Mr. Miranda this was a helpful video and most detailers let alone car owners don't know how much clear coat is on a car or if their paint is soft or hard. Thank you for making this video.

@MirandaDetailing

Hi. You could. I would find a good shop. Plus it would be expensive to get it done right. Never should one get a cheap clear coat storage job. It will cause more headaches than anything. But that’s a viable but expensive option.

Hey Phil can you please clarify using a paint depth gauge, I was under the impression that the number on the gauge would be divided into thirds, primer, base coat, clear coat, but what I’m hearing is that half the reading is clear coat? I know this isn’t an exact science and I’m probably over thinking it, great video my friend 👍😁
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 10 ай бұрын
Hi. Well it’s not exactly knowable unless you are there at the plant where they paint the cars and know how they program the painters. But for the past 20 or so years detail experts like Jason Rose and Michael Phillips have done experiments with that and have found it to generally be 1mil for primer, 1 mil for paint, and 2+ mils for clear coat. Clear coat is always put on thicker to allow for wet sanding and dust nid correction after.

Another belief that people have, "If I take off too much clear from Compounding, I will just add another later of coating". Folks, NO coating is as good as your baked on factory clear. If you hear a detailer tell you what I just quoted? RUN away. See alot of this of late. Seems everyone tries to be a detailer until they get sued once. Then career change. haha. Common sense goes a LONG way folks.

The thinnest paint I have ever encountered on a new car was 1.9 mils on the hood of a 2023 Mazda CX5. The owner contacted me prior to purchasing the car and I told him to explicitly tell the dealership not to wash the car or do anything to it prior to delivery. I ceramic coated it with Gyeon Mohs for him and he maintains it with Gyeon products I ordered for him.

Awesome video. I’ve learnt the hard way in the past I do have a depth gauge now and it also helps the customer understand why you don’t want to chase those scratches completely out. Showing a customer how thin paints are now really does help.
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 11 ай бұрын
Me too!! Yes I use the gauge more for proof of the thinness of the paint to show the customer. It gives the Detailer and the customer assurance.

Hi Phil, really Great Video! One quick question; just confirming, you don't have to use a panel prep after wiping off the Uno Advanced, correct? Thanks in advance. You're the best!
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 10 ай бұрын
Hi. Thanks. Nope. No need to use a panel wipe for uno advanced or Rupes Pure. Advanced already has ceramic protection in the formula so a panel wipe would negate that. 😎👍🏼

Good info. As a newbie I’m trying to understand how polishing wouldn’t remove a coating?
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 11 ай бұрын
Hi. Well there are many types of polishing. You could use an aggressive pad and compound and cut heavy. Or you could use a very soft pad and gentle polish and just use that to increase gloss without removing anything. So for most coatings if you use a soft pad and a product dedicated to just cleaning the surface it won’t remove the coating, it will just graze over it.
@jfarm_1311
@jfarm_1311 11 ай бұрын
@@MirandaDetailing interesting. I guess in my mind I always figured any mechanical abrasion would remove the coating
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 11 ай бұрын
soft foam pads and gentle polishes don’t have enough cut or abrasive properties to remove coatings. Plus products like Uno advance, carpro essence plus are formulated to revive coatings, basically chemically cleaning the top surface and reviving the coating. Pretty cool stuff. 👍🏼👍🏼

I know there is a manufacturers table going around by pro detailers like myself and we have some idea of hardness but not thickness. Do you guys have some table or should it be done?
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 11 ай бұрын
Hi. I haven’t heard of that before. Hardness or softness is usually pretty easy to determine. But thickness varies so much, that’s why I trust the gauges when taking measurements on any vehicle that I need to.

According to automotive manufactures the clear coat thickness remaining the same. Is getting thinner the primer and the base coat. Paint thickness gauges cannot tell how much is the clear coat so what the usage on correction ?

Like Jason said. those expensive ones are not accruate with automotive paint systems. the $200-$300 ones are more accurate with automotive paint systems.

Very informative thanks for the video I’m interested in the uno advanced, do you know how big of any area I can apply that in what speed and what pads for that product for non coated car ? Thanks for the video
@MirandaDetailing
@MirandaDetailing 10 ай бұрын
Thanks. It doesn’t really matter how big of an area. You can work the polish for a long time over a 2x2 or 3x3 or larger area. Pads are really up to you and speed also. Do a test spot to see how the paint responds. Then change something if you need to.
