Whenever “peace in our time” is used in a movie, always expect something bad. It’s a reference to Neville Chamberlain (although it’s a misquote) and his 1938 deal with Hitler to allow Germany to annex part of Czechoslovakia, with the agreement that it would stop there. Chamberlain came back to the U.K. waving the signed treaty and boasting about “peace for our time.” Needless to say, things went downhill from there. The big Iron Man suit used to fight Hulk is called “Veronica” because in the Archie comics, Archie had two girls trying to be his girlfriend, Betty (the nice blonde one) and Veronica (the mean, scheming black-haired one) and Bruce has a girlfriend named Betty (from the Incredible Hulk movie, remember?).

A lot of seeds for the future were planted in this movie. This movie is so much like a comic book by the way it uses subplots that later come to fruition. Vision and Wanda first noticing each other, Thor setting out to investigate after he realizes that something is wrong behind the scenes, Thor's vision showing the vague outline of the Infinity Gauntlet with all the so far revealed Infinity Stones, the fact that the Mind Stone is actually a part of Vision, Steve and Tony's bickering while they're at Clint's farm, the mention of Wakanda along with Klaw, Natasha's flashing back to her Red Room days when she was training to become a Black Widow, how Wanda looses it when her brother is killed, the Hulk choosing to exile himself, and Cap's longing for Peggy. I love how the set-up for one of the major payoffs in "Avengers: Endgame" is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment in this movie.
@jonathancampbell5231
@jonathancampbell5231 2 жыл бұрын
"Set up" is a bit too much credit. If you red and watch interviews, it's clear they were making things up as they went along most of the time. What actually happened is that the movies are based on comics so they just throw in some references and see if they'll pick them up later- Tony and Steve bickering wasn't meant to lead into Civil War for instance, because they weren't planning to make Civil War in the first place; they only changed it at the last minute (from Captain America: Serpent Society) because the Batman v Superman movie was announced and Marvel decided they needed their own "versus" hero film.

A few things. 1. Hulk is *incredibly* resilient. It takes an absurd amount to even hurt him, let alone break his skin. A building falling on him would barely scuff him up. 2. Tony outright said that Ultron wasn't done yet. He woke up before he was supposed to, before they had any safeguards in place to prevent exactly what he went on to do. 3. Jarvis became Vision. They mentioned it a few times, calling him 'the vision', so I get you not catching it.

When this came out, their was so much setting up for future films that many people were annoyed that there was too much. The actor who played Jarvis didn't know there was a plan to make him a super-hero (named The Vision). A LOT will happen in the next movies before the 3rd Avengers film, but, yes, Wanda is wayyyyy more powerful than her brother, and the answer to all your Thanos questions is Yes!
2 жыл бұрын
Paul Bettany also couldn't rely on the comics to know what their plan was for Jarvis, since (as you probably know :D) in the comics, The Vision and Tony aren't connected in any way (and neither, of course, are The Vision and Jarvis).

If you want to blame someone for how long it is before Black Widow's solo movie, the name to blame is Ike Perlmutter. He was one of the main producers until about the time this one came out, essentially Disney stepped in to remove him and put Kevin Feige in charge due to some behind the scenes stuff, and it was apparently Perlmutter who kept pushing back Black Widow and a few other projects for various reasons. You might notice a slight change of tone in films from the next couple of films onwards, and that's one reason why that happened.

Perlmutter was also the executive in charge at Marvel when they licensed out many of their big properties (X-Men, Spider Man, Fantastic Four, etc.) to film studios in the early '90s. The cash influx from those deals saved Marvel financially but the terms of the licenses (open ended as long as said studios made films every x number of years) was very short sighted.

Oh, those are some high-quality happy-kitty sounds from Beans. Can I please get, like, 10 hours of that? "Everything happened, a lot. So much." is a very accurate summary of this film. Just a note on the Scepter; it wasn't Loki's so much as it was given to Loki by Thanos, as one of the tools he could use to conquer Earth (along with the Chitauri army). Rewatching the first Avengers, you can see how it appears to have twisted Loki's mind in the same way it almost did to the Avengers on the Helicarrier just before Hawkeye's attack, inculcating anger, suspicion, and paranoia (though, to be honest, Loki didn't need much of a push in that direction to begin with). Eugene O'Neill was an American playwright, born in 1888. He's known for bringing the techniques of realism associated with Chekov (of the famous "Chekov's Gun" rule of narratives, that being "if you introduce a gun in the first act, it must have been fired by the third". Basically, it's just saying "don't have unnecessary elements in your story, as they're distracting and take up time. Know what you're trying to say, and just say that") to America. Many of O'Neill's plays were marked by characters being ground into despair by tragedy and pessimism. More to the point, one of O'Neill's most famous plays is "Long Day's Journey into Night", which is often accompanied by works like "A Streetcar Named Desire" in lists of the best-ever of US theatre. The reason Bruce wants to leave during the Sokovia battle is that, after his uncontrolled Hulk attack on the city triggered by Wanda, he's terrified that his next transformation will result in a lot of innocent blood being shed. Like, oceans of it. Tony got lucky that there happened to be an unoccupied skyscraper nearby to drop on Big Green and bring him back to reality(ish). No telling if the Avengers would be able to stop an unbridled Hulk again.

I really like AOU, more than the first one. Yes it has some shoehorned stuff and some weird pacing, but it has some of the best moments and interactions in the MCU. Avengers fighting as a team from the start, friction between cap and tony bubbling, hulkbuster, James Spader's voice, Vision and Wanda foreshadowing, the superior version of Quicksilver. The Vision and Ultron scene is beautiful and brought a tear to my eye in the theatre

The first Avengers movie is superior to AOU. This one didn't offer anything new. It was mostly a bridge installment film. Some great moments for sure like the party scene where they're taking turns trying to lift the hammer. And of course Vision's birth was awesome. Overall the movie was uneven.

I admit I've liked it less and less as time has passed. I've never been comfortable with Joss Whedon's style of humour, right back to Buffy days. His habit of putting a sudden comedic moment in an otherwise serious scene gives me whiplash and takes me out of the film. Also, there's an irritating quipiness to his dialogue that feels uncomfortable. His dialogue feels like... dialogue, not people talking naturally. It's a balance the other Avengers films pull off much more naturally, balancing conversation with exposition and humour instead of quirky non sequiturs. It's by no means a bad movie but it rubs me the wrong way. I'd never criticise someone for liking it though. My problems are largely a matter of personal taste.

Veronica is also known as the Hulk Buster. Every time Tony invents something or updates something, you have to think back to what he learned previously. His main goal is always about keeping people safe, whether it is the public at large, or one of his friends/ family. When Vision grabbed hold of Ultron, he locked him out of his ability to transfer his consciousness so that when they kill him this time he can't replicate. They named him Vision because Thor said "he had a vision" and it was of the mind stone. Wanda is known as the Scarlet Witch in the comics and her "brother" was meant to be "Quicksilver" but in the comics and in the X-Men movies they established that Quicksilver is someone else, so officially we are just supposed to ignore the fact that they were called the twins and that guy was even a silver-haired speedster. Technically... they are both in alternate universes. Yeah, Marvel likes messing with reality and continuity.

Yeah, this movie had a weird reception "arc". People liked it initially... Then when people started picking it apart cinematically, they starting crapping on it. But as the years passed, people realized that a movie doesn't have to be cinematically perfect for it to still be a great movie. Well done scenes, characters, dialogue, great plot elements that set the stage for several movies (something that was only apparent AFTER those other movies came out, probably attributing to the delay in appreciation). Overall, after everything settled, I consider it one of the core "good ones" in the MCU for me.

Joss Whedon said he found making the movie to be super stressful and he was making a lot of the script up even in the middle of shooting- to an experienced film critic, it shows, as some scenes feel a bit disjointed and unnecessary (there is also a lot of scenes designed to set up future movies, many of which didn't really add anything in hindsight). Ultron's motives are also a little confusing since he wants to save the world by killing a whole bunch of people and it's not clear how that works out. Here's the thing about Thor's Hammer (and I'm just going off the movies). This is just my own fan-theory, but I think it's well-supported. Thor's Hammer has awareness. It's not a full-on AI with self-awareness, but it is capable of making intelligent choices according to its programming. It doesn't try to communicate because communication is not its function. It doesn't have feelings, but it understands morality. 1. It was forged from the core of a dying star. That tells me it's made, at least in part, of neutronium. It's a substance that is made entirely of neutrons packed together as tightly as they possibly can. By comparison, a human body or a mountain is made of smoke. I think the hammer itself is a container for neutronium core and to house the AI. The hammer may actually weigh thousands of tonnes from a tiny grain of neutronium. 2. Magic "exists" in the Marvel setting, but the first Thor movie makes it clear that magic is just very advanced science that we don't understand yet. So the idea of "worthiness" is judged by the AI within the hammer. Given the link between magic and willpower, it can only search the mind of someone who picks it up. 3. The hammer's advanced construction allows it to control the force of gravity. This is self-evident; no one unworthy can lift it, but as Cap implied, one could put it on an elevator and the elevator would be able to lift it. It also doesn't shatter Tony's table. It's not that it's fixed in space, the AI within it simply increases or decreases the effective mass of the hammer as appropriate. Like, if I lift with 100 lbs of force, it now weighs 110 lbs. As soon as I let go, it returns to its previous mass and no harm's done. It perfectly opposes any force applied to it so that it remains fixed in place, even if the thing it's on is free to move. A simple object would be unable to do this; awareness is required. 4. It can also generate massive electric fields when Thor mentally commands it to. He can fly by flinging the hammer; it's light enough to swing, but when released it exploits its massive momentum to pull Thor along. It does this in response to Thor's thoughts, but it's also working with him.
@sea-envy3137
@sea-envy3137 2 жыл бұрын
Well, Asgardian magic is Clark Tech but other magics do exist Very good "worthiness" example is in Avengers vs Justice League- Wonder Woman is able to pick up the hammer and fight bad guys but when the fighting is over, she cannot casually pick it up and hand it to him because she does not need to lift the hammer right now. Just like the theory that Cap could not have fully lifted it at the party because a **** measuring contest was not a worthy reason.

Heck, one reserve Avenger Matt Hawk died before the Avengers even formed.

"Veronica" is typically called the Hulk-Buster armour. The Veronica moniker is a joke based on the idea that she's one of two women capable of stopping a truly rampaging Hulk: his original girlfriend, Betty, and Veronica (as in the Archie Comics).

Wanda is one of, if not the best Marvel characters, Elizabeth Olsen plays her fantastically.

Amazing how the little sister of the Olsen twins stepped out and made a name for herself.

I don't mean this in a mean way, but why? I haven't seen WandaVision, but I gave it a miss because I found Wanda (and Vision) to be really dull characters.

@@tortoiseoflegends4466 disagree, I think Elizabeth Olsen is a great actress, but that’s just my opinion.

@@gabrielmauller8137 I don't mean her acting, I mean the character. Olsen works well with what she's given but I don't understand why people like Wanda.

The "Veronica" defense system is a bit of an injoke because Banner's longtime romantic interest in the comics and first movie was named Betty (Betty & Veronica from the Archie comics)

Ultron = James Spader...part of the Brat pack days of the 80s. Him and Robert Downey, Jr. were very close (still are?) and did some crazy good movies together. Less Than Zero for one. Spader's voice is mesmorizing.

How many of you had watched the Blacklist before seeing this movie and thus enjoyed it more cause of how Spader played Reddington in that, and then here he is as Ultron, and at times brought that Reddington charisma to Ultron.
