Thank you for this demonstration. This is the clearest illustration of what a serger can do that I've come across. My serger is old--really old--but now I feel like I can go over the instruction book and try out some things more successfully. I still would need to get re-learn its manual threading threading but even that doesn't seem so intimidating now. When I bought it, I also got tons of extra feet for it. In the distant past, I did do some ruffling with it for an old friend that wants some ruffles on some upholstery and dining room things to create a country feel for her century old house. So, yes, I have used it successfully just not on clothing because I found my upscale sewing machines to be easier to use for seam finishing. I just got frustrated with the threading and the lack of good colors to match what I was sewing. I really should give it another try for clothing instead only home dec items.

Great video! Threading order is crucial; not all models follow the same order demo’d here. Different color thread is a great help with troubleshooting stitch issues. 😊 Match the left thread with fabric. Easy way to remember the DF - set higher to ‘gather up’, and set lower to ‘stretch down’. Practice every day and don’t be afraid ❤❤❤

Nice thing about Babylock sergers is that if one thread breaks, you only have to re-thread that one! Most sergers have a special order so that means re-threading all needle & looper threads. 😢

I had an Imagin too my hubby surprised me with it while I was making our daughters wedding dress. I wish I was a fly on the wall when he walked into that female quiltbshop in his suit looking handsome ( he is ) striding straight to the serger. I used it 10 years then upgraded to an evolution because it has a cover stitch.i have had that machine 6 years and never did a cover stitch but I did recently learn how to change the pressure foot pressure ( game changer!l)

Thank you for this video! I'm 65 and feel certain I will never be a "serger devotee" but I now need to pull out a serger I received new as a gift 25+ years ago - and it will obviously need service. Due to a few oddball body measurements, I figured out at age 13 that I could mostly only have clothing that fit me if I made them myself. Trousers, shirts, dresses, jackets had to be "me-made". I was so thankful to be able to purchase t-shirts, sweaters and most other knit clothing in RTW. Now, those things no longer fit, so its time to pull out the serger. This video is an excellent overall introduction of how the parts of the machine work together. (I had thought of using multi-colored thread for testing, but had no idea what to look for if I did!😅) I subscribed to make certain I can find you again!

I am a rookie, I bought a Bernina L890, it's is an air threader, all this info is automatc in the machine along with a sewing book. All the info is automatic in the machine, and all the settings are intended in videos in the machine settings. Best machine on the market.

Don’t read the manual. Put in your brand and model and find a coordinating video. It will save you time and frustration. I have a threading hint for you if you don’t have an air threader like she is demonstrating. First make note of your current thread tension settings. Lift the presser foot and loosen the tension discs to 0. Cut your thread close to whatever threads you’re using. Replace with new thread and tie a square not . Gently pull the thread’s from the stitch plate watching the needles for the knots. The knots won’t go through the needle. Cut the needle threads and keep pulling the looper threads until new thread is threaded. Thread the needles and you’re done. Reset your tension discs. It literally takes just a few minutes and is safe for your serger.

@mmills5951 This is a great tip. I tried it.....without writing down my tension....well, it didn't end well. Tension messed up, all kinds of drama. I had to have the service shop do it, and I have since taken a photo of the tension settings. WIll put the tension to 0 to see if I have better luck with threading those Loopers.

Your needles are most important and should be changed after large projects or my guide is about 6hrs of sewing….imagine how many times those needles are piercing fabric! I would be lost without my server. I sew knits, polyester, and all forms of cottons and mixed fabric types. I wore out one serger and now need to get another thread plate to do stretch fabrics. Just be fearless and try it.

I bought my Elna L4 serger in 1986. It does not have differential feed, but I am fine with that. I am not a big fan of gathering. If i need differential, it’s built into my normal machines.

I’m guessing the reason they added differential feed is because knit fabric has drastically improved since the 80s. Being able to adjust it depending on the stretch of your knit fabric makes it much easier to sew.

I think you might be able to do it on a regular serger if the dials are at the top. My serger has knobs and I think the from the looper would get caught on one of the needle knobs. But you know what, I’m going to try and see if it will work!

I got a manual, a laminated quick start sheet, and an “inspiration” guide with the baby lock. I think they came standard. The inspiration guide shows all of the different possibilities. The manual was pretty basic info.

It depends on your fabric and the amount of stretch it has. Test it’s out and see what works best.

I would definitely venture to do more with my serger if it threaded this easily. My serger is a nightmare to thread. I sweated bullets trying to thread it the last time, and it took me about 2 hours. Felt confident and change the thread colour....😢..had to take it to a servicing shop to get it done...sigh....I will keep trying though.

Thank you. My Funlock is about 35 years old. Any tips for an overlocker that doesn't have differential feed? I do have variable foot pressure, would that be useful? I know it's not the same, but am wondering if it would cause less 'waves' on stretch fabric if the pressure was eased. Or would that affect the stitches in some other way?

I have a funlock (004) without differential feed as well. I sew mainly cotton lycra and french terry with no problems. I only change some of the tension, like when I use it to finish edges on light weight wovens. I’m sure you could reduce waves when sewing knits with reducing the pressure on the foot: I do that on my sewing machine each time I sew knits on that and it does help. Turn up the knob ever so slightly and test, would be my advice.

I’m not sure what you mean by cuffs. I finish the bottoms of sleeves flat before I sew the sleeves together. You can sew in the round without a free arm, most vintage machines don’t have free arms, but it takes practice.

I've finished sleeve bands in the round by lifting presser foot, placing sleeve in and starting from there. Just go slowly, being careful not to catch and fabric folds or creases. Must constantly smooth out sleeve as you go. I'm a newbie and I find it pretty easy.

This is great! I didn't know sergers could do all this. I got an older Brother machine, used, with no manual. I managed to service it the best I could and it seems to work. Now I wanna try these other stitches! I have to create my own manual lol thanks ❤
