They did okay for a while, but eventually I separated them. Rosellas do best in pairs I am discovering.

Isaac Lundgren Artist Composer that’s so cool I had to separate my English budgies away from my Australian budgies because they started fighting but my aviary is way to small for a rosella so when I’m old enough I’ll build one and get an aviary if budgies and rosellas it’s also sad to see that both of the rosellas are decreasing in population

Isaac Lundgren Artist Composer also are they tamed?
@ArtistComposer

The Rosellas in the video are not tame... we did hand-fed a few of the babies, and they were a little tame for a while, but as soon as they weaned they started to become aggressive. One baby did bond with me, and it will still fly to me even as an adult, and loves when I feed it seeds by hand, but it does not like to be held or touched... They are so beautiful to look at, but aren’t really good for tame-type pets, or colony type aviaries (they can get aggressive, and have powerful beaks)... They do better separated on their own in pairs.

Love watching ur videos. thank you for sharing. I'm considering getting a pair of rosella for my walk-in avairy which currently houses cocktails n parakeets. People are telling me not to do it. How are ur birds getting along? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I eventually separated the rosellas from the video into their own pens. They can get quite viscous toward other birds when they want to be. You can’t even put more than one rosella pair into the same aviary... the birds in the video were unique since the male bonded with two separate females, so I could have three in the same aviary. I’ve tried some other combinations that have not been so lucky, they are very sensitive to their territories. I do currently have one solo-female Rosella who is semi-tame... she is in with the cockatiel (and other mixed small bids) aviary, and she doesn’t cause much trouble. I love having her in there... she flies to us and lets us feed her, and she is so beautiful. I monitor her daily for signs of aggression though, in case she needs to be moved.

I was wishing to find you, We build our aviary inspired on yours with the video you did share of it when under construction. I need to ask you: How you did it have your Rosellas living togheter in the same aviary without killing between males in breeding season? Could you pls make a video talking about introducing those pairs into your aviary with even the other species (E. B.). Thank you!

Hello, wonderful to hear about your new aviary! To answer your question about male rosellas being aggressive to each other… in the video, there was only one Rosella male with 2 rosella females. The male bonded with both females so it was able to work out that year. The aviary was big enough to where the other birds didn’t seem to be a bother to the rosellas. I was monitoring closely for signs of aggression, the following year I decided to move some birds around. I currently only have one rosella female in the big aviary now (with mostly cockatiels). The rosella pair have been moved to their own smaller private aviary.

What do you feed rosellas? Is it the same as a cockatiel or a budgie? And how much? I was thinking of getting one and using a pelleted diet. Would Harrison’s be appropriate ?

I feed them a base of a small hook bill mix, which is what the lovebirds go for, and I mix in a bit from a large hook bill mix, which has some pellets, dried fruits, nuts, and other things to chew on. They aren't big fans of any kinds of pellets unfortunately. I haven't found a miracle mix that they devour, they kind of just lightly munch on a little bit of anything I put in there... they love greens, and veggies, and blossoms, and seeds right off the stock, and other things that most birds like. From the seed mixes, the safflower seeds are their favorites.

Is it SAFE to have rosella with budgies in the same aviary??!?!?!? I thought they killed or attacked other birds when they were nesting? And I thought it had to be only one pair per aviary too, because they get territorial when breeding and can fight or kill each other???? If you had no problem with them that is great and I will do the same, as I always wanted some rosellas in my parakeet aviary, but was told they are too aggressive. Thankyou.

Your research is correct. One pair per aviary, and with no other birds is best. I got away with 3 rosellas in this aviary, since the male bonded with the 2 females, and they used 2 separate nesting boxes. I tried to add an extra male at one point, but he was chased relentlessly, and I had to promptly remove him. This aviary was large enough the Rosellas didn’t seem to bother the English budgies at first, but I did worry about their safety later on, so I changed the configuration. This particular aviary now houses cockatiels and the rosellas are housed separately. I do have ONE rosella female bird currently in with the cockatiels, she has odd-couple paired up with a solo male English budgie, and they raised a single cockatiel baby together. I would think this is a highly unusual configuration, and best not to experiment, unless you are able to monitor them very closely, and be able so separate at the first sign of trouble. I think having a huge space makes a few allowances for some trial and error, because there is more space for birds to spread out and not be in each other’s hair so much… Definitely don’t put 2 male rosellas in the same aviary even with 2 females, they will attack each other to the death.

Hi i had a quick question because i now have an aviary myself. Can you multiple pairs of the same bird in one aviary? Will they be comfortable mating and laying eggs? Thanks!
@ArtistComposer
@ArtistComposer 3 жыл бұрын
You'll have to research the specific species of birds and make sure they are okay with "colony breeding"... Lovebirds, Budgies (the common American parakeet), and cockatiels can each be kept in aviaries with multiple pairs of the same type, as they are all colony breeders. I tried to keep multiple pairs of English Budgies in the same aviary for one season, and their eggs did not hatch, although, I also had some cockatiels in the same aviary during that time, and maybe it was all too distracting for them... The English Budgies did great with one pair in a breeding pen, no distractions, they got right down to business and produced beautiful healthy babies.

They did alright together for a while, but I decided to move the rosellas to some smaller more private pens nearby. Rosellas can be aggressive If they feel their nests are threatened, and budgies can be a little nosey of other’s personal space... :)

In this video there was one rosella male and 2 females... I tried to add a second male to the aviary, but the first male would chase him constantly. They have a beautiful musical whistle sound, but, it can be louder than say a cockatiel’s whistle, so if you have neighbors sensitive to early morning sound, you may want to keep them away from the fence line. In summary, they really work best with just one pair of rosellas per pen/ aviary, which can be frustrating, since they are so beautiful, and seems like a waste of space to have only one pair. A small group of them might be able to be kept together, if they were introduced together when they were young, but you’ve got to closely monitor them, and separate them If they become aggressive.
