I've attended great jazz concerts where Avishai Cohen played bass. I needed a mysterious name for a woman in the 16th C. mystery I'm writing, set in Sephardi Istanbul. I came across the name Morenika, then found this. Gorgeous, evocative. Now someone sings the song in the story. I'll include mention of finding this KZbin version of the song in the book's research notes.

Directly from wikipedia especially for iconoclastaacrata. Ladino, a Sephardic language also known as Judaeo-Spanish, primarily spoken among Sephardic Jews, or for the written form used in religious texts and translations.

love this song! Avishai Cohen has so beautiful melodies and songs in his albums! the sense of Morenica here is for the skin and not the hair, in spanish we can say for a girl "morena de pelo" (dark haired), or "morena de piel" (dark skinned), in this case it takes his sense with "the sun darkened me" (skin, not hair for sure :)

I'm not sure, but from the little hebrew and spanish, I think it says approximatly: My skin is dark I was born white And the sun darkened me My skin is dark And I'm graceful Dark is full of grace It seems to me a ladino variation on the song of songs, 2 chapter: I'm black and beautiful, daughter of Jerusalem (...) Don't be scornful, the sun burnt me, etc.

Spain never belonged to the Ottoman Empire. This language is spoken by the descendants of the jews expulsed from Spain and Portugal in 1942. This language, called judeospanish not ladino, isn't a mix of spanish and hebrew. It's the medieval spanish with little influences of many other languages (and the influence of hebrew not being bigger than turkish, arabic or french). Any Spaniard can understand a judeospanish speaker with very few problems.
@homesanto7 жыл бұрын

Judeo-Spanish is Ladino, it's the same thing, so is Judezmo, etc. Yes, it's medieval Spanish mainly, (also called Castillian Spanish) but it was mainly spoken by Jews and having a bigger influence of Hebrew than the other languages it is made up of, but yes any Spaniard probably could understand a Ladino speaker, as out of all of the languages that came from Jews mixing with their respective countries, it changed the least from the countries native tongue.

Being really accurate, it is not really singing in spanish as we speak it today. The language is called Ladino and it is spoken by the Sefaradim (jews from what it was the Ottoman Empire which had a big part of Spain) Still today it is spoken by a large community in Israel which has their own radio station etc... Ladino is a mix of spanish and hebrew same as Yiddish is a mix of old German with hebrew.
@homesanto7 жыл бұрын
Spain has never been part of the Ottoman Empire, what a nonsense. Spanish Jews arrived in cities and villages of the Ottoman Empire across the Mediterranean and Europe only after 1492, when jewish communities in Castile and Aragon came to extinction by royal decree.
@alvar5344 жыл бұрын
I can see you know nothing of european history. Spain was during the xvi and xvii the greatest power of the world, with territories in all known continents, and half of europe was under spanish rule. As a matter of fact, it was spain who saved europe from the ottomans, by defeating them in Lepanto and other battles(the defense of Malta for instance, performed mostly by spanish troops). What happened was that the expelled jews scattered across the mediterranean , and brought their old spanish languages with them)
