Years ago my workplace held a seminar discussing what to wear on flights when traveling for business. I recall only 2 things: 1) always wear shoes (not sandals) and have them on during takeoff and landing in case of emergency, and 2) wear natural fabrics like cotton or linen in case of fire. Polyester and other synthetics will melt into your skin in the event of fire. It was a real downer of a class!

Several years ago my daughter was flying on a buddy pass from her older brother. They stopped her at check-in and asked her to lose the flip flops and t-shirt. Since her bag was already checked she had to buy shoes and blouse. The airline explained that anyone traveling with a buddy pass had to meet a different dress standard. Who knew.

The only thing I would add is on shoes: leather shoes are restrictive if your feet swell. Microfiber shoes or mesh sneakers work better.

As someone who flies a lot of super long haul (between Europe and Australia) I agree with these tips. Dark colours are the best and I always have a change of clothes in my carry on. Don’t forget compression socks as they really help with swelling.

When I saw the woman in the business attire (suit and heels), I was reminded of my years of business travel! I was always flying in a suit and heels. It definitely wasn't comfortable, and some of it was before rolling luggage became a thing...but I smiled because it was fun thinking back. I haven't flown in years, but I think your tips work for any kind of travel. I drive a lot when traveling, and these tips are perfect for that too. But thank you for the trip down Memory Lane!!

I recently was on a nine hour flight. In front of me sat a young man wearing a thick hoodie. One hour into the flight he took his hoodie off...and the stink...! When my cousin died, her daughter wore her tennis bracelet on the flight home. She fell asleep (due to all the grief of losing her mom). When the attendent woke her up after the plane had landed, she discovered that it had been stolen. Probably by the person sitting next to her who had engaged her in conversation about it. People can suck. Also, regarding scents...don't wear perfume. You may love it but the person next to you may have asthma and like you said, it's near impossible to swap seats.

Heels during an emergency escape on a plane? Bad idea as the flight attendants will ask you to stop to remove the shoes as the heels can puncture the slide.

I wear the thickest clothes and bulkiest/heaviest footwear on board to make more room in luggage. I don’t mind wearing jeans because I only bring one pair which is usually the heaviest so I’d wear it.

This is great info, especially for those that do not travel often. I haven't had an issue with the scanner, but now have a hip replacement. The surgeon didn't give me a card to present to security. He told me to simply tell security that I have the artificial joint and that they will use the wand to scan me. I always wear my Duluth Trading Co Noga pants. They are so comfortable. I wear a basic V neck Tshirt or top and keep a light sweatshirt in the bottom of my personal item. I'm pretty sure the wire in my underwire bras are plastic from VS. They have never set off the scanner. I always wear sneakers and now have the slip ins from Sketchers. They are perfect for travel.

Especiallly (but not only) people over 50: swelling is uncomfortable, but the real concern of wearing tight clothes on a long flight is deep venous thrombosis. When blood is allowed to pool for a long time in an extremity, there's an increased chance of clotting. And that's a potentially serious medical problem.

I agree. I usually wear loose leggings, slip on shoes and an oversized top. What jewelry I take I put in a bag in my purse and never that much. I never wear sleeveless tops because sometimes I get cold. Traveling during the winter, I will wear a hoodie and pack my coat.

Yes to all of these tips! My preference is for smart, coordinating active wear, usually black. I also like to wear sneakers with socks going through security to avoid barefoot moments. No matter what, I always get taken aside for a body scan, wand and a pat-down due to my titanium hip! They were very rough with me once in Florida, didn’t believe my hip would cause so much beeping, so I pulled out a photo of my X-ray and they could see it was a large implant (it’s official, I’m big boned!). Worst mistake was when I flew overnight to Scotland in Spanx and jeans. It was so bad and also so funny that I wrote a blog post called “Spanx On A Plane” but sadly the website closed down and I no longer have it. I look forward to your video on travel outfits!

I just bought a nice soft bamboo pants and top set for the second stage of my 24 hour flight . First stage is 7 hours then I’ll change for the 2nd which is 17 hour long haul flight.

Excellent video. I already follow all these tips. But you did give me a thought. We are flying to Canada (for a 6 month stay) in early September and I already picked out my travel outfit. It is a nice soft, loose tracksuit. But, it is a light lavender color and has slightly wide pant legs that aren't tapered. So, now I am wondering if it will be too light a color (like you mentioned with the white problem) and, will the bottom of the pant leg be too loose with regards to the bathroom floor. I might need to rethink my travel outfit now....

I am always cold on a plane. For me, I have a cardigan sweater in my personal luggage. I also wear socks. The biggest problem is that my feet do not reach the floor and they dangle. Not at all comfortable on long flights, like to Europe or cross country. Or short flights for that matter. Kills my back. We do mostly long road trips now, 4 more states to go.

I have t traveled for forty years. And I probably won’t be anytime soon. But if I did, I would wear sweatpants, or something comfortable. And a comfortable shirt, and take a jacket. I might even buy some new crocs to some kind of slides to wear with socks. I don’t white clothes around my house. I’m a bit of a slob. Whenever I eat I get something on me. I’m not much of a flyer. I would rather go by car and be able to stop when I want to. I’m just not a good traveler. Anyway you put it. I guess I’m a homebody.

I think my last flight was to Amsterdam Holland🎉 And it was a looooooong one. Lol😅 A Dutch woman kept hitting the back of my seat because I had it in recline position. At work, out in the community, running errands should be tolerable to wear a favorite fragrance. I despise the smells of cigarette smoke, coffee, mothballs, curry, garlic, and seafood. It makes me vomit, but I'd never be whiny enough to complain or expect people to conform to my preferences. Wear and cook what you like and afford others the same courtesy.
