You're an amazing presenter. You're one of those people who's just naturally interesting. There are people who talk about exciting topics who will bore you to tears, because they don't have "it." You're talking about mattresses and I was engaged the whole time. You could branch out to other areas of media and do really well I bet. You're just a natural. Well well done.

This is a great review. I had bought this for my pre-teen daughter and she loves hers so I considered replacing my 12 year old mattress. I decided to go with the standard King and then added a topper for an additional 3 inches of latex support as I am a side sleeper. This is an obviously expensive mattress, but getting a good night's sleep has to be worth it, especially at my age.

On 17October2018, I just ordered my California King with the pillow top, plus the Natural Wood Bed Frame. This Marine will give a honest review when it all arrives. FYI, when chatting with Avocado Mattress, I could have received a $50.00 discount for being a USMC veteran; However, I waived this discount and asked them to donate the $ 50.00 to any local veterans charity and they agreed. OH YEA !

Great detailed review. Expensive. But I think the quality will be worth the purchase. Green is always more costly, however it is better for us and the environment. I think it will remind me of the old horse hair mattresses that I always slept on as a child and young adult at home. I have been sleeping on pretty hard futons on just a wooden platform. So, my choice is the one without the pillow top. I will try to update after it arrives and I have slept on it. (Lol, the bed frame was harder to find than this mattress, because I wanted a simple wood bed frame that I could add a bookcase headboard to. There is so much crappy furniture out there!)

@goodbed
@goodbed 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Rho -- Thanks for your question (and kind words!). Technically this mattress is one-sided and not meant to be flipped. That said, given the way it's made with the functional tufting and inch of latex on the bottom, we did feel that (unlike with most one-sided mattresses), you could actually sleep on the bottom side in a pinch if you ever wanted or needed to. I hope that's helpful.

I was kind of disappointed that it only had 2 inches worth of natural latex. Isn't it true that for four more inches of latex causes a much better sleep? I'm enjoying your videos thank you
@goodbed
@goodbed 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Carrie -- The standard version of the Avocado has 2" of latex on top plus the additional 1" of latex underneath the coils. This is the version shown in this video, however you can also opt for the pillow-top version, which adds another 2" of latex to the top of the mattress in order to provide more softness and pressure relief. As you can see in the video, we think side sleepers will be better served with the pillow-top version, but we found the standard version of the Avocado very supportive for back and stomach sleeping. You can read more here: www.goodbed.com/reviews/avocado-green-mattress-review/ I hope that's helpful.

On our standard Avocado mattress, we use two seamless layers of Dunlop latex - 2 inches in the comfort layer (D65 / 14-19 ILD, soft) and a 1-inch layer (D65) as a core base component. On the Avocado Mattress with the optional, attached Pillow-Top, we use three seamless layers of Dunlop latex - 2 inches in the Euro-top layer (D65), 2 more inches in the comfort layer (D65), and another 1-inch layer (D65) as a core base component.

@@AvocadoGreenMattress -- Thanks for your comment here. In reading your clarification, I realize that in our reply above it could have been more clear that both we and the original commenter were only talking about the latex on the *top* of the mattress. I just edited our original response to make that more clear.
@ThePdxster
@ThePdxster 4 жыл бұрын
@@goodbed I had assumed that the 1" support layer of latex was directly under the 2" comfort layer, which made sense having looked at the way other hybrid mattresses are constructed (transitional layering). After your review I had to go back to their website and deep dive, and sure enough you are right, it's under the springs. So yeah I'm with Carrie Bishop that it's disappointing to find out it's only 2" of latex on top of the coils, unless of course you spend even more on an already expensive mattress to get the pillow top. Avocado was at the top of my list but I'm going to rethink it. Thanks for the review!

Any sagging issues where the middle dips down making it impossible to sleep on the edges? (You end up rolling to the middle which also makes it difficult to get out of the bed.)
@goodbed
@goodbed 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. Sagging and/or softening is caused by a "weak link" in either the mattress or foundation. As we discussed in the Value section of this video at 18:50, we don't see any weak links in the construction of this mattress, so we would not expect sagging to be an issue with this model. That said, sagging can also be caused by the foundation rather than the mattress itself. Today's mattresses are much heavier than beds 20 years ago. Some can weigh 100 pounds or more (as this one does). This means that the foundation also has to be up to the task, and that means there needs to be support going all the way to the ground under the center as well as on the four corners (at least for queen size and up). You'll sometimes see bed frames advertised as "five legs" or "six legs" -- that means four corners plus the center. Our first question when we hear of a mattress sagging in the middle is "does your foundation have adequate support in the center." On this point, we have an article on foundations and frames that may be useful for you: www.goodbed.com/mattress-foundation/ I hope that's helpful.

@goodbed 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. Sorry for the late reply. We have reviewed a few mattresses that are aimed at larger folks. As for the Avocado, see our written review for some detailed ratings for different sleeper types. While we think this bed would be a great choice for heavier back sleepers, we didn't think it would have adequate pressure relief for side sleepers. A couple of others you might check out: The Helix Plus. We thought this one would be a great choice for heavier back sleepers AND side sleepers, and we found it to have very good pressure relief: www.goodbed.com/reviews/helix-nightfall-mattress-review/ Another bed aimed at larger sleepers is the WinkBed Plus. We thought this one would also be an excellent choice for back and side sleepers in terms of spinal alignment, but we liked the pressure relief of the Helix a bit more. www.goodbed.com/reviews/winkbed-plus-mattress-review/ Hope that helps!

Great review. Thank you! I'm torn between their standard and pillow top. I keep reading how firm the standard one is and worry it will be too hard. Some even say their pillowtop version is firm. I took the online test and it rates this one a 10/10 match, even though I entered medium as my preference. I'm 5'4", 125 lb, back sleeper mainly and sometimes stomach sleeper. Do you think I'll find the standard too firm? I could always go back and add their topper to soften it up I suppose but trying to get it right from the get go. Appreciate your opinion
@goodbed
@goodbed 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dani -- Thanks for your question (and your kind words!). As described in the video, the standard version is pretty firm. This can be great for stomach sleepers, and also can be good for a lot of back sleepers -- particularly if you prefer a firmer feel from a comfort perspective. In your case though, given your weight, the fact that you sleep on your back more than on your stomach, and your preference for a "medium" feel from a softness perspective, my guess is you will be happier with the topper than without. That said, if you are really unsure, I do think your notion of buying the standard version first to try it out makes sense -- as you said, you can always go back and purchase the topper separately. I hope that's helpful.
@Dani-blue
@Dani-blue 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input. I really wish we could see all these great brands you review in a store, but I think I'll try it without and then add the topper if I don't absolutely love it. Plus, it allows for more versatility should my preferences change over the years. So hard to know without being able to try one out first. Thanks again for a super great review, definitely helps narrow down which ones I think I'll like the most.

What are some of the risks with non-organic mattresses? Is it really something worth being concerned over?
@goodbed
@goodbed 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. The thing that most organic mattress shoppers are concerned about is health and safety. Most conventional mattresses use petroleum-based foams like polyurethane or memory foam, which can certainly lead to concerns about off-gassing. Since your breathing passages are so close to your mattress for so many hours each day, people worry about what is being off-gassed, how much, and over what long-term duration. Similarly, many people worry about the use of fire retardant chemicals in conventional mattresses, which are less prevalent today but were very widely used when the FR laws were first passed. That said, for many organic shoppers, their interest goes beyond just personal health and safety, and companies that make organic mattresses tend to excel in those areas as well. In general, this would include factors like the degree of sustainable and/or socially responsible manufacturing practices, what kind of carbon footprint a mattress has, how it might fare in a landfill one day, etc. In terms of whether all of this is worth being concerned about, I'm afraid that's a highly personal decision so I can't answer that for you. One thing I can say is that AFAIK, there are no studies that have definitely proven a causal link between non-organic mattresses and any kind of health problems. That said, just as with food products, some people are willing to pay more for the peace of mind in knowing that a product is more natural or organic -- likewise, some of those people are convinced that eating non-organic food is dangerous, while others have more of a "better safe than sorry" perspective. I hope that's helpful.

Hi there -- Thanks for your question. The pillow top version of this mattress basically just adds another couple inches of organic latex on top of the other internal layers. You can see more detail about that here: www.goodbed.com/o/p/410993/avocado-green-euro-top/avocado/avocado/ If you're asking about the separate topper that Avocado makes (which you can use on top of any mattress), that has a similar construction, consisting of organic latex surrounded by organic wool and wrapped in an organic cotton cover. You can see more detail about that here: www.goodbed.com/o/z/1142/avocado-mattress-topper/ I hope that's helpful.

Can someone give me super fast last minute advice between the Avocado Green Pillowtop King and the Birch Luxe King (no pillow top)? These are the same price of $2900 for me today only, I have to order today, they are both about even on firmness as far as I can tell, the Birch Luxe does not really need a pillowtop as it’s a bit softer. I am a 45 year old male at 275-300 lbs at the moment but I hopefully plan to get that down to 200-225 within a year or so. The Birch also can be had 0% interest for $100 Mo for many many months and Avocado is 0% interest for only 12 months with a bit higher payments of course. I do like the Birch Luxe for the additions it offers and it’s not a money thing for me Vs the normal Birch. I don’t think I will need the pillowtop for the Birch, and I’m not sure I want one sliding around on an adjustable base either.

@@goodbed Good “Bed” advice, thanks so much!! I think Avocado is winning the battle for my bed choice over the Birch Lux, as to me it seems just a bit better built with just a bit more support, and that’s 4” (Avocado + Pilllowtop) of latex vs 2” (Birch) for a better value I think in the Avocado. Now I just have to decide if I want the Avocado pillowtop sewn in or as separate as a topper for flexibility. Of course if I go Birch Lux it would be because of that softer Talalay latex. I really need to try these in person. Unfortunately to do so I have to go to Hoboken NJ for the Avocado and Philadelphia PA for the Birch.

Have you thought of doing an updated review. This is about 3 years old. Review their warranty Customer service and Pillows, sheets and toppers? Please and thank you
@goodbed
@goodbed 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there -- Thanks for your comment. I can certainly understand that it might seem that a 3-year-old review would be in need of an update. However, in this case, the fundamental design and components of this mattress have not been changed since we reviewed this product in 2018. So at a high level, our assessment of this mattress would be exactly the same today as it is in this video. And in that sense, this review is as current as any Avocado mattress review you will find. That said, the one change I am aware of is that the latex in this mattress is now GOLS-certified organic latex. This type of change -- which does not in any way affect the fit, feel, or other features of the mattress -- is something that we do keep up to date in the written version of our review, along with our assessment of Avocado's warranty. You can find all of that here: www.goodbed.com/reviews/avocado-green-mattress-review/ In terms of Avocado's customer service, our written review also contains a link to Avocado's profile on GoodBed.com, where consumers can post their own reviews of their experience with this product. FWIW, as of right now, their customer rating is a 67/100. Bear in mind that unhappy customers are more likely to share their feedback than happy ones, but nonetheless this is rather low relative to other brands. In terms of their accessory products (pillows, sheets, and toppers), we will certainly note your interest in our review of those. Likewise, some other readers have asked us to take a look at the newer models they have released in the last year or so, such as the all-latex model and the organic luxury plush model. Those are on our road map and will be prioritized based on feedback from our readers. I hope that's helpful.

Does this mattress makes a creak sound? On 10:56 minutes
@goodbed
@goodbed 5 жыл бұрын
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. I'm glad you asked this because the creaking sound you were hearing was not coming from the mattress. The thing that can make mattress coils noisy is when metal rubs against metal. However, the coils in this mattress are individually pocketed coils, which means that there is a fabric pocket around each coil. This type of coil design prevents metal from one coil from touching metal from another coil -- ergo, no noise. So, any sound you hear when I bounce or move around on the mattress in the video is coming from the adjustable base we have underneath the mattress, which does have a lot of moving parts where metal can rub against metal. I hope that's helpful.

what do you mean this mattress is not organic if it uses all organic materials?
@goodbed
@goodbed 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Holly -- Thanks for your question. As explained in that part of the video (in the section that starts at 12:45), a mattress can be certified by an independent organization as being "organic" in its entirety. There are two credible organizations that do this -- GOTS and GOLS. At the time we did this review, the Avocado mattress was definitely not certified by either of these organizations as an "organic mattress" in its entirety. For many people, the added comfort you would get from that certification is a nice to have rather than a need to have, but for others it is a meaningful distinction, so that's why we were pointing this out. Since then, Avocado has upped its game a bit on the certification front, so it's possible that this mattress is now a fully certified organic mattress. This certainly seems to be what they are claiming on their website, but of course we take all marketing claims with a big grain of salt. What's confusing is that both GOTS and GOLS also certify specific components of a mattress (eg, the cover of this mattress IS certified to be organic in its entirety by GOTS and the latex IS certified to be organic by GOLS). So, a manufacturer can include these logos on their website merely as proof that some *part* of their mattress is certified organic -- and in most case, they would be more than happy for your to believe that this logo is meant to apply to the entire mattress even when it doesn't. Here is Avocado's GOTS certificate: global-standard.org/find-suppliers-shops-and-inputs/certified-suppliers/database/search_result/27268 I'll let you and our other discerning readers be the judge of what that certificate says. Personally, I find the GOTS certificates to be horribly unclear as to what exactly they are certifying -- and for an organization whose sole purpose is to give consumers confidence in what they are buying, this is a rather unforgivable shortcoming IMHO. If you read the attached PDF, there are no model names on there (each mattress model must be certified separately), and there are no line items that contain the complete contents of a mattress (eg, no mentions of springs, latex, etc.). So, to me, it looks like only certain parts of the mattress were certified (eg, the cover and perhaps the quilt). That said, I have looked at some certificates of other brands that I believe to be fully certified by GOTS and they look the same as this. So, the bottom line is I don't feel confident in my ability to ascertain whether this mattress is in fact certified organic in its entirety by GOTS, or to verify any claim to that effect. And FWIW, that's why we have refrained from making any updates on this front in our review. Regardless of any of this though, I do feel strongly that Avocado has made great efforts to produce a highly natural and organic product at a reasonable price. And over time, they have also made efforts to add more and more credible 3rd party certifications to this effect. IMHO, the blame for the ambiguity regarding the "overall mattress" certification falls entirely with GOTS in this case, not with Avocado. So, lest anyone reading this nuanced answer miss the bigger picture here, there is no doubt or question that Avocado mattresses are very natural, use a ton of organic materials, and go way out of their way to avoid the presence of any harmful chemicals. I'm guessing that may be more info than you wanted or needed, but I hope it's helpful nonetheless.

Consumer Reports has the Avacado Green without the pillow topper ranked higher for side sleepers but you say the opposite. Which is better?
@goodbed
@goodbed 5 жыл бұрын
Hi +Bloodshed -- Thanks for your question. To get right to the answer, I am 100% confident that the assessments of this mattress as they are presented in the video are correct. Mind you, this doesn't mean that a side sleeper couldn't be happy on the standard version. However, there is no question that for the vast majority of side sleepers, the pillow top version will be a better fit. Now to provide a bit more context about the mattress assessments found in Consumer Reports, to the extent you're interested... To start, I want to say that I respect their methods and findings in many product categories, and I do believe that they mean well. Their approach is great for testing products from which most people have very similar requirements and expectations -- like toasters and washing machines. The trouble is that mattresses are not like these products -- a fact that is lost on most consumers. Mattresses are mostly about personal fit -- making them much more like pants than they are like toasters. To their credit, CR has responded to our criticism by attempting to make their mattress recommendations more personal. Unfortunately though, there are still lots of faulty conclusions in their results. Where CR most falls short IMHO is that they lack the requisite expertise about mattresses (who could blame them -- it's one of hundreds of categories they cover) to recognize the difference between test results that are insightfully counter-intuitive vs results that are just wrong and actually highlight the inherent flaws in their methodology. This is similar to about 20 years ago when one of the big financial publications tried to get in the game of ranking business schools. They came up with this whole methodology, and lo and behold, Harvard Business School -- a school that nearly every student, applicant, and professor would choose over nearly any other -- came up...#21 in their rankings. But rather than recognizing this as an obvious failure of their methodology, they went ahead and published this ridiculous result, which also included lots of other top business schools that were similarly mis-ranked. Naturally, this foray into business school rankings turned out to be very short-lived for them. I hope that's helpful.

@@goodbed I am a side sleeper. I have to say that because of sciatic nerve sensitivity, the firmer the mattress the better I sleep and the better I wake up in the morning. I have found pillow-tops and those that offer a lot of support but are softer (like a Tempurpedic) aggravate my nerve discomfort because it conforms to my body too much. Based on most "criteria," my preference is counterintuitive to what is often "recommended." So, I think the individual has to know what "type" of mattress works best for their issues; pressure points, cradling, conforming, firmness, etc.

What you are saying makes perfect sense, so I can certainly see how a mattress with less softness and cushioning depth would be a better option in your case. I've been waiting for this review! This is the highest rated hybrid/innerspring on Consumer Reports. I would love to see you review Brentwood Home's Cedar/Oceano or LuftBeds hybrids. I'm particularly interested in your opinion on either company's warranty. They cover sags/indents over 2". I've stayed clear of them because it's higher than the standard for innerspring/hybrid mattresses, even their mattresses seem really well-built and high quality. Puffy & Nectar covers sags/indents over 1.5", which is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than the warranty standard for a memory foam mattress. It may be like comparing apples to oranges, but I don't know enough to know if Brentwood Home's/Luft's warranty is that bad, or if it's like Novosbed covering sags/indents over 1" instead of .75".

Thanks for your suggestions -- we'll definitely note your interest in our review of those mattresses. Generally, body impression coverage ranges from 1.0" to 2.0" for most innerspring mattresses and 0.75" to 1.0" for most memory foam mattresses. Among the large traditional brands, 1.5" is the industry standard for name-brand innerspring mattresses while 0.75" is the standard for name-brand memory foam mattresses. For hybrid beds like the Avocado, some manufacturers use 1.0" as the minimum sag, but a few state 1.5". While have not yet reviewed either of the two mattresses you mentioned, I will say that IMHO a 2" warranty is nearly worthless. And we can certainly say that 2" is at the deepest end of the spectrum and is deeper than most (if not all) of the online competition we've reviewed. I hope that's helpful.

@@carriebishop8568 I don't remember. I usually check their website for the scores. Here's the Consumer Reports articles on the Avocado website: www.avocadogreenmattress.com/consumer-reports/ Consumer reports info about cars is so precise and thorough, but I have found GoodBed to provide consistently more reliable and comprehensive data. Truth be told, I've been really disappointed in the quality for CR's mattress reviews. They're not all accurate and their firmness ratings are really inconsistent. The height and materials used can be completely off. While I understand firmness is subjective, they rate Saatva's luxury firm and Amerisleep AS3 at a 3 and the Wright W1.27 at a 4 on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being the firmest. I've tried all of these mattresses, and Saatva was a 7-7.5, the AS3 was a 5-5.5, and Wright was a 6. Casper Original 2018 and Avocado without the pillowtop have the highest scores. They seem to favor mattresses which are very firm or appeal to the largest amount of people. It doesn't consider that side sleepers may need something softer, for example. GoodBed takes all of these factors into consideration.

@goodbed 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim -- Thanks for your question. Re: the Botanical Bliss line, I'm afraid we have not yet done an in-depth review of any of these products so I can't speak to their suitability for different sleeper types in nearly as much detail as the many other products we've covered more closely (which does include a number of latex mattress brands). That said, we do prioritize our reviews based on input from our readers, so your interest in our review of these products will certainly be noted. In terms of what you've read about them containing "high-quality organic materials," I would confirm that IMHO latex is certainly one of the highest-quality materials used in mattresses today. That said, AFAIK none of the PlushBeds mattresses are made with "organic" latex. It is true that their top of the line mattresses are made with all-natural latex (like the Avocado mattress shown in this video) -- which means that the latex does come from the sap of a rubber tree. However this is not the same as organic latex -- which means that the latex sap came from organic rubber trees and that the manufacturing process met other sustainability guidelines set by a 3rd party accreditor like GOLS. You can find organic latex in mattresses, but naturally (forgive the pun), it tends to cost more. The last point I'd make is that the misinformation you got in this case is all too typical of what you'll find on most mattress "review" websites. Sadly, the vast majority of such sites (even ones that look credible) are just spammers trying to make a quick buck off unwitting mattress shoppers, so will frame things in whatever way makes you most likely to buy that product. There are so many of these untrustworthy mattress review websites now that we wrote an article to help our readers know how to spot them: www.goodbed.com/pages/untrustworthy-mattress-review-websites/ I hope that's helpful, especially in steering clear of any further misleading information in your research.

Hi +BmoreBirds22 -- Thanks for your question. I do see the mention of GOLS and GOTS on their website, however I'm not able to find any certificates listed under their company or product names in the public Control Union database (which lists both GOLS and GOTS certificates): cucpublications.controlunion.com/certified_companies_and_products.aspx It's worth noting that given the great expense that companies take to achieve these certifications, it's quite common for certified companies to link directly to their certificate from their website. This makes sense of course, since the whole point of having a 3rd-party certification is to provide reassurance to your customers. The certificate shows exactly which products have been certified and what certification they have been given. For example: * Naturepedic: www.naturepedic.com/info/gols * OMI: www.omimattress.com/organic-mattress-certifications/ As I mentioned above, we have not done an in-depth review of the Botanical Bliss mattresses so I can't speak to them in as much detail as I can the many other products that we've covered more closely. However, I can say that it is the norm for other review sites to blindly restate any and all marketing claims made by a company as though they are fact, so I certainly wouldn't rely on any information that they provide. If you'd like to verify that the product you are interested in has really been certified as an "organic mattress" by either GOTS or GOLS (Greenguard is meaningless in this respect), I would simply ask the company to send you a copy of their certification and I'm sure they would be more than happy to provide it. If you're willing, please share your findings with us so I can make sure our readers have the most accurate information. I hope that's helpful.

I am so tired of "reviewers" that blindly accept what the manufacturer claims is inside the mattress. Rip it open and you will find that your description of the contents is inaccurate. There are synthetic materials and adhesives that are undisclosed. They do not have a true independent pocketed coil system, because a non-stretch, non-woven synthetic material is glued to the top of the bed-in-a-box coils. In addition there a multiple layers of undisclosed synthetic materials that are included in the top layers that contribute to the hardness (not firmness) of this mattress. They do not disclose the adhesives either. Some of these may be preferred or innocuous, but Avocado's deceptive advertising and lack of transparency is unappreciated, especially when they advertise complete transparency.

Hi there -- Thanks for very much for your comment. We are always looking to improve the information we provide. Just to clarify, is this meant to be a criticism of Avocado's marketing, a complaint about reviews of their product in general, or is there something specific we said in this review that you think is inaccurate? If the latter, we will certainly verify your statements and update our written review of this product as well as the description of this review. Off-hand, it sounds like you believe there to be some additional details about the construction that we did not mention, such as glue and a layer of synthetic fabric. But if there is something in our review that you did not feel was accurate, please let us know. We can also look into the broader question you raise about the degree to which glues are used at all in this mattress. In the meantime, are you a consumer shopping for a mattress or are you in the industry? If the former, given that you are clearly someone for whom the use natural materials and/or the lack of chemicals is extremely important, we would strongly urge you to look for a mattress that is certified organic in its entirety. There are multiple such options, including in the same price range as the Avocado. The Happsy mattress comes to mind on that front -- you can see our review of that mattress here: www.goodbed.com/reviews/happsy-mattress-review/ I hope that's helpful.

@@goodbed Thanks for the reply. I think there is a little too much reliance on the manufacturer's deceptive advertising. A couple of things in the review that I'd like to correct. You mention in the video that the company is transparent. It may seem that way, as I originally thought too, but their lack of transparency is revealed, when you cut open their mattress and for the following reasons. 1) I personally saw that they used a 2" Talalay of unknown content in their topper, and this talalay was likely included in the mattress that was manufactured at about the same time. This is not as advertised, so the mattress that I received was not certified as advertised. When I inquired about this, they were evasive and were not forthcoming. I found out from other manufacturers that Avocado/Brentwood Home understandably had supply issues due to COVID lock downs and were searching for latex materials. It wasn't until months later that they finally acknowledged that the material was not as advertised, but claimed that it was a manufacturing error. I have some swamp land to sell anyone that believes that. 2) You describe the contents of the mattress, but it's factually incorrect. To truly provide an accurate review, you must cut the mattress open, rather than simply trust the information that the manufacturer provides. Avocado does not disclose and is not transparent, as they claim to be. When one reviewer cut open the mattress they found several layers of undisclosed, synthetic material in their mattress. When I inquired about the content and purpose of these materials, Avocado denied their existence. Again, not transparent and not forthcoming; they denied the obvious. These are important details if one suffers from chemical sensitization and/or allergies and/or if someone simply wants a "clean" mattress; and/or if someone simply prefers the feel of Dunlop and/or etc. A suggestion is that you also consider the effect when a lighter sleeper lies near a heavier sleeper. The undisclosed, non-stretch synthetic layers in this mattress do not allow the support to act independently, rather causes a well to form around the heavier sleeper. Consequently, the lighter sleeper loses support if they are within a foot or more of the heavier sleeper. This is an important characteristic to evaluate for couples. 3) Around 12:30 you mention that it would sleep cool and recite the layers. It does not; It sleeps hot. This is most likely due to the undisclosed, non-stretch, non-woven, non-breathable synthetic materials that they use in the top layers. You can not rely on the manufacturer claims and advertising. 4) Contrary to your review, they DO use adhesives. Adhesive is used to bind one of the non-stretch layers to the coils (clearly used to provide stability, while losing the independent coil behavior). Some of these characteristics would be revealed if you cut the mattress open. In summary, I think you are relying too heavily on manufacturer claims, rather than opening the mattress to see for yourself and experiencing it first hand. Also, the true extent of the hardness (not firmness) is revealed if you actually sleep on it for couple of weeks. This HARDNESS is likely due to the undisclosed, non-stretch, synthetic material. When a company is evasive, non-transparent, and deceptive they lose all credibility. If they are deceptive about these things, then what else are they deceptive about?

@@lwhite2983 Thanks for your helpful clarifying comments. Your over-arching point about cutting the mattress open is well-taken. We generally try to avoid letting the mattresses we review end up in landfills, and as such have avoided cutting open the ones that would be destroyed by doing so, like this one. That said, I can't deny that we would have more certainty about the contents if we were to cut them open, and so that's something will take into consideration in the future. With regards to the inaccuracies you referenced: 1) Respectfully, I would question the charge that it's factually inaccurate to state that Avocado is "transparent." This is clearly an opinion, not a statement of fact. And in my opinion, even taking into account the arguments you've made against them, relative to the vast majority of mattress companies, they are still very much on the transparent side of the spectrum. 2) With regards to the contents of the mattress, as noted above, we can not speak to the veracity of the claim that this mattress contains synthetic fabrics or adhesives. I wish we could, and we will certainly think harder about whether to cut our test mattresses open in the future. I also respect the point you make that the presence of such materials being important to a specific subset of consumers who want or need a mattress that is completely free of chemicals. As I mentioned in my previous reply, we would never steer such a person toward this mattress, since the only way to have assurances in this regard is to purchase a mattress that has been certified as organic in its entirety, which is why we specifically note that this is NOT such a mattress. 3) Regarding the degree of sinkage and conformance for a heavier sleeper, this is actually something that we do evaluate. However, our experience was not consistent with what you described. At 9:27, there is a view of the surface of the mattress that shows our tester (who weighs about 200 lbs) lying next to a bowling ball. We have certainly encountered other mattresses where the effect you described causes the surface of the mattress to be pulled down far from the sleeper's body, and have even had cases where the bowling ball rolls toward the sleeper in that situation. Had that been the case in our testing of this mattress, we certainly would have reported it. If they have added a non-stretch fabric atop the pocketed coils since our test was performed, this could explain the disparity in our experience. 4) I'm not 100% sure what point you are trying to make by distinguishing between hardness and firmness, but I suspect it's because you are using "firm" in the colloquial sense of "having good support." By contrast, when mattress manufacturers use the word "firm," it means "lacking softness," which is how we use it. That said, this verbal confusion around the multiple meanings of the word "firm" is why we use a "softness scale" rather than a "firmness scale". In any case, we agree with your assessment and do call this model a "Firm" on our softness scale. On this 1-9 scale (1 = least soft, 9 = most soft), our softness rating of this mattress translates to a 3, which is meant to convey that relative to most mattresses, it has notably less softness. But this is not a measure of how good the back support is. As we explained in the spinal alignment section of this video, quality of back support depends on your weight, sleep position(s) and body shape, which is why we assess that accordingly, and never with a universal rating. In any case, I do sincerely appreciate your constructive feedback. As I mentioned earlier, in addition to considering your suggestion to cut open more mattresses in the future, we will inquire with Avocado regarding their use of any materials other than the ones we specifically mentioned in our review. We will need to rely on their word for the time being, but as a leading media property in this category, I would not expect them to be reckless with the truth with us. Anything we learn on this front will be updated in our written review. Thank you again.
