quite the technique of mixing watercolor-like under-painting with dry pastels on top; also the selected mark/strokes of pastel for building the illusion of clusters of leaves is very convincing to the eye. very satisfying end result.

Karen what a great teaching video! I usually watch Utube on my iPad but today I watched this one on my big tv. I was enthralled to see how much detail you put into your underpainting! Makes me want to improve that in my work. It was just all so wonderful and I learned a lot from it, thank you.

Hello Karen, as always I learn so much from your videos--I thank you. I am watching you now in the above video, you are putting the cool yellow on top of the warmer ocher at about 28:14. You said something like "this is a little one" and a few strokes later you said something like you can't use it because it is too small. I have a box of too small to work with pieces of pastels. What do you do with them? I cant bear to throw them away, sometimes I use a bit of the dust to add a punch of color or a glazing over an area...what is to be done with bits? Have a good day!
@KarenMargulis Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I have been using my bits for spices like you do but you can also use them to make new pastels. You crush them and add distilled water to make a paste and form the paste into shapes!

Great painting, as always, Karen! I "love" the look of pastels, but hate painting with them. It's a phobia kind of thing for me with the dust. If there was a way for us to get this effect in oil I would be all over it! Were you able to continue your oil adventure that you started earlier this year? I don't see any further oil conversations on your blog or how your training with Scott Christensen's program went for you. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful paintings and technique!
@KarenMargulis2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I got distracted from my oil adventure and started exploring abstracts! I wish I had time to do it all! I did enjoy the oils and I am working on a studio organization so I can make it easily accessible again!

I saw that you are updating your studio, which will be great! You've earned it!!! Abstracts are fun too. Thanks again for your wonderful artist community support and I am so glad to see you doing well over on Patreon.

Wonderful video Karen. As always I learn so much from you. I am upset to learn Blair workable fixative is no longer available. Can you share the link to the sprayer that you use? And do you use just regular isopropyl alcohol that you can get at the drugstore? Thanks!
@KarenMargulis2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! It is a continuous spray bottle from Amazon and I use regular 70% isopropyl alcohol. Here is the link:www.amazon.com/Sprayer-Continuous-Styling-Cleaning-Misting/dp/B07W5S412S/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1NIOZ47JD2W27&keywords=continuous%2Bspray%2Bbottle&qid=1667076385&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI1LjQ0IiwicXNhIjoiNS4yNiIsInFzcCI6IjUuMDYifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=continuous%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-1-spons&th=1

Thanks for watching! I use the tape only on the corners and I make hinges....one piece on the back with the sticky side facing to you and then tape that piece down. I use artist's tape.

How do u fix your work at the end?

I don't use a final fixative but paintings do need to be framed under glass.
