I think it's because the power cars are of a design which is also designed for Eurkpean models so it has to be a bit narrower to fit within the European loading gauges. y’all need to stop hating on the horn, Amtrak’s not changing it. It fits great with the train and nobody wants a freight train horn on a modern electric train.
@EMDSD14R4 жыл бұрын
Amtrak probably won't change the horns. I mean you could say the samething about the Acela I and ACS64's they use the K5LA which is also found on freight diesels. Here is an example in regards to the horn sound and loudness. When Amtrak ordered the RTG Tubrotrains from France they had French horns. Most sets got those quickly replaced with P5 horns. The reason is because people couldn't hear them that well when blown. Amtrak also added Mar's lights because the original RTG headlight arrangement confused drivers at grade crossings. The RTG's headlight setup's were similar to a cars. The same concept could be applied to the Avelia as far as the horns go, meaning not being loud enough. But they've had to have passed FRA standards since they are on the sets. Let's see what happens because lots of things need testing and, those evaluations will determine if changes will occur on the next sets.

Thanos a super loud horn feeling weird?? What about railroad crossings, this tiny horn nobody will hear while driving, and how drivers in the USA they will just continue in the tracks. And since it’s not in service till next year that means there is still a chance of it changing the horn to a K5LA or a P3

As a European I get super confused and weirded out when American rail enthusiasts complain about something like the horn of all things. I mean if anything these people are the primary spokespeople for the future of rail in this country and if their biggest complain is about a horn not sounding loud enough to get them "excited" then that's quite frankly really worrying. If anything a quieter horn means it would be better for those living up close to the rail lines to not have their ears blown off every time a train passes by! Even just stuff like that would by the looks of it give trains a much better reputation already due to the lowered noise levels.
@EMDSD14R4 жыл бұрын
Hmm I can understand what you mean based on your persepective but let me shed some light onto why it might be an issue. If the horn isn't loud enough people might not be aware the train is approaching. If you listen to the previous Acela even at high speeds you can clearly hear its horn. Only one horn is begin blown and the Avelia was designed with two. Also quiet zones don't help around trains. I've live by trains my whole life and its a joy to hear them thundering over junctions and blowing their horns at night. And the tracks are next to my house a couple hundred yards or so away. People that complain that the train passing is to loud well you could say the same thing about the noise of a super highway. I think you should look more into why our rail standards are the way they are and maybe that way you'll understand why people are saying they don't like the horn. Yes some people don't like because they expected it to be something that they would be use to. Me yes I was expecting a much louder horn but I am also concerned that because its a new train a lot of people might not be aware of it because its horn is not loud enough. Now it had to have passed FRA tests because they are using it. Its like anything out there you get use to it. I mean I am not overly complaining about it because since its different I can tell when its coming. But you really have to listen otherwise you won't hear its horn.
@drdewott91544 жыл бұрын
@@EMDSD14R I mean I live in a small town in a forest and about 2 miles away there's a railroad served by little Alstom lint DMU's that use the same or a nearly identical horn to the Avelia liberty multiple times an hour and I can still hear those horns pretty loud and clear from that far away so they're definitely doing their job. And if someone can't hear a horn like that, or the bells of a level crossing then that simply says more about American drivers than their trains! Also I'll just say this but if you guys have level crossings at a railroad where trains pass faster than 75mph then you've kinda trapped yourself in a corner there with a huge safety risk to begin with. Besides houses shouldn't be built up against a highway to begin with without proper noise reduction precautions like noise reduction shields, tight vegetation and in some cases a berm, and no these aren't just opinions, these are literally the standards on the other side of the Atlantic. And you may be used to the sounds of trains passing constantly, but you're a rail enthusiast. Not everyone is gonna want all of that noise whether they have a choice in the matter or otherwise. And while I may be a rail enthusiast as well, I can see that some people wouldn't want to live with sleepless nights, and no ability to relax during the little free time they have and end up stressed out every day at work.
@EMDSD14R4 жыл бұрын
@@drdewott9154 ok I see..and I assume it's quiet at night? So if that's the case even a horn like can be heard well. Take out sometime to study American railroads and the history behind them you'll answer all your questions as to how small towns sprang up from railroads and the grade crossings. A lot of areas for years have switched to under and overpasses because the speeds are higher. Prime example the NEC. So we havent been back into a corner. But lack of funding and politics hinder a lot of rail improvement projects to so that's an issue. I've seen plenty of videos from around the world were stupid drivers drive around gates or people walk in front of trains because they are either trespassing or not paying attention. Why do you think we have the strickest rail standards out of every other country? Its because someone wasn't paying attention, they were being stupid or a freak accident happen. But even with all those rules in place you can't prevent everything. I am more then just a rail enthusiast . I look at it from both perspectives. First off if your not use to the noise of trains why would you then why complain about them? The trains were there before you moved there. Maybe you didn't have another option to move elsewhere. I totally get and understand that and that's normal. But still and if the town has multiple gradecrossing and is busy line thrn why not have the railroad build a sound wall? There are other options besides "quiet zones". Now from s financial view quiet zones mean no need to build a wall. Some areas that works perfectly fine others not so much. I mean if I lived near a major engine terminal I might get annoyed because of the diesels idling. But I'd get use to it. I also understand that if your losing sleep over it then yeah I wouldn't be a happy person either. The problem is people don't have patients today, they don't do their research and they don't care. They want what they want then and now. Now if they did all that and more and nothing was done then patients and understanding might not be there. I am just using those as examples as to some of the things I see and hear. Those examples don't take into account any other factors. I mean you could say the same thing about living near an airport. I lived near Philadelphia international airport when I was a kid and trust me planes are way louder then trains. What I'd like you to understand as to why people are complaining about the horn and the dangers that could happen because its not loud enough. But we won't know until they enter service so let's wait and see.

@@EMDSD14R That was basically what I posted - it was WHY I said that the Pendolino was only produced in a SINGLE country without mods; every country required local modification (the US was not alone there) - I was getting sick and tired of the US getting swiped at for requiring local mods, which is why I was pointing out that while the Pendolino was the base, every country but one required local mods of the Pendolino base design - per Alstom itself. The N700TC is a Shinkansen built for the Texas Central Railway; again, the Buy American Act gets in the way; I hear very little griping about that. I don't think Amtrak wanted highspeed emu's. Those would have to be built to withstand a crash for U.S. standards. I think they could be built but might have been more expensive and heavier. The Avelia is lighter then the current Acela trains. They also have a modular design meaning parts can be quickly changed or the consist expanded depending on ridership demand. The same thing could be done with the EMU also but Amtrak chose this route.

I wish they would have made a tilting mechanism for the power cars too. Not having a tilt mechanism in the front basically means the train will not go any faster than other trains around curves. It also means that the lack of the bulge on the power cars make them not line up properly with the cars. It looks really odd that way. The paint on the train, and the horn are growing on me, anyways nice video!
@EMDSD14R4 жыл бұрын
The X2000 power car didn't tilt and the current Acela power cars don't tilt. But they have the trucks that allows them to take curves faster. The reasons the cars tilt is to counteract the forces exerted on the passengers and keep them up right and comfortable. Since the power cars are locomotives there's no need for them to tilt. Now if this set was a full emu then the whole train must tilt because all sections of the train carry passengers.
