A LOT of routine maintenance, I'm gearing up to do a valve cleaning here when I find the time, oil blow by gets into the intake tract and creates carbon build up inside the intake valves choking off air flow to the engine. I took the manifold off and LOTS of carbon crud on the walls and valves themselves, an upgraded PCV valve and oil catch can should alleviate the build up but it still needs to be cleaned.
@teekay_1 Жыл бұрын
I thought the secret was that they all end up leaking oil.
@BozoBlaster12 Жыл бұрын
They do, the oil filter housing gasket will eventually fail, leaking oil down the front and drivers side of the engine, oil will get on the serpentine belt and over time saturating the oil and stretching the belt which can then result in it slipping making awful belt squeaking and then it can slip out and get wedged in between your harmonic balancer and push its way back the front main seal I to the oil pan, and if your lucky the power steering pulley might hit the subframe from hitting a pothole and breaking the guides for the pulley and can shred the softened belt up like it did to me! Which can also push pieces instead of the whole belt into the front main seal. It's a plastic pulley like everything else so I replaced with an aluminum pulley. If you don't replace the gasket this can all happen and lead to catastrophic engine failure.

It is that good!

Thanks for subbing! There are two places where even stock it impresses me, sometimes if you hit the torque just right at around 20 mph it'll put you back and from 80 to 100 mph it really moves. Might be going into an over boost. The lighter front end really sets it apart, the G80 M3 had an amazing front end but you could still feel the weight. The M340i felt clumsy at times, if you get it wrong that back end would want to swing around quick.
@boostlee876 Жыл бұрын
Nice key point to mention the N55’s potential if it had forged internals. The M235i and OG M2 have forged connecting rods and forged crank so power potential is substantially higher than with a 335i N55. But because of the N55 being sandwiched between the N54 and B58 the N55 ends up being underrated and overlooked.

As a last gen F30 328i owner right before they introduced the B48 and 330i name (again). I always wondered why there was no major performance parts for the 328i. Other than those early N20s having that timing chain failure looming overhead the final year of the 328i was the N26, still open deck etc but no timing chain issues, and some other throw ins for reliability/efficiency. For the 4 cylinder community this is one of the few vehicles that has a longitudinally mounted engine that sits behind the front axle. It’s such a fun car to drive and handles great. Compared to some of the understeery fwd “fun” vehicles. Plus I agree with your take on the pricing of the 330i and M340i. It’s tough to find a low mileage example of the M340 for under 45k. Meanwhile I bought my 2016 in 2019 with 16k miles (spotless carfax) for 25k. BMWs are BMWs and they’ll still do BMW shit but my car has been reliable since I’ve owned it. Tires, oil change, and brake fluid change and bleed is the only maintenance I’ve had done but I am just hitting 56k miles.

I can’t thank you enough for such an informative video. I wouldn’t be modifying this, just curious about the reliability as a daily driver for years to come. I’m concerned about the timing components being at the rear, but I do feel better now knowing that the balance shaft is gear-driven. I believe these have 3 water pumps, which also seems a little concerning for long-term reliability, but on the other hand, it’s good to see cooling is a priority.

Thank you for this video. It affirms that Bmw hasn't made a good reliable 4 cylinder engine in a long time. Okay now I'm impressed with this little four banger and currently looking for an x3 with this motor. What year should I be looking at and what is needed to get me to that 360-380WHP?

The B48 is a cool engine I had one as a rental when the G20 was first released from BMW it was a 330i. I wasnt crazy about the sound but the torque was more than adequate.I like how you broke down these engines from 6 to 4 cylinder and their similarities through N to B. I would love to see some modded G20 330is none in my area yet that I have seen.

Yeah the torque stock is pretty decent, similar to the N20. The fake sound they pipe through the speakers is terrible, I wonder if I can code it with the B58 sound design lol, seems like they tried to make it sound like a EJ20 wrx flat 4 on the 330i.

@@VehicularDIYThat would be awesome to code in the B58 sound. Ya they tried to go with that Subaru EJ sound but it didnt quite work out. Im sure it would sound good with a decent exhaust or muffler.The trans behavior was excellent as well. Interior was beautiful

Thanks for making this! As an owner of a 230i with the B48, I was surprised that there is very little info about these. I only have bootmod3, but the car is still a lot of fun and as you mentioned the motor behind the front axle just feels great to drive. I'm curious to see what turbo you get, I've been eyeing the Pure Turbo.

In the same boat as you man got a 320i stage 1 plus I call it. Cause its literally the same as a 330i stage 1 now! Crazy right

The balance shafts in B48 are 1:1 from N47 diesel engines. The same concept.

I don't even think anyone at BMW would argue that Honda makes the best 4 bangers. So why not copy the strengths of a K-series, fix the weaknesses, build your own engine that is better, and build legends in the process?

I am a new subscriber and simply want to praise you for the informative and helpful content of your videos. I came across a video of yours from approx 5 years ago titled long cranks on your E90 if i recall correctly. After beginning my research on an issue with cold cranks on my 2007 328i. I am thinking it could possibly be the fuel pressure regulator.
@VehicularDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks for subbing and for the kind words! Yeah it's one of the first places to start on a long crank. If its got over 100k miles might want to just replace it for maintenance anyway.

got a 335i e92 like 8 months ago, took it for a major service when I got it and it was well looked after 97 000 kms on the clock. So far it has been treating me well and drives like a dream. Standard kept except for miltek exhausts but will add aluminum charge pipe eventually. Here in sa we do not have issues with the HPFP but I heard this is common in america due to the petrol ethanol ratio's or something to that effect.
