Easiest whiff punish is simply backdashing at the start of a round & if they trying to attack you they'll usually whiff. Then use a fast launcher ASAP. This doesn't work all the time, if they do something with huge reach but you could end up blocking. If you do get hit, then next round you either stay still or SS if you're expecting a linear attack.

how do you whiff punish strings? i try to whiff punish the first part, but the second part hits my attempt to whiff punish. and side stepping is a bit iffy.

Russell Kwok whiff punishing strings is risky unless you know the particular string very well. It's best to block the first part and sidestep or duck THE END of the string instead of the other way around. Hope that makes sense

sort of, it's annoying at lower levels, people are mashing strings from far away, and when i try to make them stop, i just get hit...it's one of does high, low , high, or high, mid, high type of thing where it's hard to know what branch of the string is gonna come out. and since strings move your character so far forward, it's hard to space.

a counter hit is when you hit the opponent while he was trying to hit you too but you hit him first. whiff punish is when an opponent's move doesn't connect because he "hit the air" and missed and then before he can recover you hit him.

wEgGeSpEnSt counters are when you hit the opponent while they are in the attack animation. A whiff punish is when they get the move out, but dont connect and you hit them

Counter is when you hit them during the startup frames of an attack. Whiff punish is when the move is already out and you hit them while they are recovering

A move has three stages 1) The startup frame. This is the point where you start to move your arm to punch someone; if you hit them during the startup it will be a counter attack 2) the active frames. This is the point where the move can actually hit/do damage; if you hit them during this point, it will count as a trade (you both get hit) 3) Recovery frame. This is the point after the attack where they are unable to move/attack/block, etc; hitting them during this time counts as a punish (for example, a whiff punish)

You rank up faster my playing people of the same or similar ranks. If you're fighting someone 3 ranks higher you won't rank up as fast as fighting one rank higher

"Counter-hits" are a different concept (I've only been playing for a few days so I think thats a quick attack after a block that gives a little extra damage) so calling it a whiff punish actually is better. This game is pretty complex.
