I totally relate to this! I study and understand what to avoid but when I'm out in the field, capture the shots, I come back and notice I made the same mistakes I knew to avoid! But this video is great reminder that the whole journey is a learning process.

Really helpful video. Loving your content, really appreciate your taking the time to share your experience. Looking forward to seeing this channel take off, as it deserves to. There's not many documentary makers out there sharing their experience on this platform. As someone trying to figure out things without formal training, I need more of this!

Hi Luc love your videos and your point of view on the industry. Very helpful advice. Also you're in Van which is super cool as well :-) What is the type and/or model number of Hoodman cover you use for your camera viewfinder? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I'm using a Hoodman Aviator HAV6 - amzn.to/3L62APD. It fits pretty well on my SmallHD 502.

The W,M,CU has been embedded into the deepest recesses of my cerebral cortex for years now and thinking about the edit during the shoot is so key. I think the best editors are shooters because they've had to edit a piece with bad coverage and they vow to never let that happen again! It's part of the origin story of every DP.. Lol.

Hi, Great video! Amazing points on writing scripts beforehand. Would love to see a detailed video on how you write a script and plan your shoots. And how much you’re willing to change/adapt to the real situation in the production. Cheers!

I've made that mistake too. I'm sure we all have. I lost a ton of interviews from Haiti because of a Tascam recorder and not having formatted the card the right way or something. I had a boom into camera for a backup and luckily kept the main interview intact.

Thank you very much for your videos (especially this one)! Today I came across to your channel, and found it very enlightening (just subscribed). Is there any video on documentary script writing? I mean, you touched the topic in this video which I found very helpful, but is there any detailed video here? Actually I just started (at my 40s) as a short documentary filmmaker (not as a professional) and want to know more about script writing from your experience. Thanks a lot again!

Welcome! There is definitely a script writing video on the works, but will probably be a while still…I’m on a shoot and backed up for KZbin production. I’m hoping to publish in august, so stay tuned!

Hi luc i love the way you break it all down in lay man terms. I am really learning a lot of things through your insights and experiences shared in your videos. I am going to be shooting a documentary on domestic violence on women post marriage with just my smartphone. I have a question WHAT RESOLUTION DO I SHOOT MY DOCUMENTARY SO THAT IT WHOULD COME OUT PERFECT EVEN FOR BIGGER SCREENS⁉️ it would be really great if you can help me out with it and would appreciate it if you like to any ideas or share any sort of insights how to go ahead about this.

I'd go 4k if you can, always safer for the future. 1080 is also fine and looks great, especially if you're just starting out and don't plan on it going to Netlflix etc
