I'm actually impressed that they opted to get actors who know martial arts so they can do most of their stunts themselves instead of just taking the easy way out and finding stunt doubles. It makes sense for a show like this where the action is also kind of a representation of who the characters are as people, but they didn't have to make the casting process harder than it alrd was. I mean one theme I am picking up on is just the cost of war. I feel like the messages about losing your childhood: how yes-the main characters are kids who have to do things that shouldn't be expected of children, only in war it is a reality. You can't afford to be a kid when you have to run for your life and look at fighting war. Looking at how war changes you-sometimes in good ways, often in bad. "Leaves from the Vine" was perfect for this episode. At the end when Iroh boarded the boat to be happily supportive of Zuko going into exile... I loved how bright his smile and optimism was. The loneliest people are the kindest. The saddest people smile the brightest. The most damaged people are the wisest. All because they don't wish to see anyone else suffer the way they did. The quote applies a bit different especially with the last line. Zuko and Iroh both have actually seen each other suffer and go through miserable pain. Both of them went through different processes of having to deal with it... but they both ended up together for the series. A friend helping a friend.

A majority of our society just likes to consume trash regularly, so of course youll see trash and believe that its fine. In reality, there were so many problems with this show, that it just felt awkward to consume for those of us with standards. So much of what made the original great, was stripped away and now the show just feels bare. Why do you think the original creators ended up leaving this project? It's because they did not want their name tied to this abomination. I'd leave too.

I don't usually comment much on reaction videos but I feel like I really gotta say this: I appreciate your reaction to this A LOT because I like the way you're approaching this. Your takes on things are very nuanced and you point out the good things with the bad. Overall you feel like one of the few people on the internet that I have seen that approach this show with a truly open mind - it could be good, it could be bad, it could be somewhere in between, let's see where this takes us. Most people don't do this. They either go in extremely overhyped and try to justify parts of this show that just weren't good, others go in already thinking it's going to be terrible so they aren't even open to the good things this show does (& I'll be honest the latter annoy me more because I am not a fan of needless negativity). So I think overall your approach is the most balanced one and I enjoy your open-mindedness about it. It's become very rare these days, most people alrd hate or love something before even knowing the whole picture. Judgement is placed way too quickly. Not just when it's about media, but everything in general. It's hard for me to wach this development. You'd think ATLA fans especially would know better than to judge too quickly, considering Zuko is one of the best written characters in television, if not media overall - but if you had stopped watching the cartoon after season 1 of the original you would have no idea about that. Seeing a thing through before judging is very important. Anyways, long rant, but the essence is: I like your takes, because they're neither shit-talking nor sugarcoating. It's a breath of fresh air in the midst of all the extremes these days.

Bumi is interesting here. They took the story beat. "Bumi teaches Aang a lesson he will need to face the fire lord" and changed the specifics of the lesson. In the animation, the lesson is that he needs to "think differently" to how he was trained. The lesson here is (fitting more with the darker tone of the show) "You need to make hard choices, this is a war." It really is setting the tone for the inevitable "You need to kill Ozai" choice Aang will have to deal with. I like it a bit better in that context.

I think the biggest change is that the original started out aimed at 12 year olds and shifted over the first season to the main target audience being late teens - this is really targeting an older audience with the bottom end being maybe 16 year olds but really the main target is more adult. As a result this aims at a more real feel where things have lasting impact so Bumi in the animation really acts like a child who has not really grown up nor has he been affected by the last 100 years and that worked fine in a cartoon, but this shows him as an adult who has lived through 100 years of war.

I'm glad to see a reaction that also enjoyed this episode like I did. I've been hearing about what some of the changes in the episode are from the animated series and I have to be honest that it actually doesn't bother me. The story with Zuko and his uncle made me feel a bit better towards Zuko because there's hope for him to become better like his uncle. I agree that Jet should've just let Katara go and shouldn't have grabbed her arm. She was obviously not going to see things the way he did. However, I don't agree that he didn't help Katara get better at using her bending. Yes, she would've eventually realized where she was messing up, but he showed her how to get there faster. She just put in the work to get better after that. That's true even if the roles are reversed. The Aang vs Bumi fight was pretty cool and I hope that Bumi will pop up again later in the show. I actually like Katara the way she is in the show right now. If she was too much more I don't think I would as much. I don't want her to shift too much into the area of Zuko's sister who I really don't like. Zuko's father, sister and that Fire Nation Commander are my least favorite characters on the show. I don't want Katara to end up there. Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌ out.

I LOVED EVERY CHARACTER except Katara. But to be fair, i didn't like her much in the cartoon version until Toph showed up anyway LOL so if they give us a few more seasons I think Katara can shine.

I think Katara's character is well thought out to balance Sokka out. They work as ying yang for me. If you took out one of them, the standalone would wear me out quickly but both together work out like bitter coffee and sugar.

I get the "realities of war" bit but I couldn't get behind Bumi being a totally different person and telling Aang his friends are useless and that he can't rely on friendship from anyone. That's the complete opposite of what he said. He didn't impart any kind of wisdom to him at all.

17:52 Yeah, in the original series, it was Aang and Katara. Sokka was with the other group

Lu Ten's funeral scene had no business in making me BAWL. I was a barely controllable mess. Zuko and Iroh there reminds me so much of their reunion scene in Book 3, which also made me BAWL.

Sokka was with the nomads and aang katara and appa were in a separate cavern after the walls collapsed bc appa was afraid of fire. Katara told the story of the “two lovers” when they were at their tomb. But the kiss aang and katara shared as the candle burned out lit their path.

Just a note if anyone realizes it. In the feature by M. Night Shyamalan, he mainly used Indian casts as the Fire Nation and made a meme out of the Earth Benders. I think Netflix paid tribute to him consciously or unconsciously by casting Pan Indians as Earth Benders with kick-ass bending.

So I understand what they did with Bumi, but I still hate that he isn’t nearly as fun loving and goofy and wise as the animated character that I love.
