Welcome to a thrilling deep-dive into the heart of BMW engines! In this video, we uncover the best-kept secret of BMW engines, challenging conventional wisdom and redefining car performance. Join me as we journey from the naturally aspirated N52, through the turbocharged N20 and B48, right up to the exceptional B58.
If you're interested in the turbo and downpipe that I mention in this video you can find it here (affiliate):
The turbo is from IPOS and it's called the IM450, link here bit.ly/43Gn6jV and the downpipe is here bit.ly/3JgU3va
We unravel the transformation BMW underwent in engine development, and how they learned from past failures to produce engines that are not only powerful but also efficient and surprisingly tunable. We'll answer intriguing questions - what if BMW knew from the beginning that the engine architecture was going to be turbocharged? How did this foresight transform the design of the B58 and B48 engines?
Watch me as I upgrade the turbo on my B48, aiming for a whopping 360 wheel horsepower with just 91octane, and making this G20 330i nearly as fast as a G80 M3, all while keeping the engine untouched. This engine has more to offer, and I’ll push the limits, even reaching over 400 wheel horsepower with E50. Could it get any better? Well, stay tuned for a potential run at 450 wheel horsepower with port injection in the future.
Who knew you could own a B48 powered BMW that's lighter, faster, and more fuel-efficient than its expensive counterparts? It's about time we let this well-kept secret out!
If you enjoy getting up to speed with the ins and outs of engine performance, don't forget to like this video, share it with your fellow car enthusiasts, and subscribe to my channel for more exciting content. Enjoy the ride!

The only failure I’ve seen to the balance shaft was from a customer over revving to 9k. The idler sprocket wobbled off the bearing and broke through the side of the block. The rod bearings were in good shape.

How is it possible to rev to 9000rpm??? The rev limiter should prevent that. Only way to do that would be downshifting a manual in the extreme, but there are not many manuals left, if any with the later engines.

A LOT of routine maintenance, I'm gearing up to do a valve cleaning here when I find the time, oil blow by gets into the intake tract and creates carbon build up inside the intake valves choking off air flow to the engine. I took the manifold off and LOTS of carbon crud on the walls and valves themselves, an upgraded PCV valve and oil catch can should alleviate the build up but it still needs to be cleaned.
@teekay_1
@teekay_1 Жыл бұрын
I thought the secret was that they all end up leaking oil.
@BozoBlaster12
@BozoBlaster12 Жыл бұрын
They do, the oil filter housing gasket will eventually fail, leaking oil down the front and drivers side of the engine, oil will get on the serpentine belt and over time saturating the oil and stretching the belt which can then result in it slipping making awful belt squeaking and then it can slip out and get wedged in between your harmonic balancer and push its way back the front main seal I to the oil pan, and if your lucky the power steering pulley might hit the subframe from hitting a pothole and breaking the guides for the pulley and can shred the softened belt up like it did to me! Which can also push pieces instead of the whole belt into the front main seal. It's a plastic pulley like everything else so I replaced with an aluminum pulley. If you don't replace the gasket this can all happen and lead to catastrophic engine failure.

You don't need an M2, m3 or m4, this is something I've been saying for a while now. I've been tracking my 230i and absolutely dominating with my b48 engine. I was skeptical about the power at first but it is more than adequate. Glad I got a b48 because the handling characteristics from the lighter front end is better than a MX5, and GR86. It is that good!

Thanks for subbing! There are two places where even stock it impresses me, sometimes if you hit the torque just right at around 20 mph it'll put you back and from 80 to 100 mph it really moves. Might be going into an over boost. The lighter front end really sets it apart, the G80 M3 had an amazing front end but you could still feel the weight. The M340i felt clumsy at times, if you get it wrong that back end would want to swing around quick.

As a last gen F30 328i owner right before they introduced the B48 and 330i name (again). I always wondered why there was no major performance parts for the 328i. Other than those early N20s having that timing chain failure looming overhead the final year of the 328i was the N26, still open deck etc but no timing chain issues, and some other throw ins for reliability/efficiency. For the 4 cylinder community this is one of the few vehicles that has a longitudinally mounted engine that sits behind the front axle. It’s such a fun car to drive and handles great. Compared to some of the understeery fwd “fun” vehicles. Plus I agree with your take on the pricing of the 330i and M340i. It’s tough to find a low mileage example of the M340 for under 45k. Meanwhile I bought my 2016 in 2019 with 16k miles (spotless carfax) for 25k. BMWs are BMWs and they’ll still do BMW shit but my car has been reliable since I’ve owned it. Tires, oil change, and brake fluid change and bleed is the only maintenance I’ve had done but I am just hitting 56k miles.

I can’t thank you enough for such an informative video. I wouldn’t be modifying this, just curious about the reliability as a daily driver for years to come. I’m concerned about the timing components being at the rear, but I do feel better now knowing that the balance shaft is gear-driven. I believe these have 3 water pumps, which also seems a little concerning for long-term reliability, but on the other hand, it’s good to see cooling is a priority.

@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY Жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if they count on the rigidity coming from the fact that the bottom of the block in externally thick due to needing to house the balance shafts. Also the main cap design looks the same on the B58, correct me if I'm wrong.

The B38, B48 and B58 are all great engines. The B38 never got the high output version I wish they’d offered for the MINI line. A MCS with a 250HP version of the 1.5T I3 would’ve been such an exciting little engine. Shoot it would’ve made a decent entry level engine for the X1/X2, or even a 3-series, especially with a manual transmission.

I've heard the same for the S58, all these modern engines chasing emissions seem to have optimized heads which eventually become a bottle neck. I think at 450 WHP max we should be good on the B48.
@fredfred9758
@fredfred9758 Жыл бұрын
@@VehicularDIY A lot have reached the limitations of porting the head already. Valve spring and cam tuning is the only options after that along with playing around with the engine rod stroke ratio. This engine has potential but nothing compared to the others . May see max 900whp on a totally custom build including sleeves which are available currently. To be honest a B58 will always take it after the 60 foot. The theory you're working with does not take into consideration the power a B58 makes in the upper rpm compared to the tuned 4 cylinders. Yes the 4 cylinder is lighter makes similar power but in the real world after the 60foot marker that 6 cylinder is now truly coming online

Yes of course the N54 was a twin turbo open deck designed from the NA's engines followed by N55 twin scroll turbo. The reason of the stenghness of theese new B engines is that they are MODULAR engines, that followed the N series and those followed the M family series B engines are modular and this means that both Diesel and Gasoline engines have exactly the same block, in this case the fuel engines take the advantages from diesel ones that need usually closed decks due to the higher tork delivery vey high R.C. and vibrations so is a economy of scale for any BMW engine block will be diesel or fuel depending on the sale order. This is why BMW engines are now stronger than ever specially gasoline fueled ones. From 10.5 R.C. premium gas is a must to avoid preignition and engine health although the have all ignition, timing and valve managements. BimmerN53

Yeah this could be another angle for a follow up video, how did the M57 engine influence the B58s design as they could look at their diesel engines for inspiration when they were going all in on gas powered direct injection turbo engines.

Hey there Musa! I wanted to reach out once again to you my good sir to see if you'd be willing to connect. Not sure if you'd had the chance to read the email I sent to you a couple of weeks ago... It would be a privilege to hear back from you there sir! I can only imagine both how busy you are and with that the value of your time-I give you my word that under no circumstances do I intend on misusing it. 🙂 Just to reiterate, I'm not looking to sell anything to you, nor spam you at all! As always, the best BMW stuff on the webverse! 😁 Thank you for all you do! I hope to hear from you soon!

@@VehicularDIY Wonderful to hear back from you! Yes sir, I know it was a bit of a novel! 😅 I was worried that I'd put you off because of that, but I wanted to give as much detail as I could, though it's still only scratching the surface... And of course I wanted to make sure I proved I wasn't a spammer! 😁 I'd love to hear back from you when you are able-to help with the digging, I sent it 4/27/2023. Thank you so much man!

Sorry I posted this under the wrong video: Great video and a new subscriber here. Question: I have a 2022 Supra 2.0 with the B46/48. Would adding the JB+ ( not JB4) require that I upgrade any part of the engine as it adds 20-30hp and torque? Thank you!

13:47 all good but b48 does NOT share the same rods as b58, the stock rods of b48 wont hold the horses for long. Also the N20 was not the first 4 cyl direct injection engine, it was the N43.
@VehicularDIY
@VehicularDIY Жыл бұрын
The part number for the B58 rods is 11248623419, only comes in a set of 6 and the part number for the B48 is 11248623418 and it comes in a set of 4. The only reason the part number is one digit off is due to the quantity of rods you get. You can punch those part numbers in on google to see they are identical. Also the N43 is not turbo charged, I had mentioned that the N20 was the first direct injection turbo charged engine. Otherwise BMW was making turbo 4-cylinder engines in the late 60s in the 2002 ti.
