@pete the Irish pilot. I’ve noticed that at airports with long runways, like Heathrow, planes take off smoothly and the engines aren’t as loud. However, at airports with shorter runways, like in Barbados, the engines seem much louder during takeoff. Why do aircraft engines, whether on Airbus or Boeing planes, need to be so loud for takeoff on a shorter runway? Is it related to the runway length and the amount of power required? Thank you for your insight. What’s your opinion on the retirement age for pilots? Some suggest extending it up to 70, especially for experienced pilots who still want to fly. While extending the retirement age could help address pilot shortages and retain valuable experience, others argue that strict age limits are crucial for safety due to potential declines in physical and cognitive abilities. What do you think is the best approach to balancing safety with retaining skilled pilots?

3:40 find out where the black box is, and strap yourself to it. If that's the only bit they expect to get back, you need to be next to it.

@PetetheIrishPilot I wish I could claim credit for it, but the first time I heard it was on an LP of David Gunson's after dinner talk, What Goes Up, May Come Down. You've no doubt heard of it, if not it is a great way to spend 45 minutes on KZbin.

I learnt to fly at 50, ended up with various ratings including instructor, have over 50 types in my log book. Ended up running a flight training establishment. As you say never too late to learn.

Whao Simon, that's fantastic to hear. Having that number of types in your logbook is awesome. You are clearly a high flyer (you knew that was coming!) and must be very proud of having been the boss of a flying training establishment. Thanks for sharing your experience and hope you'll stay on board with what I'm doing on here. Cheers, P🍀

For reference: 10 mins to landing is a Ryanair SOP. It’s used effectively as a prompt for the cabin crew to give the flight deck cabin secure!

As a current student at EGGP (PA28), what tips might you have that helped you get the most out of your hour building, what to do in irregular situations that one may find themselves in while airborne ? Thanks for the great content Pete :-)
@PetetheIrishPilot

Hi Andy, Great to hear you're getting airborne to increase your hours. Whatever you choose to do I'd say the most important thing is to make it fun. Really discipline yourself not to get gash (sloppy, poor technique, lax) and instead focus on consolidating on what you've learnt and been taught. Don't shy away from NAVEXs as they will build your confidence and experience. Eventually you can develop that into a land-away at another airfield. There you can maybe have a bacon sarnie and a cuppa. Finally, what sort of "irregular situations" did you have in mind? Hope that's of help? P🍀

Do you find it any diffrent from military flying to be captain or second in command with not milltary a custom aviation pilots, and have you ever been spooked by old conrads? That decide to do flybys? And is better to dance with the wardrobe then the super model or does the wardrobe get tedious
@PetetheIrishPilot

Gosh Jessica, what a lot to cover! I hope you understand my need for brevity? Flying a RAF fast-jet is incomparable to a long-haul airline passenger jet. Many of my colleagues at Virgin were former military pilots. Flybys never featured in my civilian flying duties. And finally, I'm not sure what you mean regarding wardrobes and super models; sorry. Thanks for getting in touch and hope you stay on board. 🍀

Excellent questions about how late is it to learn how to fly. After four years of active duty in the Marines and another 15 in the “private sector“ literally living overseas, I came home to America and started my training as a “zero time” guy. I was 40 years old. That was back in 2009. Since then? Commercial gigs on the Beech 1900, CRJ and now 737. And still with a long way to go before mandatory retirement. It’s true that training is expensive. But I did spend a lot on some stupid things while on liberty in the Marines and as a Merc. I’ve never regretted this career choice. in part, because in some ways it’s the most boring job I’ve ever had.
