The Fantasia (1940) finale soundtrack of Ave Maria has always been a favorite of mine. The little add-on at the beginning of this video is based on Leopold Stokowski's lovely pace-changing transition from Mussorgsky's frantic "Night on Bald Mountain" into the calmer Ave Maria. I had greater ambitions to include a longer segment but I scaled back after spending way too much time trying to re-acquaint myself with the newer Cakewalk software. The last time I did anything like this was probably in 2010 or so, and that was using Sonar 8. Things have changed...
The backing track is my sort of heavy-handed attempt to make something more pleasant for accompanying the theremin than the usual calliope-paced piano arpeggios. I'm not a musician, so with my untrained ear I sometimes have trouble with chord identification of the original background music. But it's fun for me, and the theremin always sounds better when you have some other music to hide behind. As usual with the theremin I feel that it is necessary to pre-apologize for not always hitting the notes or taking too long to reach pitch and getting behind. Theremining is hard!
