The technology has radically improved, much more sophisticated material being produced, and China is very different than what it was in the 70s. I'm somewhat surprised that you weren't up to date on this sort of thing, it's pretty much common knowledge these days. Of course, that's where their market is, looking for people of an earlier time that they are still living in.

We just attended the ANA Convention. Our family business was founded in 1791 w/gold, silver and gemstones. Our last name is actually Stone. I could not believe the fake items that were being sold, mostly by foreign vendors. We only buy from reputable buyers or items that we know are original. It's heartbreaking when a young collector or very old collector come to us with a fake. Unfortunately, it happens so often. GREAT VIDEO helping out the community.

@@Silverpicker We sell a little on eBay. Most of our business is done with our normal clients (who as most in the stamp & coin business are slowly dying off) and at trade shows. I just got back from a show in South Bend, IN. We also have a lot of referrals. Sadly, this is probably the last generation for the business. My brother's children don't want any part of it and neither my sister nor I have children and have our own careers. I've been working in Asia since 2003 and came home when my brother became very. He's fine & I'm so out of here :). By 1791, my family had been established jewelers for the Polish and French courts. Obviously we didn't have much business in France after 1789. The family moved from Krakow to Warsaw shortly before the 1st partition. The business was basically incorporated (not officially, but as close as they came in the late 1700s in Eastern Europe in 1791 in what our family thought would be our new home. And more partitions came. A friend of the family, Michelle d'Ivry, French but moved to Sweden leaving her husband to be with the court jeweler of Sweden Sutzer. Turns out she couldn't get divorced, became a spy, sponsored (at least) 19 of my family members to Sweden and died TWO months after they arrived! The family was not very successful in Sweden (being Jewish) and moved to friendlier waters- England. Fast forward to 1852, my great grandfather arrived in NYC, opening a currency exchange. After the great fire in Chicago, many found financial opportunities in the rebuilding of the city. My great grandfather and grand father became money lenders while still carrying on trade in coins & bullion and eventually stamps (ugh!). My father owned the coin/paper money department in a large local department store. It's odd to think you could walk into a Nordstrom's and buy Gold Eagles on credit. My father died early. The inventory was split among my brother sister & I (I was 10). When my trust came up, I sold my portion to my brother and moved to England for school. I attended the same Temple my family did back in late 1700s! And here we are. I can't imagine what my father and further ancestors would think about buying and selling coins electronically and getting them across the world in 2 days, or Bitcoin, which I still am trying to figure out. If you're ever in Bambam, Tarlac, Philippines, stop in the war museum. We donated one of every known guerrilla currency known to the museum. Or stop into the The Jewish Association of the Philippines, where we donated one of ever Israeli stamps and some exumonia. Thank you for the great videos and keep em coming!

You might have not noticed it because unless you handle old coin all the time there are things that stick out. Most notability the finish the edges are to perfectly aged, next is the actual face of the coin it is to perfect for the age and appearance (they are trying to sell you a coin that has been in circulation) if it was actually a real coin the polished head should be a give away as well as the tarnish is ONLY on the edges FRONT and BACK, that alone to an avid collector would make me walk away and call the cops for selling fake money I recommend anyone new to buying coins buy from a BBB rated company or at least a commercial company. Also like I do if I am shopping in a place I do not know or trust TAKE EITHER AN ELECTRIC SCALE or a MECHANICAL SCALE you trust. NO REAL COLLECTOR or metal dealer will ever not allow you to weigh the coin. If it is not within a gram or two of the book stated weight or the dealer refuses to let you weigh it RUN DON'T WALK AWAY it is a fake and they know it. Good hunting and have fun

Imagine if the police found you with stacks of £20 notes and you're just like "Nah don't worry buddy, I'm not going to try and spend it." There have been people arrested for fake currency that was OBVIOUSLY fake, like almost comically fake, but because it still says a face value on it and doesn't mention it's a reproduction. When on eBay, always check the description. Often these scammers will pull the ‘you didn’t look at the description!’ defence if you launch a PayPal claim against them.

It depends if these sellers are actually claiming its real, or just relying on the fact that you didnt read the fine print. Whats the case here?
@paganphil1005 жыл бұрын
Brian LaRocco: Some sellers on Ebay advertise coins as being gold or silver but in the fine-print it will often say that they are in fact silver / gold-plated so always read the fine print (not just the headline description) very carefully :-)

I like the video but I was hoping for more reasons explained on why each coin was fake, not just where you bought it. I try to but all my silver from APMEX or someplace similar but I am still frightened at times.

I get fake coins in storage units I buy sometimes and they are usually made out of magnetic steel with what looks like a silver plating. Quickest way to tell if these are fakes is to use a magnet. But I wonder if all of the coins you have there are steel or maybe a silver plated copper coin which would not be magnetic at all. Or even a gold plated lead coin to get a closer weight to gold. I am so curious on your future videos on this subject. And from just looking at them on my screen I would have said the Franklin half dollar and the 2 old looking silver dollars were real.

It would have been really satisfying to see those "coins" get destroyed at the end of the video! :)

Lol, I still need them to make a few more videos about how to determine authenticity. Maybe I'll destroy them after that

I've seen those Morgan's, they do look the part. A lot of them are made out of steel, so they'll fail the magnet test. But they have also used copper base coins which will pass it. If you find a 1919 Walking Liberty that is BU and not graded by the big 2 you should be highly suspicious. Hell even if it IS graded you should be suspicious. Coins like that, always run the serial number. That Franklin was pretty cool too.

I remember from the days before silver was "discontinued" in coins the saying was: "If it looks bad, it is." Now, I guess the saying is: "If it looks too good to be true, it is." I don't buy ANYTHING from China or Asia anyway.

That Ben Franklin with the toning shook me! The rest - I would have known off the bat, although if the Morgan had been a different year, it could have gotten me as well. The rest are pretty horrid fakes, but I've also been doing this since the mid-80's. A new guy, eager to jump in headfirst could very easily get fooled by many of these!
