Had 3 Subaru's, never had a engine problem ever. Had my last impreza 5 years with 160kmiles. Never broke down once. It's how you look after a car. Just because you have a powerful car there is no need to thrash it day. Treat it with respect and it will be fine

I ran my 2015 STI completely stock until 70k. I had an AOS installed. Then around 85k, I had a bigger radiator and cooling mod added. Then at 94k has the car pro tuned. Then added a ETS TMIC around 105k. Then my stupid turbo seals failed and oil leaked into my down pipe and I got rod knock. Now I added a turbo blanket to control heat and car is running fine. You have to really watch oil levels, engine heat and engine RPM with Subaru engines.

Bought the killer B pickup for my BRZ and I definitely recommend. Specifically if you got the Valve spring recall. More then likely there gasket pieces stuck in the old pickup tube.

“Doesn’t matter what it is, you need this to keep your Subaru from blowing up”, I disagree. There’s a significant difference between typical EJs and the newer FA motors. EJs need the cylinder 4 cooling mod, the FAs don’t but they need an AOS for blow by. Killer B oil pickup tube may be good “insurance” for both engines, but only if you’re beating the living shit out of your car, which is the reason it might have the possibility of blowing up in the first place, not because “it’s a Subaru”. Just my input lol.

@remissiveslave 3 жыл бұрын
It's because it's a subaru. Dont kid yourself. The fact these go for upwards of 32k new and the fact these motors (ej) have been in production forever, there's literally no excuse why they require so much shit that without tuners and molders, you'd never suspect and be out of a car before 100k miles. These oversights or planned obsolescence are a joke. Love these channels (not this one in particular) that are disingenuous about subarus. Anyone who isn't looking for good ol' youtube money would tell you the same story. I took good care of my fa20 that I had for 11 months and it's lower end already went at 28k miles. I took the absolute best care of it and drive it properly with proper warming and cooling and not all out all the time. Have fun with it now and then, but this is ridiculous. You can thank the epa fir ever growing unreliability with their loose clearances and light as fuck oil. For some negligible improvement in economy because the bankers who run the world say so.

@@remissiveslave I want to preface my response with saying that I completely agree with your perspective on the EPA ruining the efficiency of engines and inherently causing an increased probability of premature engine failure. Not all vehicle manufacturers are created equal, and I also agree with your point about Subaru fanboys having overzealous perceptions of the platform; retards that claim they “won’t blow up even with abuse” or “headgasket lol” are both going about it the wrong way. It just seems that some people get “lucky” and beat on their car with no issues whatsoever, and then others drive 30 miles and it blows up regardless of how careful they were. I’m sure there are a number of factors contributing to this, like fuel quality, elevation, driving style(especially), etc. so in that sense I’d say that Subaru’s have about the same risk factor for engine failure that other cars do, but admittedly you hear more about Subaru’s doing something stupid and blowing up, and there is comedic value in that so it shouldn’t be entirely discredited. I’ve been fortunate enough to only have one issue in over 50k miles of ownership, and my 2017 Wrx has been much more reliable than my last car (Mini Cooper lol). So that’s just where my perspective lies, and that’s why I’d say it’s a pretty good car.
@sadsquad8124
@sadsquad8124 3 жыл бұрын
@@remissiveslave also sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. I’m one of the retards that launches my car constantly, and at 53k all I have to show for it is a slightly rough second gear engagement(I’m guessing it’s from hitting redline in first and then throwing it into second too fast way too many times to count, but I’m not a mechanic so idk)

@@sadsquad8124 my 2020 had to be rebuilt at 28k miles. I know what abusive driving looks like and how to maintain my vehicles, there's no reasonable way my lower end went at 28k. Under warranty of course. You get these youtubers sell snake oil about modding, well my car would've been bricked for months had I nodded it and guess what, would've been denied the warranty even though in my case had nothing to do with mods. Even though the warranty will cover it, whos to say the technicians are good at fixing cars, it may never be the same again. I had a economy car, 14 Ford focus 5 speed and I treated it like a rally cross car for 230k before trading for the wrx, no engine problems, burned no oil, and only need to fix wiring harness under warranty from shafing and valve cover gasket at 207k miles.

@@sadsquad8124 my Ford did this in 3rd at around 180k. Was annoying at times but was the only real issue resultant of my very aggressive driving. People bash the 2.0 EJ for having less torque, but we never had these problems. My 02 WRX went to 230k before sale. 04 WRX went to 100k, maybe lower miles…but zero motor issues. Problems are with the 2.5 EJ made for US market that has these problems. Americans want bigger displacement and torque. There’s a reason jdm cars only ran the 2.0 EJs.

Bought my 19 STI with 5k miles. Bit the bullet and got an extended warranty to 80k miles. I noticed this big COBB cylindrical thingy installed to the left behind the top mount. Honestly, At the time I didn’t know wtf it was or even what an AOS was😅. Did some intense Google Fu/YouTubing, educated myself and thanked the stars it was done. So far I’m at 23k miles. Daily drive it. I like doing the maintenance myself, etc. I only boost up on the highways because I live in the city. So far no issues. Turbo motors will eat some oil so maybe gotta put in a half quart of 5w30 between oil changes. Depending on my driving habits. My concern is whyTF did Subaru make clutch engagement such a pain in ass 🤣 I’ve got serious hills where I live, man!!! Damn “hill assist” sneaks up and makes me look like an ass😂 I’m always weary of burning out the clutch sooner so I just end up stalling. I know how to shut it off anyway but got used to it turned on 🙄 Sorry went off topic. I love my STI and I wanna get as many miles and years out of it as possible.

Had the AOS, cylinder 4 cooling mod, and drive the car gently as compared to most STi owners (did no launching or track days), stock tune, also did oil changes religiously at 3,000 miles with redline oil... @Vince Calibur Redline is an Ester based oil with additional wear additives like Zinc and Phosphorus (ZDDP). Those are great additives for bearing wear, not great for catalytic converters. It's a very high quality oil, and can even hold up to track days, although I didn't do that with the STi, but have with many other cars in the past. I used 5w-30 weight oil, Redline 5w-30 pretty much has the same properties of a 40 weight oil. I did UOA's regularly and got great results. The last UOA that I got back suddenly had about 14ppm of silver in the report and then the engine was dead very shortly after. Subaru did the repair under warranty, so it was no big deal on that front. The tech who did the work said it was common and he did swaps regularly for bearing failures in the STi. He didn't have data, but said he thinks that the metallurgy in the bearings is simply flawed.
@jcrbama
@jcrbama 3 жыл бұрын
@Vince Calibur I'd be hard pressed to say that clean oil contributes to engine failure in any application, but who knows. I can see it from the perspective that folks that who are more aggressive with oil changes may be doing it because they drive the cars harder. But really, there are too many variables to quantify it all. Subaru as much as admitted that they had issues with bearings. They settled a class action lawsuit that addressed that exact issue and covered '08-'17 models. Mine was an '18. My guess is that mine had the same issues and just happened to be outside of that window but still was probably using the older parts. Apparently '19 & '20 models aren't having the same issues, from what I've read / seen. In the end I think it boils down to like I said in the initial post; EJ's out of the factory are just a crap shoot.

thats a bummer. Ive been building subaru engines for about a decade now, and i have a theory about subaru rod failure. I run a heavier weight oil and then let the engine idle for a while before i drive. I think subaru recommends too light of an oil, in the hopes of improving cold start protection. that comes at the detriment of wear protection at higher temps. I also recommend filling the oil filter before putting it on. helps get oil to the motor faster after a oil change. just a thought.

Subaru is all about the love. If you dont love them unconditionally, you're going to end up hating them lol

@@mistrgiggls2554 love. Are you dull? What's to love about a car you can't get groceries in without the likelihood of some major engine b.s emerging out of nowhere because you so much as didn't fuck the exhaust tip out of LOVE. every person I've ever known with one Ej has had serious engine issues well before 150k miles and these are people who treat their car like their first born. Theres nothing to love about constant paranoia and anxiety over not doing all of the nearly 100 different things perfect to keep these piles of shit running. Mitsubishis are far better.

@@remissiveslave i have friends with blob eyes to 2020 wrx and sti. Some blow up and some dont. Idk why you got an issue with a simple little comment that in no way affected you. If you dont like them then good for you bro? I like evo's but like every car have issues. Did you wake up this morning and have carnation instant bitch or something? You went on to a video about subaru engines to just talk shit like a little bitch and its honestly pretty funny. Made my day lol.

@@mistrgiggls2554 facts have become micro-aggressions in these times, no better case than this. Subaru are frail, flimsy, and faulty piles of shit. That's objective truth btw. They breakdown so easily. People who can afford to spend 20k making them how they should be from factory don't mind b.s'ing everyone just for views.

Seems like Subaru would have done this by now if this was truly the reason the head gaskets go.

Subarus blow up for multiple reasons. Bearing failure due to lack of oil and oil pressure, broken ring lands, and just flat out abuse and lack of maintenance. This mod also helps with people who track their car because the stock pick up is known to not get enough oil when oil is sloshing side to side when going around corners fast.
