The Antonov AN-225, the world's longest and heaviest operational aircraft, made a little visit to RAF Brize Norton today! After dropping off a few RAF Pumas, it departed and sort of broke the fence... I don't think the RAF are very happy!
Check out my other video of it arriving at runway 07 here: • THE WORLD'S HEAVIEST P...

The split tail is because it was originally designed to carry the Soviet Buran shuttle on it's back, and they were worried that a single tail would get too much turbulence behind the shuttle. And see the wings sag? That's their normal shape. They bend straight from the weight once it's in the air.

Definitely not the aircraft’s fault. A perimeter fence should be able to stand a departing aircraft’s blast. There are other aircraft have pretty intense jet blast. Full power at brake release is a normal operation for heavily loaded aircraft.
@garymcalea3815
@garymcalea3815 3 жыл бұрын
The fence was built to shear. VC 10 tanker aircraft landing there with a frozen hose trailed could and did remove the approach lights, farmers hedge, chunks of road and the fence. 50-70 foot of 8 inch rubber hose filled with jet fuel with a metal basket at the end travelling at about 120-140 mph makes a mess. That’s also why that area is marked with double yellow lines, traffic lights and used to have signs saying no waiting at any time where they are filming.

Thirdly, it is quite common for the pilots of the AN225 and 124 to carry out derated takeoffs when they aren’t carrying a load and only a small amount of fuel for short sectors. @listerdave1240
@listerdave1240 3 жыл бұрын
The engines are indeed powerful but by no means the most. The four engines on an Airbus A380 actually produce more thrust than the six on the Antonov. The most powerful engine I know of, the GE90-115 used on the Boeing 777 is more than twice as powerful as the Progress D-18 used in the Antonov, so the Antonov would only need three of them to do the same job.

Having been based there for quite a few years, the fence was built that way so it would give when a tanker came in with a hose trailed. There had been a few cases with VC10 coming in with hoses trailed, unable to jettison where the approach lights, hedge and fence got taken out. Hence the reason it is a no parking/ stopping area on that road and there used to be signage saying not to wait / photograph from that area.

@@anglosaxon1622 we had a VC-10 hold off for 20 mins once whilst we had to get the civilian police to move some muppets. Plane came in and ripped everything out where they had been stood, was a chain link fence at the time and that was a mess for about 500 yds down the runway

I would have thought that an RAF base would have more substantial fencing than that, but as other's have commented, I guess there isn't that much choice when the runway is so close to a main road like that. Brilliant video, though. I live roughly 20 miles away from there but couldn't get to come down and see it.
