A lot of people are looking to find it on Avid‘s website. You’re not gonna find it there yet, they have agreements with vendors who sell their products to give them the first chance to sell it to their customers. This link below, will take you to RSPE where you can clearly see that it’s available, you can also see everything else available there. www.rspeaudio.com/avid-pro-tools-studio-perpetual-license

I'm not convinced; there is a detail they left out... I am a perpetual owner as well, and if I go off the support plan my PT stays where it is. That much is true. However if I ever want to update my PT in the future I will need to either buy perpetual all over again or get on the subscription. Because my support plan is slightly cheaper than the subscription, it makes sense to keep paying the support plan (though admittedly I'd rather not). Given that my PT is not very stable (my M1 system is newer and all current) I welcome any updates that improve its reliability. I would confirm that you can get back on the support plan once it's lapsed. I doubt that this is available.

@@Carbonlifemedia Yeah, that's what I suspect too. If you don't pay the $199 EVERY year, then you have to start over. From what I've been seeing, this is really no different from the way it has been. They've had time to update their web site to reflect this "big news" and U-Turn, but I'm not seeing it. I've never considered PT because of their ridiculous pricing model, not to mention their lack of innovation over the last, um, decade, but would consider it if things really change. I guess we'll have to wait a little longer to determine if this is all just more BS from the new owner.

I went back because I love the software and the environment works for ne. Probably because I've used it fir so long. All the best with your decision

Thanks for the video, Barry! Oh... Man! That's cool I guess but it's hard to imagine going back after all this time. I've moved my whole workflow over to Reaper and I'm loving it. Sorry Avid. In the last few years my clients don't even ask me about Pro Tools anymore. Also, my Omni and my 192's are in my slave rack these days. I guess it's nice to know I could go back if there was a reason to down the road. But... Generally I'd say it's WAAAAY too late. It's too bad. I used to love using Pro Tools. What a Bummer.

You will also have to enjoy one of Ableton's best feature. Avid is implementing a session view type feature in protools. That! is a left curve that no one saw coming! Hopefully it's well implemented.

Buying protools upfront is actually what prevented me from every buying it because it was too expensive. The subscription made it possible to at least download it and try it out for a much lower initial cost. :) I'm glad they have both options now!

I still view Avid is an unforgivable company. Once the projects I have started and been working on for months are complete, 100% done, and something I don't need to think about.. I'll be jumping over to Studio One or something else. I am, as of making this comment, a paying customer. 30 dollars a month and they still absolutely REFUSE to take me and other subscribers phone calls when we have the predictable technical problems. No, they expect us to pay a completely separate subscription fee or 30-50 dollars a month for phone support. That is unreal. And no matter how deep into an email chain you get with Avid, they WILL. NOT. CALL. YOU. without you paying them. I'd like to spit at their feet.

Hi, Barry. I have been following you since video #1. I started in Pro Tools later than you, in 2004, and I used it until version 2020.11, stopping because of the subscription model. I have since bought Studio One 6 Professional 6, Cubase Pro 12, Ableton Suite 11 and even Reason 12. I enjoyed using all of them and honestly it was amazing learning them and using them. It was great seeing that other DAWs were just as good - or better in many cases. I ended up recording and publishing my songs with Studio One and Cubase Pro 12, but I still have all the licenses for the other DAWs I bought - and I still have my perpetual license of my beloved Pro Tools 2020.11. I will most likely get up to date with my perpetual license of Pro Tools and see what is new with my old favourite DAW, and I will consider going back to using it for sure. I understand you completely! But one thing I will not do is sell all DAWs I bought - or stop using them completely. I learnt one lesson: our "music eggs" are too precious to belong to ANY one basket (DAW, i.e., company). This mistake I will never do again. From now on, music first, tool second.

I agree here. I got Pro Tools working again after an update. I still feel though that they are not being fully fair. If you use many of the plugins are subscription based - including Heat. I can live without it but I still feel that if you throw money their way you should still be able to keep the package as a whole running. Fair enough after time we pay a bit to upgrade - as you would buying a new version but don’t disable plugins that are included and Heat - which is now part of the DAW. I think Heat should be standard. Silly crap like that hasn’t stopped my interest but makes me cautious. Pro Tools could be leading the way still it’s still got the best editing interface. It’s smooth as well on a Mac and looks slicker than ever.

I’ve been prepping my setup getting ready to move off pro tools and it is a big hassle. I was concerned that I would be forced off perpetual at some point so I was locking in a version to keep access to my work. It looks like I won’t need to worry about it now. One thing that I think would be a big help for people would be a tutorial on how to properly archive stems so that they will be available on any software. Basically a file management system. Anyway, thanks again !

I used Pro Tools perpetual license, let it lapse, had a computer upgrade, traded in the lapse license for the subscription. I just rebought the perpetual license again at $600. I’m a mostly Cubase Pro user but got Pro Tools because I was working with another studio that used it and it was a big pain to go back and forth between apps. Clip Gain is one PT feature that Cubase needs to have. I’ll continue to use both programs.

Totally agree with you, Barry. I also left Pro Tools for exactly the same reason. I had to learn a lot to use Cubase, but that's what I was willing to do: the freedom to decide for YOURSELF what you spend money on! In the meantime, I don't know if I can run my old PT12 on a new Macbook. That's why I'm going to continue with Cubase.

It almost seems that over the years Avid has automatically assumed that everyone using their products are professionals. I am a home based hobbyist guitar player that loves music and always strive for the best setup that I can, starting with Digidesign 002. I have the HD native and HD Thunderbolt hardware along with every iteration of Pro Tools back to the beginning. I know that I have spent close to $20K over the years which is crazy for a non-professional like me but I love guitar playing and music in general that much. For us loyal users and supporters of Avid I hope that they keep us in mind and allow us to upgrade at our own pace. It definitely gets expensive for us old retired noodlers.

I really appreciate what you are saying in this video. You've been using Pro Tools for many years and having switched to Cubase/Nuendo, I'm certain there are things that are different that you've discovered. I'm sure most listeners of music wouldn't be able to hear the difference between the two tools. I first purchased Cubase in 2011 (version 6) and then Pro Tools in 2014 (version 11) because it was, and still is, considered the industry standard. I now have the latest versions of both. I really was considering totally going back to Cubase exclusively and not using Pro Tools any more but, like many others, I really like Pro Tools. I think it's a bit early to see what will ultimately happen with Pro Tools. What will the new ownership of Pro Tools do over the next year or so. Sure, you can leave again if they decide to do something else that's not in the user community's best interest. In the past they haven't kept up with trends in their feature set and their bug resolution isn't exactly what we all would want. My support renewal is up in February and I'll most likely continue with my perpetual version support for another year or so just to see where this is going. Yeah, I agree bringing back the perpetual licensing is a good thing but in the long run what else is going to keep users happy or will the new owners just want a money grab and continue in the ways Avid has done for the past several years. I appreciate your channel and your views!!! Keep the videos coming!!! 😎🎶

I lapsed Pro Tools in 2019 due to years of paying for almost nothing. The subscription was the final straw. I took a look at Studio One and realised everything I would gain by switching. I've naturally always kept an eye on Pro Tools and bit by bit they appear to be competing again. The new Ableton-like Sketchpad looks great to me. I'm also curious about their new instruments, especially Groovecell. Studio One's Impact is fine, yet I prefer an integrated sequencer with my drum plugins. They've got ARA integration with Melodyne too (I use Revoice Pro). I'm very curious...but Studio One generally suits me, therefore, my next project will continue in Studio One.

I've been in ProTools since 1994. Besides being an industry standard, it really doesn't have much go for it today. You have to buy the hardware for it to even start to make sense and that's only if you're doing a lot of live tracking and like the reduced latency.

I couldn’t believe all the things i was missing out on. Time stretching or Quantizing in Protools is an absolute joke compared to compared to logic and ableton this alone saves me 1-3 hours per song I need to finish so that basically alone in the last year has saved me 100 hours. There is nothing Protools could do at this point to get me to go back. So I kinda disagree when you say they are all the same because in my opinion that are wildly different. I’ve had protools since the 90’s but I’ve never liked it. I switched to Cubase in 1999 and I never looked back. I’m in Nashville so I have to have PT but I never work in it unless I have to and mostly to consolidate file and then import then into Cubase. My main reason has always been the comping function for vocals. It’s always been three times faster for me than PT and then Variaudio was a game changer. I can comp and tune a vocal on the fly while cutting vocals with the right artist and they never even feel it or feel like they loose the vibe. Of course there are things in Cubase that I’d like that they don’t have but I can’t see ever going to another DAW. I will say I may need to spend that $200 to get up to date but I’ll hold my nose while I’m doing it. I really appreciate your channel and opinions! Us old guys need to stay together! 🤣

As an artist, that sometimes gets on a recording kick for several months and other times doesn't record at all, perpetual is great. I let my PT subscription lapse in August hoping for a sale to come back around, but in the meantime if I want to open some files I can't. If I had had a perpetual license, even if it was a version that was a few years old, I could at least still occasionally jump in to pull up sessions while waiting for a sale to come back around, or at least jump in to export some tracks/stems to use in a different DAW. I'll be picking up a perpetual license, if for no other reason than to have it during those times when I'm rarely recording, but would like PT to be there for me just in case inspiration hits (or time), without having to sign up for another subscription.

I am sorry but I could never go back to pro tools...I am obsessed with Nuendo...is my baby♥️ Edit: I still wouldn't trust avid... they're extremely shady!

I considered leaving over the last few years, but I decided to stay because of the investment of Avid hardware and it wasn’t possible learning another DAW on the job that has been so busy.

I went away from pro tool because they take too long to give good updates. now I went back to use-pro tools for the same reason. I like the last update they did and because I have the choice to buy the perpetual license.

Ever since I got into recording and mixing, I chose Pro Tools willingly actually. Never used it as a perpetual license but I am genuinely happy that perpetual licenses are back. It’s odd however, these aren’t available for purchase directly from Avid but they’re back which is really important in my opinion to those that use it to this day in that way. I might even buy one for myself in the future, I gotta study my financials before that step but now having this option it’s better for sure. In the first place, I think they should’ve just not removed perpetual altogether and keep things untouched and focus on improving the software which is something that really needs to happen in so many fronts! Great video once again, Barry!

After 15 years, I left the bloodsucking to go to Logic in 2021. I found that I prefer working in Logic. Too late to to back. Yes the editing is finer in PT. But Logic MIDI is so much better than PT. This change is day late / dollar short IMO.

I don’t know. Protools is the most accurate editing platform and the most convenient with grouping and routing out of everything. It’s just so hard to work lightning fast in most daws. For shortcuts. Groups. Multiple layered groups. So many levels to increase efficiency. It also helps to know how deep you can go. Lot of PT hate just comes down to money/script and just not knowing the depth of why it’s so useful.

Your video made me think of a phrase my kid has on a t-shirt: “Welcome to the dark side… we have cookies.” The missing fine print is that you’re not aloud to eat them... it is the dark side after all. 😂

Good thoughts and well said! Thank you. I'm a composer who creates in Logic, but I'm a recording and post production engineer who edits mixes, sound designs and rerecords TV and film in Pro Tools. My biggest woes come from instability of just simplly how Pro Tools is written...but, I've been using them since it was DECK and then Sound Designer and SDII up to now. Pro Tools is a tool and if a better one comes along that serves me better (per your thoughts) then I use that tool, but I haven't been able to completely abandon Pro Tools yet due to TV and Film project compatibility with others. I will tell you though that Resolve it becoming VERY attractive which just means that along with Cubase/Nuendo, Studio One, Logic and a few others, there is some pretty aggressive development happening to provide us all with awesome options. As long as this continues, Pro Tools will have to continue to evolve - or die. Just glad I can keep making music and engineering sound and glad there is more than one way to do that. Thanks again for your thoughts!

That’s subjective to the features that are important to each person. I don’t do much midi, so I don’t require a lot, others may do nothing but extensive MIDI, so they have different needs.

This is great news for me! I have 5 rigs with Ultimate Perpetual that run out this month and to NOT have to pay $2K immediately (399x5) is a relief! I can hang on 2023.9 for as many months as I choose without handcuffs! Good move AVID! This is the way it USED TO BE and SHOULD BE!

I am so with you here. I have been using Pro Tools for over 20 years but not professionally. I don't have the time to learn something new. But I had no interest in paying a monthly fee when these days I can go months without having a chance to use it. I have 2018 perpetual now but I am going to consider getting a perpetual artist license for only $199 to use with newer systems. The pricing is spot on in my opinion.

Even better thing would be they add rent to own so you get perpetual after 2-3 years of subscription payment. And then you can choose to continue or skip few versions...

I'm not sure what info Avid have release regarding licensing but it sounds like perpetual is back and maybe some more. I hope for the best for Avid and its customer base. I've been a relatively light Pro Tools user since 2007, with Pro Tools HD / Ultimate since version 11 if I remember correctly.
