I spoke to the owner of this plantation on the phone a few months ago. He told me that a lot of people are trespassing on his property (and taking things) and he absolutely does not tolerate it. He is also justifiably afraid that the more people know about these trees, the more such incidents will occur. I think he would want this video to be removed.

Oh no 2k people from all over the world are going to see an orchard in one of the most expensive countries in the world. I’m sure all of the people who’ve seen this video are going to go start looting. Or maybe all of the people who are going to watch this video would never steal from others orchard because they can understand how it would make them feel, and also don’t have the means to travel to Switzerland to mess with some random dude’s orchard.

@@trueHerpnerd nah youd be suprised about these things. the moment people knew where the largest tree in the world was it got vandalised and the more accessible the info the more vandalism there was :/ so eventually the gov put a large legal exclusion zone around it to stop people even getting near. sad

Wow, that's very impressive. Someone has gone to great effort to get those trees established there! It would be interesting to learn more about what they are growing, are they seedlings, or grafted varieties I wonder. Very fascinating.

Ill soon post about other avocado plantations in the area

Of course that area is still pretty much a 'sub' Mediterranean climate Peter and the lake probably acts like a giant heat radiator in Winter plus the surrounding mountains cut it off from cold weather 😁

@@lyonheart84 yeah, I checked out the hardiness zone map for that area. There are lots of very mild parts in the lower areas, zone 9b even and then of course the mountainous areas are very cold. Of course, it’s much further south than any part of the UK.

Hi, I have a young Food Forest projekt in/above Vira (across the Lago Maggiore from Ascona). My fruit tree collection is young but quite extensive already, the view amazing and we have a free bedroom. I'm here for about another week. If you wanna come by you would be very welcome! Just let me know.

Hi Paul! I want to start a food "forest". I'm also on Lago Maggiore, a little closer to Stresa. Maybe we can connect so I can learn all about what you're growing and how you're sourcing your plants.

Those trees look really good, I think they should fruit well too there if they are the Mexican subgroup and it looks like they mostly are from the foliage and habitus. Some collector around there is supposed to have a mature 'Del Rio' tree, I don't think it is in this Grove but it would be amazing to find it. Some varieties like 'Mexicola' can take down to -8C° without serious damage, those are the ones growing and fruiting in London I believe. 'Del Rio' though is supposed to be even much more hardy, I've heard from a Texan in that region that mature trees survived even below -18C° in Texas winter storms, this variety I think could even be grown in good microclimates in all the milder parts of Germany and in general north of the alps. Someday I want to go looking for it and get some buddwod for grafting. I'd also need to experiment if 'Mexicola' rootstocks work to keep the hardiness, as those are easily available, or if you have to use Del Rio Seedlings, which would ofc be much harder.

the one growing in london is not a mexicola, it is probably a hass seedling. it is very very sheltered many of the claims about them is suspect tho, for example people say -8 but that meant for one night, germany gets -8 for weeks, below 0 during the day
@lyonheart84
@lyonheart84 23 күн бұрын
None of the trees surviving outside in London are of Mexicola parentage. They are all seed grown and are most likely seedlings of Hass as 90% of shop bought avocados here are Hass. Rarely you can buy green skinned avocados fresh here which are most likely to be Fuerte and occasionally Bacon, Ettinger and Carribbean types. The centre of London rarely sees below -2c and is designated zone 9a to 9b

No one likes to eat Avocado pulp. it tastes like cucumber, mixed with lard. Everyone would love to eat only the lard, but that is not how you stay healthy in your 70'😉
