on him. And it would only take a few seconds for Zuko to acknowledge that truth. Seconds between father and son.

@Mrryn4 жыл бұрын
@@tjjordan4207 Oh by all means he didn't. But to some who saw it as "speaking out of turn" probably did. And more importantly, Ozai felt wronged by it. And that's all that mattered, both to Ozai and to Zuko who dutifully honored his father. Zuko didn't plead to his father that he didn't wrong him but that he didn't mean to, showing that, in his mind, he believes he wronged his father even if accidentally. And he continued to believe that up until he finally found his way in life.

Being the Avatar meant all these burdens and expectations and personal sacrifices that he doesn't know if he's ready for. He just wanted to grow up and live a normal life. He didn't want this but it chose him. This is why when people say this isn't about you, it's about the world, well yeah but it is also about Aang because it's his life he's sacrificing. Whatever he does will stay with him forever. Being the Avatar really sucks at times. You're essentially seen as a tool that needs to give up everything for the world when it's needed.

In any case, I actually appreciate the fact that Aang didn't kill Ozai in the end. It became a lot more poetic(?) this way as a result. Instead of ending a 100 year war of violence and bloodshed with more violence and bloodshed, he ended it with kindness by showing mercy. Have we become so desensitized by the world that we now believe the answer to everything is killing? I understand what you guys are saying and Aang even addressed it himself. "Firelord Ozai is a horrible person. And the world would probably be better off without him." I agree with Avatar Yangchen in the sense that the Avatar needs to do what's best for the world, despite his own personal beliefs. But that doesn't necessarily mean killing is the only way to fulfil his duty of protecting the world. I think that's the lesson that the show is trying to teach: There isn't just one path to peace. Think back to what Iroh was telling Zuko about the right way to end the war and the way history would see it. Now apply it to Aang's situation. It's true, this isn't just about Aang but also his LEGACY, HOW he ended the war, and how future generations would see it. And please don't forget that Aang is still a child. Even without him being a monk with certain morals instilled in him from birth, I would fully expect him to feel conflicted about killing Ozai. How would you have felt if Aang was completely on board with killing from the get-go? It wouldn't sit right with me, personally. #AangAintNoBitch

I get what you're saying but within this series, the Gaang never made everything about killing nor did most of the characters. This is really the only time the heroes even consider it cuz its Ozai, the worst person in the world. So the whole desensitized concept doesn't apply here. I feel your exaggerating it and generalizing the Normies perspective to excuse Aang. The whole point of Aang struggling with that is to give him deveopment, although I appreciate the ideas you discussed, your painting Aangs idealism too close to perfect. Aangs struggle and flaws made him relatable.

aeris44 Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Concerning the Normies perspective, I know they all don't share the view of "killing is always the answer." Suraj even clarifies later that the answer can be whatever Aang thinks is justice. My main point was about Aang having a "bitch" mentality just because he wants to preserve life, which I don't think is completely fair. I agree, Aang struggling with this makes him relatable. And I don't think Aang thought about it on the greater level I described regarding Iroh. He's not as ideal or perfect as Iroh at this point. I think he just wanted to protect his current ideals.

Note: Possible Spoilers ahead. Think of Aang's situation, really ponder it. He is an 12 year old kid, raised by a civilization that taught him all life is valuable. Seriously, he is a child being asked to kill. He is burdened with the knowledge (and power) that only he can put a stop to the evil happening, and bring BALANCE to the world. He understands killing a killer does not bring balance. It goes against everything he is taught, and to ask him to do a 180 on his beliefs in a couple of days is mind numbingly difficult. It's very easy to pass judgement and call him a bitch. It's also very easy to tell someone to kill another human being than to be in the shoes of the person who is actually doing it. Killing is hard, it is brutal, you are extinguishing a life, and for someone like Aang it will haunt him for the remainder of his life. I guarantee you that he would have been an absolute mess and unable to perform his Avatar duty had he killed the Fire Lord. He is searching for another way, why call him a bitch for that. Arguably, he is going the tougher and harder fought route by finding an alternative way. How would he have been viewed after killing the Fire Lord? Probably with gratitude and affection at first, but one it sunk in people would have been petrified. Someone so powerful, ended a 100 year old war and brutally killed his enemy. People would fear the once symbol of hope and balance. Realistically, if he had not found an alternative route, then I understand if he had to kill, it would have been the right and only way to save millions of lives. I just don't think Aang should be faulted for trying to find an alternative way. Sometimes, in our word, killing is the only way, but we should not stop looking for a peaceful way if killing is only one of the ways.

Aang is an air nomad so if he killed Ozai he would’ve lost his bending cuz when air nomad don’t follow the rules of their culture they loose their bending, just like Avatar Kyoshi’s mom. She stop listening to the air nomad ways and she lost her bending
@blueoranges6961 Жыл бұрын
I saw someone in another video talk about how not killing Ozai is a really important part of the show because of part in the finale where he says “you’re weak just like the rest of your people.” The monks strength was in their ability stay away from violence, Aang was the last of his people and he needed to prove that what his people stood for and what they died for mattered. That valuing life isn't a weakness and that disregarding it isn’t strength. I can’t remember who said it or which video but the comment really stuck with me

So... Pacifism makes people a little bitch. *Sighs* Here we go again. Because by that logic, Jesus, Gandhi, and the Buddha would all be little bitches. The entire point of this ending is to contrast Aang against all the other previous Avatars. Aang is able to energy-bend BECAUSE his conviction to his principles, his relentless determination to uphold his Pacifist ideals, and his utter commitment to find a better way allowed him to find that better way, to develop a power which no other Avatar was ever able to. Being a Pacifist means being willing to stand your ground and say "to hell with the world, I will not give up what I think is right for anything," and, in it's own way, that's pretty fucking admirable.

I truly love Yangchen's moment with Aang, because she essentially lays out reality for him. That at times, you will have to put your feelings and morals aside for the world. It was such a somber moment, especially for a kid's show. Now the rest is up to Aang, but one thing is for sure, he will have to face his destiny as Iroh said.

The Lion Turtle is a reference to Amitabha and the Pure Land Tradition of the Mahayana Buddhism. The clue is the chinese buddhist mantra in the background. The mantra contains the Nianfo (念仏), the repetition of the name of Amitabha in chinese. The Nianfo says 南無阿彌陀佛 (Nāmó Ēmítuófó). According to the Pure Land Tradition, in order to save all the sentient beings, Amitabha created an uncorrupted world, the Pure Land, in which the devotee who has invoked Amitabha could be reborn. This Pure Land has unique conditions that allow the reborn devotee to attain enlightenment, far away from the sufferings and conditions of our corrupted world. The Pure Land allows to have a direct path into enlightenment. I think the meditation Aang was having the previous night was so intense that the Lion Turtle answered his subconscient call for aid. The back of the Lion Turtle was some sort of a Pure Land, an uncorrupted place in the middle of the sea, isolated from the rest of the world, in which Aang could have his Bhagavad-Gita scene with the previous Avatars.

I might be forgetting a couple others. 24:48 I think this is spot on. The secularist modern world forgets the importance of faith, but the show is teaching us that we must do what must and trust that things will fall in place. 'The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost; the true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginningless time, darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light' -- the Lion Turtle, to Aang. If you don't fight, the void will allow darkness to thrive, but if you are light you will defeat it. 25:57 Zuko took Katara with him because he has seen her power, both in 'The Southern Raiders' and in 'The Crossroads of Destiny'; and Katara wants vengeance for Azula shooting Aang dead in Ba Sing Se. 28:12 Toph and Bumi duel in the comics.

This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire series, and the reason is the conversations that Aang has with the four past Avatars. It would have been easy to have him wind up in a singler conversation that gave him all the wisdom he needed, but that isn't what happened. Each Avatar has a unique set of principles, experiences, opinions, and ultimately choices that shaped the way they fulfilled their role. Roku is full of regret over his own choice to spare Sozin, the negative consequences of which are still unfolding even as Aang sits on that island. Kyoshi sees the world in black and white, order and chaos, which just isn't how Aang sees things and is why he dismisses her advice. Kuruk embodies Aang's greatest fear- that his inability to make this vital decision will eventually lead to Katara and his friends' deaths. Yangchen is the Avatar most relatable to Aang, so her words hold the most weight. Her advisement that the needs of the many are more important than his own needs play into Aang's greatest shame- the way he ran away instead of facing his destiny as the Avatar.

They where forshadowed in this series (lats airbender) too. But I have a really big problem with Korra....... One thing is that they explained the lionturtle, how the avatar came and all of that, because if you explain the magic then it also kills the magic.
@Pablo360able6 жыл бұрын
A Storm Comes That only really applies to soft magic. Avatar is a relatively hard magic system, which means that it works better if the audience can understand it. That's basically the one problem most people (myself included!) have with the ATLA finale - it takes the soft aspect of Avatar's magic system (all that spirit jazz) and uses it like hard magic (i.e. the same way it uses bending). It wasn't properly foreshadowed, and if the finale didn't stretch over four episodes it wouldn't work at all. Whatever problems Korra has, expanding on and solidifying the lore of lion turtles is a smart move.
@katrinalace66736 жыл бұрын
Pablo360able by that I mean that Korra kinda butchert well the soft Magic or the theories and lores that where thought of and kinda just made up some sort thing with stupid spirits, and way do you bring up the bending? The bending was flawless in Avatar, and loved it, however, the bending in Korra didn't felt smooth and where mostly just punches and kicks and some water wips in different elements. Yeah I really hated the fact that the spirits where basically god vs satan, protecnicly (I don't know what that word is ) "good" vs "evil". Also The Avatar (I'm talking about the Avatar(Korra, Aang) lost it's magic and coolness. Ok that is all I can write right now..... Because I have to leave Also I hope that you aren't offended by it, it's all just my opinion and how I fell about Korra
@Pablo360able6 жыл бұрын
A Storm Comes I'm not offended and I understand what you're saying, but at the same time I inherently disagree. First of all, the bending in Korra is inherently different from The Last Airbender. It's not really a martial art anymore, at least not exclusively; it's become secularized, which is a natural move for the series to make considering the modern tone established by its setting, and also makes sense given the way the disintegration of boundaries that Republic City represents would affect the culture's views on bending. And while there are certainly issues to be had with Season 2, the concept of cosmic forces of good and evil battling for supremacy is itself very old and mystical - the battle of creation and destruction, of the is and the is-not. It's a very Western concept, but Korra, in contrast with The Last Airbender, is a very Western show, and the blending of that with the Eastern concept of reincarnation gives the lore overall a unique, blended structure that is, if nothing else, honest. But the point I specifically disagree with is that revealing the origin of the Avatar's power makes them lose their coolness. And that's for the same reason I brought up bending. Bending is hard magic, and it's the core draw of TLA. Spirit stuff has always been soft, and the concept of the Avatar was rooted in spirit stuff. This mix of magic varieties gave the show an interesting feel, but it also caused the finale to feel inconsistent with the rest of the show. Making spirit stuff and the nature of the Avatar harder by explaining the lore in more detail, in my humble opinion, allows the spirit world and bending in Korra to feel more interrelated, while in TLA the spirit world stuff sometimes felt like it belonged in a different series altogether. Whether the two were unified competently is up for debate, but I personally welcome the new additions to the lore and don't feel like any of the magic was lost. It was merely hardened. I don't need to be kept in the dark about the Avatar's nature to appreciate their power and importance.
@katrinalace66736 жыл бұрын
Pablo360able ok I'm back now, and read your comment, and I agree with some of your argument. I understand that they made the bending less martial art because in "moderntime" people didn't care for it that much, but it would have been nice to see some benders still use some bending arts form the old show. Yes the soft to extreme spiritual magic did maybe went to fast, but I can forgive them for it, because they didn't really have the time to do it, 'cause this was the last season, so they basically had space it out and do a different passing, but it worked really really well in the time and length they had. In other seasons it kinda shows that they had more planned, but as always you can't have everything going into plan. But could we maybe please agree that litterly killing the avatar spirit because of stupid Korra(the character), was just not necessary, and if I can recall correctly that her soul in the battle, was littlerly hit and slapped around like with a wet papertowel. Okay okay I finished ranting. But with all that said. Look. I can respect people that like Korra or even love it, I can live with that. But there some people(like me) that don't like/hate the legend of korra. And some overprotective fanboys/girls get butthurt about it. So I hope that you can understand my feelings towards it, and respect my opinion about hating the show, and I know hate is a strong word but thats just how I feel.so you seem to like and I respect you for it, then different opinions are great and show what people feel about some things. And I really hope that you could respect me for saying my opinion about korra. So I hope that we can close this argument and move on, and I have other things to say about it, but I hate being in arguments. So it was a good talk with you and have a nice day.

The Lion Turtles were teased all throughout the series up until this point. You have to look to find them, but they're there. General Fong and General Sung wore them on their pauldrons, a painting of one was on a scroll in the library of Wan Shi Tong, a statue of one was outside the Earth Kingdom Royal Palace, Piandao compared Sokka's courage and heart to those of the lion turtle, Pianodao also had many lion turtle furnishings, and Admiral Chan's home on Ember island had a lion turtle door knocker.

I’m not sure if you guys know this but just didn’t mention it but in oriental Asian culture, the lion is a very iconic structure. If you go to China, the streets will be covered with statues of “lions” everywhere. In front of restaurants, in squares, peoples homes, etc. Look up Asian lion statue and you’ll see that they have the same sort of facial and mane design as that of the adapted mythological creature in the show. It’s a symbol of respect, spirituality, and wisdom. The lion turtle in avatar is derived from real world culture.

One thing that I feel like no one notices is that Yangchen's advice said he must *sacrifice his own spiritual needs* to help save the world because as the Avatar, his sole duty is *to* the world. Aang however chooses not sacrifice his own spirituality and this is the reason that the lion turtle gives him the ability to take away a person's bending (in the next episode). The lion turtle states that "to bend anothers energy, your own *spirit* must be *unbendable* ". So it is *BECAUSE* of Aang rejecting to compromise his spiritual needs (bend his spirit) that he was able to hold the ability of taking away someones bending. So energy-bending isn't just a random thing that the writers decided to give aang. Sozins Comet Part 2 is the that episode shows WHY Aang, and only Aang, was specifically the Avatar to be granted this power. The other Avatar's decided to put the world first even if it meant sacrificing their spiritual needs (which isn't necessarily wrong, just a different preference of defeating their enemy) but Aang didn't want to sacrifice his spirit. Thus, making his spirit pure enough to possess energy bending, as the Lion Turtle says in Sozin's Comet Part 4.

While I don't disagree with you and I find it really interesting, the ability is still kind of an asspull since it was mentioned this late into the series, in the climax no less. If it was forshadowed a little earlier, it would have been better

The Earth Turtle (The one Aang met) made the Badgermoles and gave them his power of earth. The Fire Turtle (Where the 1st Avatar was born) made the dragons and gave them his power of fire. The Air Turtle saw a 6th leg'th Bison with big horns but perfect self control, impressed he gave him the power of air. This is how the "Original" benders came to be. Zuko, Katara, Sokka meet their old masters.. And Aang meet his extremely old master, when he was Avatar Wan I love how the title of every episodes relate so much to the show..

I cried soooo much in Avatar the Last Airbender. Like so much. but in Legend of Korra, I didn't shed a small tear. Because the Characters aren't memorable or likeable to me attal.
