Aviary grasses

Many common weeds and seeding grasses form part of the diet of wild birds, and it’s not surprising that aviary birds enjoy them too. As well as being excellent treats, fresh seeds and greens are very important for the happiness and wellbeing of breeding birds. So how do you know which ones are safe, and how do you identify them?

One very strange one or a new one for me. A finch that is all white with a red rump. Given that I also see Diamond Firetail in there and various domestic forms of Zebra Finch (including all white variety). I can come up with a guess that this is a hybrid between them. Because I can't imagine where a Zebra Finch gets a red rump from... My context is I am Australian, so familiar with our finches in bush and aviary. Also what is the large black-backed finch with yellow around the neck and on wings? There are some others that I don't know. One multi-coloured bird that doesn't look like a finch at all. Yellow beak, black cap, blue cheeks, orange breast....

The 1 with the red rump is probably a canary bird just next 2 a white zebra finch

The red rumped one is a mutation diamond firetail i believe. Its called the silver mutation.

@@thomasborg6341 Oh yes. I believe you are right, even though I had not thought of that or looked it up previously but other sites show it. It does make sense as a Diamond Firetail that is deficient in melanin, so the black and grey bits are now white, yet the red is unaffected.

All I know is weeds in the wild. I don't know their names. They have tiny seeds. and lots of water inside.

You're probably seeing the Pin-tailed Parrotfinch.

@@cockermum Yes. If you have red cheeks, it is Red-cheeked cordon-bleu. In my aviry there are several pairs of these birds.
