I think he means that you are capable of being so independent that you don't have family... Just found family. Like we never see a family system for the air nomads at all. I think I also heard that there were two temples for women, and two for men so they were segregated and I guess learnt to live like that maybe

@@VS-2002 well Monk Gyatso was like a father figure to Aang so that actually is a “family system” within the air nomads, so yes none of them are actually related but the older Monks do consider the younger ones as their “children” in a way, that’s why I was confused by his comment bc it is technically still “family”

Because the fire nation wiped them all out. The air nomads are all dead expect for Aang -- Hence the name "The Last Airbender". Also he literally turned to Zuko's actor and said "He took that all away from me."
