Philips have launched their OLED+908 TV for 2023 that features META technology with Micro Lens Array and the latest P5 7th Generation video processor. We attended the launch event in Barcelona, Spain where the company demonstrated the new TV against its rivals.

Danny mentions a new/updated(?) "Smart bit enhancement" feature. How does this compare to the previous "AI Smart Bit Enhancement 2.0" feature used in their dual picture engine solution?

I understand the reasons behind Danny choosing the MLA panel as opposed to the QD-OLED, although it would be fair to state that it would have been the 2022 panel they reviewed. I’m also thinking that we’ve only onto 2nd generation QD-OLED, and I think 10th generation OLED panel. OLED is a far more mature technology so has that advantage. I’m not a QD-OLED fanboy, but from what I’ve seen and read, it will be in a few generations time. As far as the Samsung is concerned, I think the issue may be the way they are interpreting the colour saturation levels which they did on the earlier model. Still, it’s gonna be a hard decision to make when I upgrade

WebOS sucks. Me and my misses currently own the Philips 807 and LG C2 and we hate the operating system on the LG so much. Also, the aggressive ABL LG can't seem to fix is super distracting to us. So this is why would buy any Philips Oled compared to an LG.

I don't understand the philips representative a bit, he tells us all about the brightness of the new processor. The main feature is the SDR to HDR conversion technology and they really do it better than any other brand. It's important how often you watch movies in HDR and how often movies are in SDR. I watch over-the-air broadcasts on SDR and KZbin on SDR almost 90 percent of the time. That's why it's worth buying Philips TVs! Oh my God, someone appoint me philips marketing director, maybe then people will finally understand why Philips is cooler than LG and Samsung!

Stupid question. Why aren't those LG panel customers not also buy the LG input controller chipset? Is their picture processing bit stuck on the Mediatek chipset? Seems like nearly all of them are in a sort of Mediatek "spell" which they can't get free from and are holding them back.

Philips need to do one with mla & meta one with QD sony did this - the 80 with evo & mla & the 90 QD - one more bright & one punsh color .

LG g3 55" prices dropped £600. Thus I believe OLED908 will drop £2999 to £2300 to stay in line with LG. But LG G3 is now £1999..Making Philips at least £300 dearer...I loved how he finds sticking to better and mature WOLED - Meta than young QD-OLED. He think QD-OLED won't be good enough till 2025..fair enough

I can't believe TV prices are that high in the UK. A 55" G3 in the U.S. is £1699. No wonder why Phillips doesn't sell them there.

Official retail prices for 55OLED908 here in Belgium/ Netherlands is £1990, but most give discount which results in buying price of £1650

All the tv very close i can't say somthing better from others - sony picture , samsung - punsh color - lg the most bright & games - philips the ambilight with balance picture

Ask him why they ruined the 2023 MiniLED(PML9008)? We're talking about it on the forum, apparently the picture is appaling only 140 zones brightness under 1000nits. They also cut nextgen Ambilight and crippled it with SaphiOS.

The way danny exlplained their "vivid" mode is genius. Were still watching top blockbustwrs from hollywood graded to 1000 nits with a dated referenfe monitor. I also feel robbed, if I buy a TV that can do 2000, but only using 1000 of it. I like directors intent, but if that director is using gear from 7 years ago, vs my brand new 2023 TV, id also use this new vivid mode. Push it to 2000 nits, THE PROPER WAY

I dont know... I was really really looking forward to this Philips TV, because they have a certain Philips perceived way to render pictures. But pausing the video at certain moments I really think that the G3 still beats the Philips hands down at the most imporatant picture qualities. At 1:20 you can see the lower part of the biker is much more saturated and pleasing on the G3 than on the 908. The top of the left arm is way brighter on the G3 too. From 1:21 you see the road - but all what it reaveals is a huge processing lag of the video. The lane whites are lagging much behind on the 908 compared to any other two. 1:35 the face is under staturated and less bright - G3 wins again, 1:56 the dome of the catedral is way brighter on the G3, and unforunately for me it seems that in the shadow areas the 908 over brightens the details - elevated near black details? 2:01 the areal view of city, well all white buildings are darker on the 908, samsung wins, G3 second, philips is last. Finally at 2:03 the rectangular garden on the right is again missing tons of brightness and at 2:11 the pyramid lacks color, saturation and brightness too on the 908. I don't know, I'm not convinced at the moment unfortunately. Overall the best TV is still LG's G3 like it or not.

@@NexGenTek if that was the case philips for one hadn't decided to build their 2023-24 tvs around woled panels from LG display. They checked QD oled, compared to woled, and made the decision not to use them. You are way too biased I'm afraid.

While I do agree that more saturated and brighter looks better on first glance, the philips does show more details if you look closely. Much of the detail is washed out on the other panels.

@@DanDemiro I'm sorry but what you perceive as lack of detail on the Samsung and the LG is not else but the much higher brightness. What simply happens is that the recording camera's exposure is set to the philips so the other two brighter tvs look to lose highlight detail but in fact it is just overexposure due to the much higher brightness.

Philips is just bringing its TV's to market too late. Every year they're way behind LG, Samsung etc and don't gain any momentum. In fact by time they're widely available, other brands are heavily discounted.

Was disappointed to hear that as Google TV the U.K. models don’t have BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Ch4 or Ch5 Apps… … as I watch BBC HDR/HLG programmes this is a real issue. Apparently sooner than later to be added was a quote from one retailer, adding they or Phillips would not guarantee availability or subsequent loss of Apps. Also, no regard to folk that hang TVs higher and use separate high end AV Systems, so not having 4 sided Ambilight is also a poor show…

I would never ever buy a TV without ambilight. If you watch TV with lights out (as in cinema) the ambilight is much more immersive and friendly to eyes. You should learn to respect other people's opinion
