Why do writers seems to forget the Phoenix CAN be controlled and do good? Jean Grey (who was not the dark Phoenix, plz read the comics instead of Fox movies) and Rachel did SO much good with Phoenix and never lost control. When the Phoeniz CHOSE the Host, it doesn't end like this or DP. Jean and Rachel always controlled the bird, thats why the entity chose then. So she could became something knew and even more powerful. She also chose Hope. If Tony Srtak didn't f*ck with the bird splitting her in 5 to possed 5 non chosen host, this would NOT have happened.

Watsonian versus Doylist reasoning Watsonian logic: Tony doesn't know how the Phoenix works, nobody outside of the people who have been possessed by the Phoenix knows how it works it feels like. That's why Tony tried to destroy it, because when your logic set doesn't have all the information that it needs to make the informed decision, you are gonna choose what you believe is the best option. If EVERYONE knew how the Phoenix truly worked and allowed to peacefully choose the host, then none of this would have happened, but you can't fault the characters for not knowing things. And then they wanted to get involved into mutants problems that they didn't even undestood. 2 - Hope was being trained to control Phoenix. Cyclops' Daughter Rachel had controlled Phoenix Force for years with no problem. But the Avengers decided to invade a sovereign territory to kidnap Hope. 4 - Phoenix had possesed Cyclops and the others because of Tony Stark. 5 -Even being good to people, Avengers kept fighting the Phoenix five making them lost control. 6- In the end, Hope did exactly what Cyclops said she would. This story was a bit of a mess... the Avengers were right that bringing the Phoenix to Earth was originally not a good idea, but when the Phoenix Five were created and brought about WORLD PEACE they decided to continuously antagonize them until they fought back, ultimately leading to their corruption. The scene where (literally) Obama talks to Cap (who agrees) that the LITERAL WORLD PEACE that the Phoenix Five made sucks because it was "too easy" is hard to read it's so bad.

I HATE how this comic takes A HUGE dump on Cyclops. When Jean was the Phoenix she blew up an entire solar system and killed millions but everyone instantly forgave her because 'the Phoenix was controlling her.' But when all Cyclops does is kill Professor X everyone treats him like he's hitler.

super late comment but several key differences there: 1) the x men barely knew what the phoenix force was when it first possessed jean grey 2) cyclops was arrogant as hell, thinking he can somehow use the phoenix force to his advantage, even though he CLEARLY knew how it overwhelmed his ex-girlfriend in the past and literally everyone was telling him how absolute power can/will corrupt absolutely. 3) the phoenix force took over jean grey while cyclops willingly knocked his current girlfriend in order to take her half of the phoenix force. 4) jean grey was never team leader but cyclops was. 5) cyclops murdered his adopted father and mentor, not just some random stranger.

3 years after, still, i can't let it pass. As a Jean fan, i want to say something: The X Men NEVER forgived Dark Phoenix. Jean Grey was NOT Dark Phoenix. If you read X Factor, you will see that Jean was unconscious in the ocean the hole time. What hapoend was: Jean cryed for help to solve the X men from the Solar Flair, the Phoenix come to her and turn her body into a Jean Look alike. Then, she rakes Jean Grey memories and humanity so she can experience then. It was so strong she even thinks she was Jean Grey. Until she see Jean Grey body alive in her feet. So she put Jean body in a cocoon and put her in ta ocean to heal her wounds. Jean accepted to be replaced by Phoenix so she can save the X men.

Massive differences. Jean didn’t want the Phoenix force, she did everything she could to try and suppress/get rid of it. Cyclops not only knew it was coming but pushed Hope to embrace it when she didn’t want to knowing full well every time it showed up before it was bad news. Then once possessed he never once regretted it. He happily accepted its power and even actively worked to take more, at least some of the other Phoenix five saw what it was doing to them and wanted it to stop. Also after all was said and done and Scott’s hands where covered in blood (wasn’t just Xavier but thousands in Wakanda, etc) he didn’t regret anything.

One of the worst events in Marvel history. Why did it happen... oh yeah, because Captain America showed up to a sovereign nation with a helicarrier full of avengers making demands. Due to a culmination of events stemming from a member of HIS team decimating the mutant population. Not only that , but where the heck were the avengers when governments of the world openly armed themselves with giant robots designed to hunt mutants? The Axis event revealed that Tony Stark manufactured adamantium sentinels during Civil War, The Avengers were no help when the Phoenix showed up the first time, and the same was true this time around . Rodgers and Stark just decided they knew better than the people on earth that know the Phoenix best. Their grand plan?? Take hope from Utopia and have her train with Iron Fist with Peter Parker parables in the background for 3 days. I keep seeing people say something to the effect of "Cyclops was risking the whole planet for the chance of mutant resurgence " , which much like this video, is a complete oversimplification in an attempt to obfuscate the fact that if the Phoenix wants to come to earth , the Phoenix is going to come to earth, no matter how hard the avengers assemble. The best bet was hope becoming its host. You act as though Jean Grey INSTANTLY went dark Phoenix and wanted to destroy earth when she inherited the Phoenix force . Hope could have simply become the host, undone Wanda's hex, and joined the X-Men , or became a member of S.W.O.R.D. ( I bet you Abigail Brand would hire her) , or the Guardians of the Galaxy, or the Shiar Royal Guard, or just roam the multiverse. If Hope Summers becoming cosmically powerful is a threat that cannot persist , how come Captain America never showed up to the Baxter building with a hellicarrier full of Avengers , to tell the Fantastic Four that he's there to take Franklin Richards?! As a child he proved himself powerful enough to warp reality on a grand enough scale to create a pocket universe, which lead to "Heroes Reborn". Then there's Bendis... Dude played a significant role in ruining the Xmen present day, and is responsible for 2 of the worst events I've ever read... AvX and Civil War 2 ( which sets the stage for Inhumans vs Xmen which was equally lousy). I get it, the guy brought us Ultimate Spider-Man, some dope New Avengers titles , & Alias, but dude has zero respect for continuity that he himself didn't create , and he clearly didn't give a crap during his Xmen run. Let him write the Defenders and keep it pushing. Cyclops was right, and the fact that writers have so blatantly tried to vilify him is pretty disappointing. Xavier's dream was proven ineffective , and Magneto's was too extreme. Cyclops split the difference and achieved what neither of them could within the span of a few years. He simply drew a line in the sand and said mutants will not be aggressors; however, under no circumstances was he going to allow the world to force mutants into extinction. Yes he killed Xavier while going dark Phoenix ( which couldn't have happened if hope was the host as intended) but who tf is Steve Rodgers to be his judge and jury? All while still having the people responsible for House of M, Ultron, Planet Hulk, world war hulk, avengers disassembled, etc on his squad. Wolverine can eat a bag of paper clips, his sanctimony in both Schism and AvX was as infuriating as it was inauthentic. Steve Rodgers is an assclown, and stop trying to replace the Xmen with Inhumans, no one is going for it. Especially not going for Inhumans vs X-Men being used to further dump on Cyclops , the Inhumans GASED THE PLANET , but Cyclops is the bad guy for dispersing one of the clouds posthumously.

Ether Dose I'm just tired of Marvel insulting their readership by putting out event after event with Swiss cheese plots, and expecting us to pay ever increasing prices for them. Spending the better part of the last decade trying to marginalize and vilify the X-Men ( Cyclops in particular ) in order to keep the Avengers smelling like daisies and force the Inhumans on us. Then putting out an absurd amount of titles , assuming their readership can and will pay for these growing pull lists. I sincerely hope that Marvel Generations gets things back on track in the sense that they focus on good storytelling instead of inorganic events. It would also be great if they could take steps to silence these incredibly myopic people who dedicate entire KZbin channels to bellyaching about Diversity in comics , and yes I am talking about you @diversity&comics . There is more than enough room within effective storytelling for speaking candidly about societal injustices , the inequities of The human psyche, the triumph of the human spirit , as well as costumed heroes punching people and saving the world, all while being truly inclusive and not just randomly tossing in a minority character without setting up their origin or motivations , and most importantly without bringing in minority writers , illustrators, or editors at a commensurate rate. Then turn around and blame diminishing sales on diversity. When black panther written by Coates was one of your best sellers of 2016 , people love Kamala Khan, people love Ri Ri Williams, and Cho as Hulk is somewhat growing on me personally. Your sales are down because the events have been lousy and you're releasing too many titles ( many of which get roped up in the lousy events ). I keep hearing people griping about " ohh marvel is doing too much sjw!! Snowflake snowflake triggered sjw!!" Have several seats little man. A true artists is a gatekeeper of truth, someone that can objectively critique their society instead accepting the status quo because it preserves your privilege , in spite of the fact that doing so flies in the face of everything a true democracy is supposed to be. So either admit that what you truly want is the quasi police state oligarchy America is well on its way to being, or hold your country accountable because you want to see it realize it's potential. But hey, that's just me.

Ugh this is some trashy Marvel propaganda piece to try and say the X-Men were wrong here. My thoughts on this terribly written and conceptualized "event": 1) The two defining reasons why the Avengers loose their shit over the Phoenix Force is because Nova says it destroyed a planet (and also revitalized others) and because Tony had some stupid arc where he had to deal with a alternate reality Dark Phoenix Jean Grey. The Avengers had worked and partnered with Rachel Summers when she was Phoenix during Secret Wars II and had no problem with her and had no problem with Jean Grey as Phoenix prior to her death in Morrison's run. But now it's an issue. 2) The Avengers and X-Men have worked together as allies on several occasions. But the few times were the Avengers should have been there to help out (cough cough Genosha, cough cough Scarlet Witch, cough cough anti-mutant sentiment after HoM) they were silent. Or missing. Or showed up after the fact to demand/request help from people they placed in a concentration camp (aka their mansion). The first time they actually came and tried to help was when Bastion attacked, and that was after SEVERAL times of the X-Men fighting for them but not being allowed in their events. And then shortly after Marvel starts writing Scott out of character, aka Children's Crusade, demanding the death of SW. lordy lou. 3) Cap goes to Wolverine as the Phoenix "expert". Not the omega level tp/tk at his school who was the longest running host, who also controlled it and suppressed it on a few occasions. And he wants to kill Hope? 4) They show up to Utopia, a mutant sovereign nation, to forcefully take Hope, a mutant child. Repeat, your first tactical move to show up at your allies sovereign nation to forcefully one of their children. You show up with all your Avengers to battle your "allies" but not really share intel or discuss ways things could be resolved before you get to this point? No wonder Cyclops blasted him first if threatened with move or be moved. 5) Tony blows up the Phoenix Force, sending it into the Phoenix 5, who then save the planet. But instead of working with the P5, the Avengers decide let's just keep attacking them until they go bad and we can then say "Look they went bad we were right the whole time!!" 6) The Avengers have never dealt with the Phoenix Force before, but Spider-Man and Iron Fist are the most qualified trainers for Hope. Not a former host. Who was at that point then siding against the P5. And 7) Marvel introduced a former host (before Jean) who was an Asian red-head who was also the Iron Fist to strike the first blow in making the PF a Marvel wide force. We now have seen a Vision Phoenix, we have Thane as a Phoenix host, and now a 1 Million BC Phoenix host/Force that was lovers with Odin. Why? Because Marvel has no original ideas for the characters they are interested in (everyone but the X-Men and FF) and is now mining concepts that were strictly defining things for the X-Men to give to other characters. 8) This was supposed to make the Avengers the winners and seem like the heroes (because the MCU was in full effect of the Marvel Office then). Some feel that way, others don't. 9) Marvel needs to stop making terribly shitty events. AvX. AXIS. Secret Wars. Inhumans vs X-Men. Secret Empire. They need to seriously rethink how to better make company-wide events without them being hero vs hero, because we are over them. /RANT lol

@Arqost Cyclops learned how to control the phoenix. Oronganllly the Phoenix post to go with him but Avengers ruined everything and made Phoenix possed five Xmen members that made things worse. When Cyclops helped the poor and fed the hungry with Phoenix powers and he was protecting human and that was the first time humans started to like mutants until Avengers ruined it. Its like the Avengers doesn't want Xmen to be sussecful of making peace with humans.

Scott on the other hand didn't trust Wanda (which to be fair, is reasonable considering her past actions), but in no way was he willing to give up his powers and ended up snapping because he couldn't control them. So no. He didn't "save" the mutants, he just tried to play God with the world and got knocked down hard.

I think both sides had a point, but acted uncharacteristic for whatever reason. Cyclops was right because the Phoenix was connected to the mutants and could bring them back. Plus they had MUCH more experience to handle the situation and such. Captain America was right in the fact it was not a guarantee to save the mutant race, and it killed its previous hosts and was known to devour planets, so just letting it come to earth wasn’t necessarily a great idea. In addition to that, Hope wasn’t physically or mentally ready for the Phoenix, and things honestly would’ve gotten extremely messy if the mutants had it their way from the get go. However, both leaders act way differently than they usually do. Neither are reasonable in hearing the other out, they send their men (mostly the Avengers) to attack each other for no reason, and try to forcefully label each other as wrong. Although I love the Avengers, I really didn’t like how they were treated as if they were right. I think both sides were right yet wrong, and acted way out of line of their usual behavior for drama and action.

The Avengers have much more raw power, Thor could probably solo the X-Men. Both teams are great, but there is a definenet power difference. For example, Magneto has contended with entire X-Men teams, but he was defeated by Iron Man, a mid-level Avenger. Other examples: Spider-Man nearly defeated an entire X-Men team on his own Iron Man DID defeat an X-Men team, though it was not the main one.

The video isn't totally accurate. Schism was really over whether or not mutants should train to be combatants in their new reality. Logan thinks he and the experienced X-Men can protect everyone all of the time and to let the kids be kids while Scott says there are only 192 mutants left on Earth and they all need to know how to defend themselves in order to survive. Logan wants to live in the past and pretend everything is hunky dory while Scott is just saving the entirety of the mutant race time and time again.

Caleb Lantigua First of all, Doctor Doom was the one who was revealed to be responsible for Wanda's powers going haywire, so she's not really at fault. Second, Logan wasn't being a dick. He actually put all of the remaining money from his family's small fortune into building a school for young mutants, giving them a relatively positive environment to live in, as well as properly educating them, teaching them how to be contributive members of society as well as teaching them how to defend themselves and others as X-men should. Scott on the other hand, hand made a number of dick moves as leader.

Imagine a story where M.O.D.O.K. shows up at a guys house, demands they let him kill their 15 year old granddaughter, when they say no M.O.D.O.K. destroys the house and injects the family with cosmicly powered PCP.
