Okay, *there is going to be (quite major) spoilers here* but if you want to watch it, there are a few recordings here on KZbin. There's a song near the beginning called "If You Were Gay" where a character called Nicky sings to Rod about how if he was gay, he would still accept him (because he was getting defensive after Nicky mentioned about how he met a gay guy on the subway). Fast forward a little, and we have a song called "Fantasies Come True". In this Rod hears Nicky talking in his sleep. It seems to just be a weird dream, but then Nicky says "I love you, Rod.", and we find that Rod has a crush on Nicky. Then he realises that he was the one dreaming, as he wakes up when Nicky comes to bed. Later, Nicky blurts out his suspicion that Rod is gay. Rod insists he has a girlfriend named Alberta in Vancouver and kicks Nicky out of their apartment. In the end, Rod finally comes out as gay, and Nicky finds him a boyfriend (Ricky), who, save for the body and clothes, looks and talks exactly like Nicky. Rod and Ricky (assumedly) start dating, and as you can see in this video, get married. Hope that clears things up (or not, I'm bad at explanations.). And yes, the fandom is a complete mess. But in all honesty, are there any that aren't?

Sadly, you can't love someone exactly like your beloved because that destroys any chance you may have at getting over them. It's not the replacement you're in love with, they're just a vessel for you to act out your fantasies with your unrequited love. Ricky isn't Nicky, Rod. I know this because at the end of the play when Rod comes out on stage as gay and he asks Nicky to move back in with him Nicky says sure. Then Nicky tells Rod that he put him on this gay dating website (I think) and that's when Ricky comes on stage. Sadly it's not Nicky they would've made a better couple. But hey that's life. That is what Avenue Q play is about. But even so this play was amazing.
