Installation, setup, and review of the Spektrum Avian SPMXAE30B Smart Lite 30A brushless ESC. Upgrading my older Hobbyzone AeroScout S 2 1.1m. Programming with the Radiomaster TX16S with EdgeTX 2.8.4 and the new TextGen lua script from the DSM Tools package. Custom reverse control logic on a single momentary switch.

...thanks for explaining the motor reverse feature on my Aeroscout which came with the Avian 30 amp ESC without complicated ESC programming . You were correct....I was able to follow your steps using my Spectrum DX6.

FYI: Be sure to tighten the prop nut very securely before using the reverse thrust. (don't ask how I know)

Hey Shane, OK, I found it and you wanted a comment as to where it is at so here you go. For setting the number of poles for the AreoScout motor, in your transmitter go to Telemetry then to Smart ESC. I had to select it twice to get in. From there you will see that the pole value is inhibited select it and scroll the wheel to the pole number or 14. Back out or save however you have to do it on your transmitter and there you go. Hope this helps you and others.

Thank you, Shane!!! That got me all set up. I have put an afterburner on all my edf jets but just put one on my new viper 70mm and when it is plugged in and I hit the throttle it pulses. Unplugged it's normal. Ever run into that? Hope you're feeling better, and thanks again for always giving such great information. You have made the hobby more enjoyable being we run into tough spots on these things..lol

The motor pulses or the afterburner? I've never used one of those afterburners personally but my first thought is to check the battery voltage on the battery you are using to test. If it's low and the voltage drops below the low volt cutoff, it would start pulsing the motor. Unplug the afterburner and the voltage is a bit higher? Watched some reviews on afterburners and seen some of them "pulse" to look like it igniting. Just a couple thoughts, no experience with those at all...

Shane FYI and for anyone else reading this. That ESC that comes with the new Viper 70mm can not work with the afterburner due to telemetry and fights with the throttle adding that light kit. Thanks again for your help in this video setting up my rev thrust!@@shanesdiy

What extra wire are you referring to to use for an alarm? The yellow wire from the ESC? How would you use that for an alarm?

Yep that yellow wire is for the esc programming box to setup different settings. For people that dont have forward programming. I set up a esc once using the box

@shanesdiy Did you never make a video on how to setup SAFE on the tx16s. I read about so many people on Facebook trying to get SAFE to work. Like what channel or switch . I noticed in this video you had SAFE on ch 7 , is that where SAFE is at or did you make that your own channel

I have many videos on safe and the tx16s, forward programming, etc. Take a look through my "RC Guides" playlist. AeroScout in stock form uses channel 5 for safe on/off. This one is unlocked so I moved safe to ch7. Ch5 is the second aileron so I could do flaperons.

No, reverse thrust through the Avian ESC is separate from Forward Programming. If you have the proper Lua scripts on the radio to program the Avian it doesn't matter if the receiver is locked.

I have an avian esc and I don't have the option for dsm smart rx telemetry on my tx16s how do I get that option? Do I need edgetx or can I do it on open tx

The developer told me those scripts require EdgeTx 2.8.4 or higher so you may need to upgrade your radio firmware. In my Spektrum to EdgeTX forward programming series in Episode 1 we install much of this software. The TextGen wasn't out yet. In episode 3 towards the end I talk about it and show the new link. The TextGen is now part of the DSM Tools package along with the Forward Programming.

Do you know if you can use these with non spectrum receivers and still use the reverse function?

I do not think so, at least not until someone cracks it. The Spektrum Smart receiver is the communication interface with the ESC. The ESC doesn't have any physical input to trigger reverse, it is sent via the XBus to the ESC through the receiver. Just like all the Forward Programming stuff via EdgeTX, I imagine some smart people will "crack" it if properly motivated. When I have a chance I will see if one of my FrSky SBus receivers will connect to it but I'm not too confident.

@@shanesdiy that's what I thought. It's a shame. Spectrum receivers are so darn expensive it's hardly worth it to buy them. I wish there were more options for reversing ESCs that worked with other brands of receivers. The more time goes on the less I like horizon.

Oddly manufacturers don't seem to advertise it but there are a few that have reverse. Hard to know for sure what to buy though when they don't show it. FMS Sky Trainer 182 and the 1400mm Kingfisher are known to have reverse that works off an available PWM servo channel. They have a 40A Predator ESC and there is a single yellow wire on the servo harness that activates reverse. Confuses many because the Avian also has the yellow wire but it is not for reverse on the Avian.
