In the main city of the Fire Nation, a person who can move earth with their mind tries to run away with some secret papers. But a bunch of people who can control fire chase after him and catch him eventually. However, before they catch him, he manages to give the important information to his friend, who escapes. The captured person is taken to see the Fire Lord, who tells him that the papers he stole were fake. They were meant to trick other countries into thinking that the Fire Nation's first attack in their upcoming war would be against the Earth Kingdom. But the Fire Lord actually has a different plan in mind.

At the Southern Air Temple, there's a big festival coming up to celebrate a comet. Aang, a talented airbender who's only twelve, is told by his friend Monk Gyatso that he's the next Avatar, which means he can bend all four elements and protect the world. Aang helps get ready for the festival with his friends while Gyatso talks with other elders about what to do. The Earth Kingdom asks for help against the Fire Nation, and the elders decide Aang needs to learn the other elements quickly to help. Gyatso worries because Aang is still very young and might not be ready for such a big responsibility. But the other elders insist, so Gyatso takes Aang to a special place to learn more about being the Avatar.
In the Southern Water Tribe Village of Wolf Cove, a teenage girl named Katara tries to practice her waterbending secretly but struggles to do even simple moves. She discovers her older brother Sokka trying to organize the village children for patrol duty. Together, they go fishing to get food for the village. Sokka scolds Katara for using her powers, warning her that the Fire Nation has hunted down all other waterbenders in the South Pole, and it's dangerous for her to reveal her abilities. They argue, and end up caught in strong river currents that push them into a large, round iceberg.
Their boat floated away, so Katara tried to use her waterbending to bring it back. But she wasn't able to control her bending very well, and it made the ice around them shake. Suddenly, a bright light came from the center of the iceberg, and it broke apart. Inside, they found a young boy named Aang. His glowing marks disappeared, and he fell unconscious at their feet. Sokka, Katara's brother, was unsure and worried about the strange boy, but Katara insisted they bring him back to their village. At the same time, a nearby Fire Nation ship's crew saw the light too, and their young scarred captain ordered them to follow it.
Confused why the firebenders are back, Gran Gran explains they're after Aang because he's the Avatar. Zuko and his soldiers come to the village gate, demanding they hand over Aang to keep Wolf Cove safe. Sokka is ready to give in, but Katara persuades him they can't surrender the world's only chance to defeat the Fire Nation.
Sokka challenges Zuko to a one-on-one fight, saying if he wins, Zuko and his men have to leave the village. Zuko agrees. They fight briefly, but Sokka gets hurt and can't fight anymore. Before Zuko can hurt him more, Aang steps in to protect Sokka. The villagers try to fight the firebenders, but Zuko gets angry and decides to destroy the village. Aang offers to give himself up if they promise not to hurt anyone else. Zuko agrees, so they take Aang away. Katara tells Sokka they need to help Aang, so Sokka puts someone else in charge and gives orders for defending the village. Then he gets ready to follow the ship and rescue Aang.

Sokka and Katara take the unconscious boy back to their village, and their grandmother recognizes the tattoos on his body as those of an airbender. Sokka doesn't believe it because airbenders are supposed to be extinct, but they decide to let the boy rest. Meanwhile, on the Fire Nation ship, the young captain, Prince Zuko, tries to convince his uncle, General Iroh, of what he saw.
