Of course! We don't have anything like this up here as far I know where you can just show up and find an excellent selection. I told one lady about it and she went for 1 tree and ended up buying 3!

@@growyourownavocados I’ll be interesting in hearing how Gwen does for you. My tree is hyper flowing right now and completely exfoliated. It is a nasty habit the tree has with the exfoliating. 3rd year in a row. It leafs out nicely eventually but with no leaves the tree can get damaged by sun and I have to shade cloth it. Tree is about 10 ft tall so it’s getting tough to do. Gary at laguna hills talks about this exfoliating issue also. I think the tree will outgrow it I hope as it matures.

Pinkerton also drops all it's leaves. I removed all the flowers from my young Gwen I put in a recent video and then it started growing leaves. Yes, I learned that lesson well. I had a young Brokaw Gem in a sleeve of woodchips. I used to blame the woodchips but I am convinced my Gem died because I let it produce fruitlets just out of amazement and removed them after a couple of weeks unfortunately that was enough for it to die. On these Gwen, Gem, and Lamb types (& Palo) I remove the flowers. Thanks for the input I will be sure to continue to watch out for this issue until it is taller than me. @SVmathfarmer

@@growyourownavocados good idea taking off flowers

The cool feature for me is Fresno is hot, so I know when I take them back to Brentwood. They will be able to deal with and be somewhat acclimated for my inland heat.

Do you notice any difference in taste between Lamb Hass & regular Hass? I’m in Orange County but I like this video and your others. There’s an awful lot of varieties of avocados out there. What’s your best choices - in order to- for winter avocados, particularly Dec - March ? Also, have heard or know of products or methods to exclude rats, possums and/squirrels from eating fruit? (I saw a squirrel take a 10’ jump into my loquat tree the other day, I presume the same to avocados).
@growyourownavocados5 ай бұрын
Hi Neal! That's quite a question! Lamb tastes similar to Hass but for me the flavor (& season) is different. It is s child of Gwen and I seem to taste the Gwen and the Hass in it if that makes sense. Hass has a stronger flavor and probably has the strongest flavor of all the varieties after it yet Gem and Carmen to me are very close perhaps as much as 95% (for me). Top ones to grow? If not specific to one area of California and assuming people want small trees which tastes closer to Hass I would probably get Pinkerton (or Palo D'Oro which I haven't tasted but is a heavy producer) for Spring, Reed for summer and Lamb for Fall into Winter (Lamb hangs for months). I would also heavily consider Gwen and or Gem (very close to Hass but on a small tree). Sharwil is excellent (so I hear) and can be a Spring variety and a B pollinator but it doesn't seem to be a heavy producer yet one of the best ever like Jan Boyce. So for small Hass like trees in SoCal; Pinkerton (or Palo, Gwen (or Gem), Reed, Lamb and Sharwil for a B and flavor. Except for Sharwil most of these should fruit heavily in SoCal. Up here I would add Jim Bacon as a B and a change of flavor but then again I like variety and Bacon and Mexicola too yet it is not for everyone. If you like Fuerte then Jan Boyce is a good choice because it fruits every year and has a stronger but similar flavor or quality. I appreciate the questions and comments. Thanks for watching!

Looks like the soil these trees are grown in would create root rot. I recommend removing as much soil as possible without damaging the roots then transplanting the tree into some well draining cactus and palm mix soil.

I planted one of them and it looks like the wood chips were just on top.
@growyourownavocados5 ай бұрын
Under the top layer of mulch it seemed to be a potting mix of some type. Good catch and advice on avoiding wood chips. I have not had a problem with some woodchips but I know others who say that they have had this issue so it is always good to share good information. Thanks for the input and for watching. Palm, Cactus and Citrus mix, add pumice and then the rest native is what I use these days when planting. Do you use the same? In pots I use all Palm, Cactus and Citrus and add pumice.

I've got trees from Hernandez I thought the pot mix was good better than the big box stores carry , I thought their trees were tiny but that reflects the lower cost than Lowe's.
@growyourownavocados5 ай бұрын
I agree that there mix is working well. Their trees are young but very healthy. I have had trees in all woodchips from Brokaw but this not the case here. I will take the Hernandez mix over a lot of others any day.@@RareAvoTrees

I will probably graft Carmen and Leavens to my Hass tree. Then graft Gem to my Sharwil. Like you I am out of space and are grafting to my trees.
@raulcasas45485 ай бұрын
Tell them to girdle their tree. Maybe it will force it to flower. 🤷♂️
@growyourownavocados5 ай бұрын
Yes and heavy pruning can cause that. It does have flowers.
