I brought a puppy home. 5 day's late the trajectory of both of our lives has changed with one sentance, "you need to get put on the liver transplant list". "Wait, what?!" Was all I could say. My spoiled boy Blue is now to be a service dog. He is a black lab and I think he will be an excellent support dog. Training him will keep me from dwelling on things that I can do nothing about. The only thing I got is patience and love. The rest I'm hoping you will help me out with.

I work in special ed. The teacher I worked for who did the most to help me learn how to manage special needs children, he told me that I should never ever ever under any circumstances punish a child. That I should only reward good behaviors. That means, when my client is doing something bad, all I can really do is ask her to do something good. I should not say cut it out! Stop that! Unless she is hurting somebody. What I need to do is say, why don’t you eat something that is good for you? Let me make you some bread and butter! And this is amazingly effective, it makes the students attitude about me be a lot better, because I’m not there to make life miserable for them. Now, the teacher is allowed to punish if necessary, but not the teacher’s aide. That way, it’s a behavior management tool that isn’t overused.

I can't recommend McCANN dogs enough, we have a 2 year old Golden Retriever and when we got her as a pup we followed along with the training guides on this channel and we have the BEST behaved dog imaginable. She always gets compliments on her behaviour, using the leash as a method for teaching them to make good choices is an imperative but oft overlooked technique imo.

I was so unsure how to train a dog that is so small so i went to youtube for advice and luckily i found your videos right away. after just one day she loves her crate, i feel very at ease that she is safe whenever i have to go to the toilet or cook or clean or something. I have 1 week off work to focus on her, and then i slowly want to introduce her to being by herself for 3 to 4 hours (whenever i have a lecture or going to gym). She is so confident and sweet and i intend to nurture this side on her. Thank you for making these videos! I was nervous before but watching your videos is giving me a lot of confidence :)

I had a puppy years ago I got from the humane society at just seven weeks. She had been taken from the mother too early and was already insecure and easily scared. The second day I had her I was making toast and the sound when the toast popped up scared her so bad she NEVER FORGOT IT. She lived thirteen pretty good years but up until the day she died whenever I got bread out she would run and hide. We tried early on to reassure her .... stop her from becoming upset ... nothing helped. Its SO IMPORTANT to be aware and proactive early on. I always wish I'd have somehow known to prepare her for that sound. Something, anything to prevent her from being upset. Live and learn!
@spatrk6634 Жыл бұрын
mistake people make when dog is afraid of something is by petting the dog while he is afraid, telling him in nice voice that everything is fine. dog doesnt comprehend that sort of reassurance. to dog that means that you want that behavior from him in that situation. but toast popping up scares me sometimes as well, especially when i forget i put them on

We just brought home two littermate Labs (male and female) 8 weeks old. We are on week two (9 weeks old) and have been using a lot of your tips for crate training and basic training. We are running into issues with both of them constantly fighting, which has gone beyond the normal play biting and roughhousing. They can get really aggressive and dominant with each other. The other day, one of them bit the other's ear where it caused bleeding. We had to go as far as keeping them in separate play pens to avoid them injuring each other since now it's so constant. Is this a mistake, or should we be doing something different?

My question is, you are constantly giving a little treat as your teaching and training. Please let me know what you are giving the dog. Do I buy a special treat? My new 8 week old Rottweiler puppy came to join our house last Sunday. My elderly Staffy boy passed away last July, leaving a gaping hole for me. My 9.5 year old Staffy girl has been on her own with three cats since and although she is fond of them all, it isn't the same as having another dog. And I think that once you have a multi-dog household, it seems wrong to only have one. I would normally have adopted a dog (as my last two have been), but I didn't want to risk a dog coming in and there being issues with the cats, so I got him from an absolutely lovely breeder with whom I am keeping in contact as we clicked as people. You don't get that often! He's gorgeous, and thanks to your awesome videos, we've accomplished so much in a week. He knows sit, down, watch, touch, come, his name (obviously) and more. He gets cuddles from me, and one of my cats has taken a particular shine to him, and she is the one who is probably the least social. As puppies go, he's pretty calm (most of the time) and I think that is helping re his relationship with the cats. His breeder fed the puppies with kibble and raw puppy mince, which was great for me, as all my dogs have been raw fed. After a couple of days he started refusing to eat the kibble so we have almost completely phased it out. My other dog LOVES having another dog in the house again. She is a very playful dog, so is loving having another dog to play tug etc with. She's really good at not pulling too hard, what with him being only a puppy. My vet said that she's one of the most energetic 9.5 year old dogs she's met and that she would probably continue to be so (which I agree with). When we went to the vet on Monday he weighed in at 8 kilos, and she is 19 kilos, so it won't be long before he is heavier, and taller, than her. Every morning I get him out of his crate he seems to have grown taller!! So, many thanks for this, and all, your videos. They are so helpful and I feel less guilty about putting him in his crate for naps during the day so that I can get things done. Using his food to train him is a bit of a messy business, but it became clear from the second day that the kibble wasn't nearly interesting/tasty enough to motivate him to do things. The opposite is true with the puppy mince - he can't get enough of it, and is incredibly focused during our training sessions. I end up using about 2/3rds of his meal for training, sometimes more, and he seems to be enjoying it. Personally it's a bit icky, but whatever works the best to be honest. I'm trying really hard to set him up for success each training session. I mix it up, and he is catching on really fast. My plan is for us to work really hard together with the basic training, and then things that are more challenging, but I am very conscious not to slack, because he's going to be a big dog. It can be hard enough having a Staffy that changes peoples' perceptions of the breed, and having a Rottweiler is going to be the same. So, it's lots of training so that his reactions are hardwired and he does what is asked of him every time without fail. It's not all training though. There is plenty of play. He was a bit food possessive when he got here - sharing with 5 brothers and a sister can make things competitive when it comes to the food front - but now that I'm feeding him most of his dinner from my hands, that has stopped. I think having another, older dog to teach him boundaries, and three cats as a distraction, is going to help make him a 'bomb proof' dog.

I found that the pup is letting me know when he has to go outside and so far no accidents in my house. I'm starting the crate training now and hope it goes as easy but am finding out quickly that he throws a fit if he's not with me 24/7. Hopefully he will learn to adapt and not keep howling when he's in the crate. I've tried the treats and food but so far he's not having it.

I'd never heard of one either, but the last time I had a puppy was 2001! Things have really changed in dog/puppy training since then. I already had a long line because my (now sadly passed) rescue Staffy boy had absolutely ZERO recall when I got him, so I simply cut it shorter and repurposed it. It has been really good because my new puppy can't go too far from me and get up to mischief before I can stop him. We have still had a few accidents in the house, but I'm learning his cues. The probably is the teenager isn't really aware of the cues that he needs to go outside because she's too distracted by her phone etc., but we're getting there, and I was washing up yesterday, and he actually went to the back door for a moment. I didn't pick up on the cue cos he had a toy in his mouth and was playing. But, I found out to my cost that he had actually been asking to go out as the next thing I knew, I had a little puddle on the floor. We're getting there though, and the house line has definitely helped.

I feel like not having many accidents after a week is quite a big ask. Especially for a small dog. I have an Italian greyhound puppy now and we live in a cold country. He despises the cold and dark and even when I take him out when I know he needs to go, he doesn't want to do anything outside. And whenever we come inside, he pees somewhere. I'm pretty sure he won't be fully house trained before late spring.

I absolutely love the trainings. My two month old puppy would have nothing to do with the crate. I gave up and bought a playpen. He would cry for hours and hours in the crate. Any other suggestions for people who work and away from the their puppy 3-days for 8 hrs each day a week? I feel a lot of the trainings may be better for those that can spend all-day with their puppy.

Can we do a how to care for an infant all the way up to 8 weeks? I've never had one so young, but mom stopped producing and my friend has already lost a lot of the puppies so I need as much advice as possible so I can give this little guy the most efficient care he deserves.

My puppy has been home about 2 weeks now. (Australian Shepard/ husky mix) He actually looks a lot like 5 Alive just more white on Bear.. He's smart and picks up things pretty well. I've learned a bunch from your videos and hope I'm keeping up with the training. He isn't really food motivated so I have struggled somewhat with training that way. Even if he's been in the crate for a long time after he comes out he's not super motivated by the food. Distraction may be a big part of that I suppose. He's doing the puppy biting (playing) which can be a little rough. He's responding pretty well overall. As all puppies he has his times....as a bonus he's slept through the night every night I believe... He's arms length away though and can see me so I think that really helps. Thanks for the great resource. If you were closer I'd be scheduling some classes. I love your methods and video. Thanks for sharing with us.

You can't train a dog that has a full belly. Train on an empty stomach
@ADVJason2 жыл бұрын
@@8675-__ Thing have changed a good bit since I posted this obviously. He's more treat oriented now so training isn't bad. I think the deal before was he just needed something more stimulating (smelled better) to get him paying attention. He's doing pretty good.

How to leash train a puppy while they are still not fully vaccinated?? Scared of my girl getting Parvo, but we've been working on stuff in the yard, luckily I have a large yard. She looks a lot like 5 alive, same markings, she was a rescue puppy.

I am not sure where the crate should be. I like that you said you can move it. Some videos show the crate near anexterior exit so they can easily go in and out but I’ve also heard the crate should be by your bed ( which in our home would be upstairs and a distance from an exterior door). What would you recommend doing? Thank you!!

I have a question? We use treats to reinforce positive behavior but I see we should use the treats for housetraining, crate training, skill holding etc and basically my question is how many treats should they have a day is there a too much rule? Just a thought enjoying the video and we just got our puppy yesterday so we will be working on all of these to help train our puppy I'm enjoying these videos and learning how to be a God parent ro my new furbaby

Hello! Your videos are SO HELPFUL. Our pup has been with us for less than a week and she is learning so fast. Thank you for your guidance! I am curious what kind of toy/treat 5 has while you are talking about the house line? We are trying to find good toys for her to chew on and that looked like a good one. Thank you!
@PedroBenolielBonito2 жыл бұрын
I'm having issues with the 'not chewing on his lead' thing. He sometimes goes for his bone or chew toy, but oftentimes, he will ignore it and either go back to it, or start chewing something else inappropriate, like his blanket, or random weeds if we're out in the back patio. I wish I knew what to do in those times.
