I too have travelled with turkish airlines almost everytime and they are very skilled pilots, I believe this was maybe their last flight for the day and they were just really tired cause I know from a pilot friend even tho everything is mostly autonomous its still tiring work, Im just glad it wasnt anything more than some broken lights and a damaged front wheel

The Turkish Airline pilot should have been made to undergo alcohol/drug tests upon landing in Turkey. There's no way he could not have known that his plane had taken off at the edge of the runway and damaged so many runway lights as well as to his aircraft. No normal pilot does that.

I don’t think it’s alcohol or drugs. I’ve heard of Turkish Airlines pilots sometimes being overworked and because of that sleep deprived.

There are a few topics to add here; - After takeoff clearance, just before the actual takeoff, ATC told them the next frequency, and the Captain instructed the First Officer to input it into the RMP, which distracted both pilots. - They managed to take off, but before landing, they received an ECAM warning indicating that the nose landing gear tires were flat. - They declared a MAYDAY, which alerted IST ground. In the same time, OTP ground noticed that the lights are broken. - Following the incident, the pilots were fired.

I cannot understand how 2 commercial pilots could make such a mistake as lining up with the edge of a runway.

Air Canada. KSFO. Almost landing on several aircraft on a taxiway😳 There have been others too. Sounds like rushing to rolling takeoff from an intersection which within limits is certainly much shorter. Generally even though there are two pilots, one is flying and the other is monitoring the instruments. In the rush to go, the one monitoring is focusing solely on the instruments as he should. The one flying focusing on ‘gettin’ outa Dodge’ believes he is lined up so therefore MUST be lined up. ‘Conformation Bias’ This could have been ohh so much worse!

Training quality of the pilots is also a contributing factor, since we know lot of unprofessional got hired in the past with low level of English and very low level of aviation knowledge, they’re many cases where this company had issues with pilot mistakes and its no coincidence . Luckily they have a modern fleet in order to let the aircraft fly the pilots…..unfortunately.

Would they have known immediately that it was the Turkish Airlines plane that had caused the damage? We're not told how the damage was first noticed, but I assume it wasn't the tower, who would surely have said something if they had. Side on to a distant runway at night, would they have spotted it, even if they weren't absorbed in their screens? No, I'm much, much more concerned with the awareness of the pilots who steered off the centreline as they turned onto the runway, threw the engines into full thrust then bumped down the side of the runway hearing loud bangs as they accelerated to take off, but didn't raise any concern until they encountered a problem steering their nose gear in Istanbul. However, when did they first notice their mistake? Any pilot who makes a significant error that might affect the structural integrity of their aircraft is surely under a duty to acknowledge it as soon as possible, rather than wait until it becomes apparent to others. I hope they have both been suspended pending an investigation.

The pilots, it seems, did not raise any concerns until they had difficulty sterring their plane in Istanbul. However, are we to believe they steered off the centre line as they turned onto the runway, then bumped and bounced down the side of the runway, accompanied by loud bangs, as they accelerated away to takeoff, without noticing thay anything was amiss? That seems quite unlikely. If a commercial pilot of a plane carrying hundreds of passenger makes a significant mistake that potentially affects the structural integrity of his aircraft, should he a) own up to it straightaway, out of concern for the safety of his paasengers, or b) wait until such time as it becomes apparent to some other responsible party, in the hope that he might get away with it? I'm not a pilot myself, but I feel that this question should not be difficult.

They say Oh well ! we need to make it to istanbul by " (input a self censured word) " . They sat down and each get a black cloth attached to to their right eye by the flight attendant ... They look each other, smile and align the plane with the right edge of the runway... end of scene ... Pretty clownish, for sure, but the edge lights are largely sunken, much like those on the runway centre line. I don't know how an aircraft running over could actually destroy them! Lots of hierarchical issues in the Turkish culture and therefore, the younger pilot in the flight deck would've been wary of piping up if indeed the PIC was the PF. If, OTOH, the PIC was PM, he deserves a rebuke and retraining.

I wonder how wide the sideway (bankway) at that airport is. If its 7.5mt wide (as the standard() then TC-LOC's right (main) landing gear was also running not on that concrete surface but on grass... If it is 15mt. than o.k. the right landing gear ran on the bankway. Plus the risk of taking up FODS on No.2 engine!

Expectancy bias is seeing exactly what you expect to see. For whatever reason they saw the centre lights which were actually the edge lights. We’ve all done something similar in our lives.

Hard to believe! How come and why would the pilots filmed the bizarre take-off, bumping on all the side lights! How and why would the plane be videoed from inside and outside, with its tail logo deliberately lit all through the take-off, ascending and landing? Hard to believe, must be verified as to me it seems like an animation.

Indeed it is! It is using the flight sim to accurately represent what ACTUALLY happened... detail taken from the accident report.

I have never heard of this incident as a citizen of Turkey, I will search. I can simply say that where the plane has landed is not Istanbul, it is artificial graphics. So I wonder if the take off graphics are real.

None of the video is real; it is all done using the flight details and accident report to then REPLICATE the exact flight as closely as possible using the simulation of a flight game.
