I didn't know this song was inspired by "Rats in the Walls", and even if it isn't, it still beautifully shows a slow, yet persistent descent into madness until the song in the third act slips off the proverbial edge to the realisation of the lovecraftean reality hidden by the veneer of ignorance. Edit: I forgot to add how the song mirrors how lovecrafean horror should develop, which might have been readable from my comment.
@adam-vm3zj3 жыл бұрын
Rats in the Walls is one of my favorite Lovecraft pieces, it's presented on a low, personal scale yet it's absolutely horrifying. Captures the "universe is a lot bigger than we thought, and the unknown is terrifying" essence of his works, instead of the tentacles + Cthulhu that most lovecraftian stuff seems to be linked.
@jackbelmont43893 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: i read the rats on the walls and, like most lovecraftian stories that i read, i had to search the wiki to see what it was about
@ettinakitten50473 жыл бұрын
I honestly found Rats in the Walls a letdown. After all the buildup, the monsters are basically just morlocks from D&D, which are only really scary if you're empathizing with them, and the narrative doesn't really do that. This song is much better than its inspiration imo.

"The rats in the walls...the darkness behind the door...the ticking of the unseen trap...oh, the fear of that which we cannot investigate...it is the most delicious of all the terrors I have tasted." -Cultist of Shann'Buu, from the World of Soma
@dragonlord19353 жыл бұрын
When we hear this song we immediately imagine a person who hears some otherworldly sound and goes mad as a result. But that's not necessarily true. Here's the funny thing, this song could just as easily be from the perspective of an "intelligent" (relatively speaking) rat living in the walls of a busy household. It seems crazy until you start to change the perspective. The scratching song is quite literally the house cat scratching at some furniture and giving the rat a primal fear of death lying in wait. The "tolls of madness ringing" is just the doorbell or the T.V in the living room, the rat is smart enough to know that those sounds mean *something* but it isn't smart enough to piece it together. The "ancient choir" is the loud voices of the people living in the house, occasionally "calling to me" as the people living in the house make loud noises when it shows itself. All of this stimulation causes the rat to even "dream" about the same nightmares as its tiny, animal mind tries to comprehend something it can't fully process but can't ignore either. Sometimes, since the rat is in the walls/floor of the house it sometimes gets scared awake by the kids at night as they "whisper" whilst sneaking out but since the rat can't comprehend human speech its animal mind thinks of their words as "Unspeakable acts from Ancient Ones". I think that's the beauty of this song, if you want to you can imagine it as some eldritch abomination uncaringly torturing a poor man OR you can imagine it as as some eldritch humans uncaringly torturing a poor rat.
@lexsamreeth87243 жыл бұрын
THAT is the nature of Lovecraftian horror. The idea that there's something immeasurably more intelligent, more powerful, more "real" than you. The yearning to ascend to that level, but being unable to comprehend the level of thought required to approach it. And the idea that, at best, they consider you an amusing wild animal. Because otherwise, they view you as something to be exterminated.
@SkorupaPancNaSkorCzl3 жыл бұрын
The life span of humans and cats is much longer than that of rats. The rat may refer to both species as ancient.
@Omegamatt133 жыл бұрын
The core of lovecrafitian horror (and the genre it spawned) is that there is literally no difference between those two narratives. Something small and fragile faces things it doesn't even know how to think about that are uncaringly cruel because it just doesn't matter. The story is the same.

Doctor let me try to explain from where Im coming from, first I always had a great hearing, really, my friends used to say that if they droped a coin across the street I would hear and come running to pick it... anyway, as a musician and conductor of an entire orchestra it sure came handy for me in my day to day life. The downside of being able to hear a needle fall a mile away is that sleeping can be very hard, and no nights where harder than the ones with a full moon. As you might be aware, the woods outside our city have wolfs in them and on every full moon night they howl and bark, some people even say it is like music.... eh he as a musician, I can say those that believe it wouldnt know music even if I hit them with a violin... Sorry, I got distracted, I havent got much sleep lately. The point is, their howling kept me awake at night, from the time the moon rises to the time it settles beyond the horizon. This has happened since I was born, and no matter how much soundproofing I did, I would still lay awake cursing them. The change and the reason Im here is that a year ago, in a fit of rage or lack of sleep I went to my window and started conducting them like I do with my orchestra, as you are aware, wolfs arent musicians, nor can see an idiot waving a stick right in the middle of a city, but I kept somehow hopping that I could make their howls into music so I could finally sleep with a lullaby. I didnt know what I expected, but for my moves to be answered by the clear note of a bass in the distance wasnt it. I froze for a moment and them pointed in the direction of where the trumpets would be and sure enough, I heard the their sound as clear as the night was dark... I should have stopped but I didnt, I conducted one piece after another, sometimes the notes where clear, other times the rustling of the leaves made the percussion and the howl of the wolves played the woodwind section, I was hypnotized by this orchestra played by the world around me, so much that I didnt notice... I Couldnt have imagined... I started hearing it during the day too but just small parts of the musics I conducted for them, and mostly out of order. Anyway, the moment I waved my arms all the random bits stopped in anticipation, and as I conducted my orchestra of musicians, this one of nature would follow suit, this continued for an entire year, until I noticed a very important thing, whatever they played happened... We practiced "fires of creation" by von Bingen for an entire week before the giant forest fire in Australia, I had just teached them "Stella celi", a piece about the black plague, a day before the very first covid patient was reported. For every music that I played there was a response, big or small depending on how much time they had playing musics with that motive. I broke my baton the day I realized that and almost broke my fingers so I couldnt hold a new one, but couldnt do it, anyway I vowed to never conduct again. Whatever it was, it didnt like it, they started playing the funeral march a month ago and its getting louder every day, so please doctor tell me, please tell me I am crazy, and that scared face you have isnt because you started to hear it too...

The 'madness' associated with the deep one might not be what most expect. It's more along the lines of someone who's seen something from the depths beyond attempting against all natural odds to recreate what they have seen. To understand something beyond their own mind's ability to comprehend. To attempt to enable others to understand something that they themselves can't properly make sense of. It doesn't matter how hard the individual tries-- all others will hear and see from them is a maddening obsession that is far beyond the point of return.

Do you notice the earth worms under the ground you tread? I feed off of the power they emanate. Its changing me slowly, but i quit worrying a long time ago. What will be will be. They have more important things to occupy their time, than humanity and its antics. Except Yog Sothoth of course. Being a construct, it is always available. I love your use of words in your lyrics and the music is just the cherry on top. I can not stress this enough you are highly underrated! I have been devouring everything you've done and I like all that I've heard so far, some more than others of course but I have yet to hear a bad song. I might dare to say you are my favorite musician and lyricist in this day and age. Keep it up because I and so many others will be listening. This song is my favorite and the one that made me go down the rabbit hole of your channel!

I was JUST thinking about this song when I got the notification for this. Would have gotten here a lot sooner if I wasn't busy with something at the time. Has to be one of my favorites of this album, along with Black Roses and Haunting Kind of High.

@@stingerjohnny9951 You think death keeps her from hearing our prayers? Remember, when the Good Hunter fights her Orphan, he cries out to her for aid. And she responds with lightning.

Hey, I love your songs, and I'd like to make a suggestion: I know you made a Sekiro song but maybe one about the Sculptor? You've made ones for Artorias, The Ivory King, and Gael, I think the Sculptor deserves one too. ~~~Spoilers for the Sculptor's Story~~~ The Sculptor of the Dilapidated Temple is the man who saves Sekiro and gives him the shinobi prosthetic, though he's also the creator of the Buddha statues we use. He was once a shinobi named Orangutan, he trained in the Sunken Valley with a friend named Kingfisher, he listened to the somber melody she played on the wore whenever played. At some point he lost her, finding out later in life she was dead by likely the hands of the Guardian Ape. He grew a hatred in his heart and was close to becoming a Shura, only to have his arm cut off by Isshin, an attempt at quelling that hate. Dogen has him test and develop arts for the shinobi prosthetic, leading to him casting the thing off after developing the Living Force technique. He was the one to discover Emma as a little girl and Dogen took her in, while he sat with only her as a visitor in the temple hidden away. He covered the shrine in talismans to keep the fires in his heart from escaping, carving Buddha statues that only ever are wrathful, never serene as he hopes. Finally after helping Sekiro upgrade the prosthetic and along the path to immortal severance, he loses control of the flames and leaves the temple, becoming the Demon of Hatred in the process. He dies at the hands of Sekiro, finally able to rest. Whether or not a song is made for him, I hope anyone who read this can appreciate the story of the Sculptor. He tried to atone for the past, yet the fires never left him fully. Sekijo will always be the best of the hub characters in the Soulsborne series to me. May he rest with Hanbei in peace

Bro, your songs keep fitting my OCs, and it's so accurate sometimes. In the case of this song, I have an insane OC that is stuck hearing the screams of Hell, and no one else can hear it. Then I heard this song.😆
