There will be more and more good guys going to places like Thailand to try to escape the fall of the West. However the odds of a cohesion interesting or dynamic enough to have ever made a difference in the West or taken hold in the mainstream there (and let's be honest, that's all that would finally satisfy us) is vanishingly small. There's a part of ourselves that we have to forget or ignore to make the good guy gatherings more than a suicide watch. The best we can do, really, is to go it alone with Nietzsche and see what happens.

First came to Thailand with US Army in 1970 and stayed five years, married a local and had two children. Fast forward to 2021, finishing up a 7 month visit in NE Thailand in a quiet village with chickens and ox as neighbors. Had two beautiful and loving Thai women, one for 30 years, another for 11 years. Lord took both of them before their time. Last 14 years have been making yearly visits for months at a time. At 72 years old, Thailand is still for me; Family, Friends, Food, and Fun!!! I stay away from distractors!!!! Love watching your videos. Keep it up!!!

Hi Forrest. Thank you for your insight and sharing your travels! I think the explanation for toxic expats is pretty simple. People take their misery with them wherever they go. Thailand is no exception. I lived as an expat in Mexico for 20 years and I found the same type of people, those that wouldn't learn the language or culture, and complained a lot. The worst is that many people move to a place because they like the idea of it, rustic, exotic, or whatever, and then immediately try to change everything to be more like the places that they are getting away from! I think this is just an endemic characteristic of human nature. I would like to add that I am 66, can't afford to retire in the US, and will be moving to Thailand in a few years, so I fit the profile (superficially) of the people you are talking about. I will also add that I am married to a wonderful woman from Thailand, and have never been happier. My wife is a treasure and I swear that they so not make humans better than her. She is from a village in the north east near Laos and has traditional Buddhist values, which I treasure. I am saying all of this because it is not quite accurate to paint us all with the same brush. But I also appreciate your advice! Thank you. Keep up the great insight and good things that you do.

I am a youthful 76 year old and agree that there are a boatload of toxic expats here in LoS. What I don’t agree with is classifying the by age, ethnicity, or nationality. I guess Forest made those distinctions because the people he happended to encounter fit into those particular boxes. However, I have run into these kind of folks who represent all age groups and nationalities. There are just as many young a_ _ho_ _s as there are older ones.

I noticed the same thing when I moved to Thailand to retire. I love Thailand and was shocked to hear people complaining. At first I tried to engage in conversation and show them that they should appreciate how good it is here but eventually I learned it’s better to avoid these miserable toxic people. Your theory is probably correct. Also, some people just love to complain. Thanks for highlighting that their behavior is ridiculous.

Maybe this also sheds some light on this phenomenon. I’ve found there are two kinds of expats living in Thailand: 1) Those who move to Thailand and become integrated (as much as possible) into the country, the people, and have a motivation and enthusiasm to ‘experience’ Thailand. And 2) Those who move to Thailand, and segregate themselves amongst other expats and exist within a bubble, not venturing out or exhibiting any curiosity about their adopted home. The latter by definition means their world is going to be SMALL and limited.

What I really believe happened for the last 20 years is that Thai Immigration and government started to close loop holes for those on retirement visas, demanding proof of income and savings to qualify to remain in Thailand. This, in addition to require health insurance while here increased the expense of staying permanently here in Thailand. Yes, your retirement money can go further here in Thailand but you also need to adjust your life style and live within your means.

Agree 100%. I've been an American expat here in the Philippines for the last 16+ years. A LOT of expats here fit the profile you outlined to a tee: older, jaded, and a veritable pit of melancholy designed to sap the life & light out of all they touch. Your advice is spot-on... avoid them at all costs. These are the proverbial know-it-alls and vehemently look down on the local culture. Whether it's Thailand or the Philippines, they're all the same.

I think it’s a mixture of boredom and also resentment. They come to Thailand and after the novelty of it is over, they discover that there isn’t a lot to do when you are living on a budget. The resentment particularly toward digital nomads and backpackers is because they think that they have been robbed. They think, I worked hard to afford to retire in Thailand, there was no WhatsApp, or digital marketing, email may have been around 30 years ago but was not widely used. So the concept of working remotely wasn’t an option for them. They resent that people can enjoy the advantages of living in Thailand, while also earning a western salary.

Krabi is cool! - Head down to it and do the island tours. You can see the same islands (about 10) if you stayed in Phuket but it cheaper to stay in Krabi (Ao Nang Beach). Also, you can get to Railay Beach by hiking over the mountain or taking a long tail boat. You should go while the tourist are not around - once in a life time experience because of no tourist. It sucks when all the tourist pack into this area. So, I hope you get a change to check it out. You can fly from BKK to Krabi then take a mini van to Krabi - Ao Nang Beach. Ao Nang Beach is only 15 minutes south of Krabi City. A lot of places to stay and a lot cheaper then staying in Phuket to do island hoping. Enjoy!

Another set you left out is the toxic youtubers. Watching them trash each other is kinda funny. I didn’t work hard 20 years to retire young to surround myself with any of that! So many better things to do in Thailand than to sit at some hole in the wall and shit talk everyone and everything. I think a lot of it comes from not making enough money as you said. Things are cheaper here yes, but I think a lot of people embellish that. Maybe they feel duped? Idk or care. Keep up the good work man. 🙏🏼

Forrest you seem like a decent person smart enough, obviously intelligent and well Educated. I just would like to know why so much angst about the older generation that reside in Thailand. Please understand there is many reasons people live and enjoy Thailand. Just live and let live, like you said stay positive and enjoy yourself. Just an opinion. Maybe right . But if you do keep at this subject it does get a little boring seeya mate.

Great topic. I’ve spent all year in Thailand, and have come across a few of these guys, it’s funny that the majority seem to be hiding behind a computer. I was trolled by one whilst documenting my ASQ process earlier this year. He seemed intent on making me feel crap, and had a few nice words to say about my girlfriend also. My theory has always been that they are 1. Bitter, because they perhaps have a portfolio of failings, a number of divorces behind them, the clock is ticking, and are now with a woman who only wants the dollar! Or 2. They are territorial, they live in Thailand, they’re part of the furniture now and they don’t want no tourists coming in and stealing the limelight. Either way, I agree to stay away from them, but I think it’s a tricky one when you’re asking for Thailand advice online.

The younger once can even be more territorial, especial the ones that are not good enough for porn. As a general rule avoid all average looking white guys, especially the Brits. Avoid all Americans, except for the ones that look good enough for a Calvin Klein ad. Seriously, avoid Insecure people, who want to prove something. Dont analyze too much, unless you are cultural anthropologist with a career in academia or the national geographics.

You could very well be right. Your perspective on this matter may also possibly be magnified because you are Asian with a Western perspective and it could be probably that when you went to their land, you adjusted and you cannot possibly understand why people bicker. If they don't like it, there are many airports in Thailand. I feel the same. Because coming to our region and marginalising us, is not right. I know what it feels like to be marginalised. It hurts.

"Avoid the toxic-scumbags expats" (then he gets in a shop to buy weed stuff to get stoned at home). Very coherent and inspiring.

don't forget about his Elon Musk -type of investments lol.... He comes across as superior and narcissistic, but I think it's just a facade.

I have been visiting Thailand since 2005 and after my first couple visits I decided to research retiring in Thailand. Food, people and weather is great. What you said about Toxic people, very true. I walk by beer bars and the like and that is all you see. It is what is going on in the United States, all the toxic people are speaking and acting out. Trump gave them permission to act and he's a lousy example to follow. I consider Pattaya a bit low level when it comes to the kind of tourist that comes to Thailand. I have only been there 3 times and I can leave it. I like you prefer the low keyed Hua Hin. Keep it up, be blunt and straightforward
