Cold Air Intake and Tune tends to be one of the most popular options for Mustang GT owners as their first mod. CAIs like the JLT CAI and PMAS are often paired with a tune to gain horsepower. While this combo can lead to 25-30 rwhp, which is impressive, most of the gain is from the tune like Lund or PBD tunes.
JLT CAI or PMAS CAI that are paired with the tune often result in 3-5 HP, but also heat soak that can have negative impact on your horsepower. If you own a gen 3 coyote motor found in 2018 and up Mustang GTs then you actually lose horsepower given how efficient the stock air box is.

Thank you! I’ll have lots more. Been to Toronto couple times with my mustang. One time was in the winter and nearly got stuck in a snow storm. Your winters are brutal lol

Just got a 2024 GT PP. First mod will be the supercharger which my dealer will do, to maintain a warranty.

Hi, keep up the GREAT work with your information. Regarding cold air Intakes versus oem stock air boxes. My understanding is that for 2018 and up that the oem box has tubing from the box to the grill, which is basically a cold air Intake system. Think about it? I've done this exact same mod on my 18 pony and all seems going well.

Yeah the tubing is also bigger compared to 15-17. Alenjandro Flores (Lund tuner) has a really good video on it. But yeah for 18+ you def don't need a CAI

When I was thinking about getting a cold air intake I did my research. And what I found was that most people share exactly this idea. The stock air box is really good, just add a drop in filter. But what I never found a good answer for is why the GT350 and gen 3s with the Ford Performance calibration like Mach 1s and Bullits have open air boxes with a cone filter like a JLT? 🤷‍♂️

It’s funny because that’s exactly what I was confused on! Mainly I looked at for performance tune and the fact that Mach 1/Bullitt have the CAI. Ford must know something lol. But figured dealing with high IATs with CAI wasn’t worth it lol

The reason is that these special upgraded MUSTANG'S have a different motor.

So I have a 2018GT. Ford sells a bigger throttle and cold air intake with a tune. I recommend getting one from a trusted brand and letting ford install it to keep your warranty. It will make the car sound better and will help when you add headers

@@richardtellez00tellez77 I am in Canada, but as a guess, probably $1000 USD for the kit plus labor. Not sure about warranty as I can't get clarification, so far seems like warranty is only for the kit itself.

Yeah the kit he is mentioning is around $1100 but Ford dealer has to install which means labor will be significantly higher than other shops. Not to mention the tune is pretty conservative compared to Lund, pbd etc.

What’s up man I just bought a k&n air filter for my 17 GT. I had a friend tell me I shouldn’t use these because they cause engine issues. Did you have any problems with it?

What if it’s a closed cold air intake, I’m currently looking at the corsa cold air intake with the carbon fiber, do you think it will lose power with it?

It's better than open element intake. However, you really won't notice any power gain on 18+ cars. It will look cool but that is about it. I really wanted the look but figured I'd be wasting my money

What if I get the pmas fenderwell intake. Would I lose power if I’m doing roll races? It’s an open air intake but no where near the engine bay.

Yeah there’s not many dyno videos that shows true air intake gain. It’s all stock vs tune and intake

That’s not true. Roush C.A.I… is a sealed concept and will give you more horsepower gains. I wouldn’t take this guys advice, specially when you’re putting in an oiled air filter what do you think is gonna happen in the long run?

Cold air intakes are a waste of money. I call them hot air intakes because you'll lose hp because it will suck in hot air from the engine. The stock air box is closed and will suck in more cooler air.

Yes that exactly why I left it. My tuner also said the dyno gain of 2-5 rwhp is really from open hood but driving with hood closed won’t result in much

I disagree, I saw a +23 tq at 2000 rpm and +16hp +11tq peak with just a Roush intake before a tune. The roush intake is closed so it's not pulling in the hot air but bigger to allow more air

Unless you use the ones with a lid. They still take in air thru the front grill.

@@xanderbeck7095 B.S. - The Roush Stage 1 kit comes with their tune, and those numbers are what they claim with the tune loaded. It's not possible for most people to achieve the numbers they claim with the intake installed and the tune loaded, and it's definitely only possible to reach them with their tune loaded in addition to the intake. Also, their airbox is only partially sealed. IATs are still higher than stock with their airbox. Finally, the OEM airbox and paper filter already flow more CFM than what the engine can consume at WOT, so what difference does it make if the Roush intake flows a tiny bit more? If you load the tune included with the Roush Stage 1 kit without the intake installed, you'll get almost exactly the same results, which isn't much.
