Avengers Endgame was definitely in store for some amazing VFX. Including a revamped “Professor Hulk”. Just look at the detail in the way the pores stretch and flex with his skin! Incredible!
This sequence of Tony Stark, lost in space on the M-ship, was mostly done by Cinesite, who created the lonely exterior shots of the ship and retouched Nebula’s eyes to make them blacker. Her CG robotic arm was added by them too and they also did the visual effects for the sequence where she gets the orb and damages her arm in the process.
Cinecite also took care of the chase between the Outriders and Hawkeye beneath the rubble of the Avengers’ base.
Choreographing the interaction between these 8 limbed creatures was a pretty challenging.
They created multiple animation cycles of the way the Outriders move, which included running, climbing, crawling and leaping.
The scenes were blocked out first, which basically means key poses are created to establish timing and placement of characters and props in a given scene or shot and the animation was then later refined for each creature.
One key aspect of Cinesite’s work was environments.
For example, this shot was made up of CG buildings vehicles, and multiple bluescreen shots of extras positioned on cards placed in Nuke, to bulk out the shot.
The sequence that involved Ant-Man giving Tony a “mild cardiac dysrhythmia” was also Cinesite’s doing...
Now, personally, despite how disappointing the character was for some, the VFX work done on Professor Hulk was insane!
What’s also insane is how many different VFX companies worked together on this move, 14!
Framestore developed their Machine-learning technology in order to create a quick first pass animation that could be used to help filmmakers decide on the edit before beginning the process of refining.
Keyframe animation was then deployed for over 60 shots of Professor Hulk.
This procedure of capturing the performance was key for the animators.
A new facial capture system was also created by ILM, specifically to make Smart Hulk look as close to actor Mark Ruffalo as possible.
Getting the look right look and performance also involved scans, facial capture and hand animation of the actor, as well as some concept art for reference.
Digital Domain and Weta Digital incorporated new proprietary software to put more detail into the face.
Now, seeing as Hulk’s face a lot larger than Bruce’s, tiny changes to his face had a big effect on the performance. So, a new subset of facial shapes was built to give animators more control in the animation allowing them to achieve more complex, subtle expressions.
When it came to shooting Captain America fighting his younger self, this was filmed on a green soundstage.
Yep, everything other than the bridge floor they’re standing on and a set of stairs was greenscreen!
The only problem was, all the detail added in the amazing CG set made it more confusing to follow the action on closeups. So, in order to get a cleaner silhouette of the Cap, they had to go back and sneakily do things like blur areas and add more atmosphere to make the Caps pop out more.
For the Cap fighting the Cap, they filmed actor Chris Evans fighting a stunt double and had VFX company Lola track Evans’ face onto the stunt double’s face.
And finally, for the portals scene in the final battle, before Tony Stark does the whole switcheroo with the infinity stones, showing them off like engagement rings,
Weta Digital’s digital matte painting department created completely CG environments and compiled multiple passes that were each rendered through their respective portals with the same camera movement in order to key together and parallax in this incredible scene.

People think this is easy. This takes great talented people and genius minds to bring this to life. 3D animators and visual artists should be greatly recognized for their hard work. Also, for those who heavily criticize the new era of CGI, you are welcome to go back to animatronics and puppetry art form. Lets see how it goes in this era hahahahah. And i dont have anything against the old school masterminds.

I can assure you more people will watch a movie with big stars and no to less CGI then only newcomers with no big names in it and having these amazing VFX.

I think fame and popularity adds to an actors paychecks. No one is supposed to know who the VFX artists are because their job is literally to make things unnoticeable and to be invisible themselves to not destroy the illusion. It sucks, yea, and I do think they should get payed more for their talents, but at the end of the day, Hollywood and audiences only reward extroversion, idolizing, popularity and famous figures, rather than introversion and behind the scenes talents. that's just the way of modern life, but it makes sense! like, you might have made the stage, but your actor friend will be the one gathering the attention while on that stage, your stage looks so good no one will notice it which is good news for the artist, but bad for his pay since you're not the one in the spot light. The only introverts that can make as much or even more money than actors are Writers of books and Directors of film.

The truth of the situation is that the VFX work in these movies gets awarded to a VFX production company. And awarded is the word as multiple VFX companies would present bids (budgets) for the VFX being quoted and usually the cheapest bid wins unless the preferred house has the reputation to command a higher pay-day. The VFX ARTISTS that the VFX production company employs are paid a salary not necessarily commensurate with the scale of the project. They would still get overtime as authorized but the production company still has to do the within the budget they presented to Marvel Studios unless Marvel Studios kept changed the scope and scale of the original ask. As a scenario, imagine if Lebron James comes to a restaurant you own and wants you to cater his daughter's birthday party. The people working in the restaurant would likely get paid the same as they would every other day but any extra money earned by the LeBron James contract would go to the restaurant and any bonuses/tips would be distributed after the fact.

But the true Mindblowing stuff is the people who made that. So much Fine-Detailed Work. This is why the MCU is among the BEST CGI Produced Movies for me. I don’t know but I feel like a lot of the cgi grouping tactics used here were pioneered by George Lucas and Lucas Film in the Star Wars prequels. The very first shots of the clones comes to mind as well as the droid army from The Phantom Menace. It’s cool to see how far the industry has developed since then.

Viewer 2017 really enjoyed this! I especially liked your vocal breakdown of scenes with descriptions of how it was done. How else would I know? I can watch videos but that doesn't explain it. Thank you and may I ask how you know all of this considering I haven't reviewed much more of your videos, but will take a look.

I also think him explaining some of it is really useful. Otherwise, some of these things would be hard to understand.

Oh and also, it's not "just an animation movie." Animation and CGI are completely different. CGI you have to use real actors and capture their emotions and expressions, let alone you have people there actually performing. Animation is just an actor's recorded voice put to a character. In CGI the actor has to wear a ridiculous outfit so they can capture their normal movements and facial expressions, not just put their recorded voice in to a movie.

The Actors/actress play ‘pretend’ for a living. They are told what to say, given directions on set by the director, producer, dressed by wardrobe, styled by a stylist, Then the actors who haven’t done very much take all the credit for the movie, win awards and make millions. The Oscar should go to the visual artist computer geek who is for hours doing all the work behind the screen.

2:58 I feel like when video reviewers make comments like "Despite how disappointing the character maybe have been for some," they really mean "Although *I* was disappointed in this character." I for one thought Professor Hulk was spectacular. Very expressive in ways he couldn't be before. There was subtlety to his rage, but it was still there if you paid attention. A perfect example is the way he sets his jaw in the scene where Ant-Man gets pissy with him over the Pym Particles. Amazing CGI work, but also great characterization on the parts of Ruffalo and the Russos.
