Avoiding methane and escaping worms in my outdoor worm bin while I go away

Wise not to put manure in if your not sure what it's been sprayed with 👌👍, Gilligan looks great Sandra I'm sure they'll be fine whilst you're away. A new grandchild 😁❤️💪👌👍

Thanks Nick. We have a source of safe manure, but it's a bit of a drive so we couldn't manage to go get some before Christmas. I think we'll go when we get home because the manure is nice and aged as well so it can go straight into my worm bins and garden, etc. we saw the farmer over Christmas and he asked us "why did you come over and get some more worms?!" It's the farm where we got our giant Vancouver Island worms in a load of manure. ~ Sandra

Worms can live year-round in our climate, Greta, but they really don't do much "work" below 10°C. We are away at our son's (he and his wife just welcomed their new baby three days ago!). Wouldn't you know it, but Gilligan's heat system failed while we are away. My worms are going to be a little chilly when I get home! It's still above freezing here, but not 15°! ~ Sandra

Good plan for an extended trip Sandra. The worms are just fine and dandy with the leaves. I saved a bunch of flower and herb heads like fennel and dill, I have been pulverizing and adding to their worm chow. If I was to be gone for a while I would just mix them in the bins without pulverising, bonus, the bins smell like a salad, lol. Have a safe trip and a great 2025! Stay Well!!!!

Oh that's a good idea to use the flowers and herbs at the end of the season like that, Brian. I have a huge amount of Greek oregano I could have pulled from the garden and dried. It's still alive, so maybe my worms will go on a Mediterranean diet when I get home! Happy new year! ~ Sandra

Thanks so much! We kept the air holes in Gilligan quite small to keep out the rain, but there are hundreds of them. Still, I don't think it's enough ventilation if we had a gassy pumpkin in there! Happy new year to you, too! ~ Sandra

Gilligan looks amazing! Lots of great info But is it ok to put the pumpkin in the lazy compoting without touching it and just leave it there for months or year?

Absolutely! Always make sure you add twice as much volume in "browns" -- things like leaves, cardboard, fine wood chips, etc., and your compost will turn out great. Thanks for watching, Faye! ~ Sandra
