Hi AVP Studios, you should check under the Panasonic camera menu there is HDMI recording setting. That should trigger your camera and your sound recorder.

On the G9 & G90 I have tried all the HDMI settings available, nothing works. On Tascam website it does only list the GH5 as being compatible.

I was duped into buying this unit for the feature of HDMI (timecode) recording also. However, I've searched KZbin for video on the DR-701D with accessing this function, but to no avail. I've tried connections with HDMI looping from my Nikon D810, back to the Tascam, in "Timecode"mode, via RTC, HDMI and LTC, but no audio syncing using start/stop by Nikon to Tascam at all ! Then in Tascam's pdf manual, Pg.16 it mentions "connecting a time code generator". Then it all made logical sense. Even with HDMI cables looped, the camera and DR-701D's time, has to be in synchronicity to work effectively. Besides, it's way to many cables, just to get audio synced in post. I'm returning my DR-701D, since newly bought, and I already had Tascam's DR-70D. Wireless is the future anyway ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6bPYnSog62dZ9k

HDMI based sync uses three features: Timecode stamp, clock sync, start/stop triggers. 1) Timecode will timestamp the audio file with the time coming from the camera HDMI at the time of the take start. This is traditional dual system sync, similar to sync using a slate but automatic in the software. 2) Clock Sync will use the HDMI signal to run the audio recorder so that there will be no drift as long as there is a connection between the two devices. This is similar to using a proper timecode input but the implementation is different. 3) Start/stop trigger will start and stop the audio take automatically. Some cameras are strange in their HDMI implementation, so support of these features is not always present. Goodle "List of cameras supported via HDMI connection". As an example, the D810 mentioned above is listed as supporting start/stop and clock sync on the Tascam page, but not timecode. My Fujifilm cameras are not even listed on the Tascam page. Here is some info from sound devices MIXPREII that does the same. You connect HDMI, set everything to HDMI or HDMI Fujifilm and see if the features are actually supported on your camera firmware and sound recorder firmware combination. You may have to set the camera to output timecode in the proffered way. ---THIS IS THE HDMI START/STOP TRIGGER: REC TRIGGER Sets record triggering from either timecode, HDMI flag or HDMI FUJIFILM flag. The default is Off. ---THIS IS THE HDMI CLOCK SYNC : HDMI TC IN Many DSLR-style cameras output timecode via HDMI. If HDMI TC In is selected without an HDMI source connected, the MixPre II will report missing sync. The MixPre II has two HDMI timecode modes,. HDMI flag for Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon and Blackmagic cameras and HDMI FUJIFILM for FUJIFILM cameras. LTC Timecode is not present on the MixPre-3 II and MixPre-6 II Stereo Out or the MixPre-10 II BNC out when HDMI TC In is in use. When set to HDMI TC In, the connected camera determines the sample rate of the MixPre II. ---THIS IS THE HDMI TIMECODE TIMESTAMP: TC MODE Select between Free Run, Time of Day, Rec Run, BNC In (MixPre-10 II only), Aux In 1, Aux In 2, HDMI TC In, HDMI FUJIFILM or Off. When using Aux In 1 or 2 for Timecode, be sure to set Inputs>Aux In Mode to Timecode.

@@aristotle_4532 Okay, I believe my camera supports timecode and maybe start/stop syncing, but guess I'll find out next week. I ordered one. Was hoping to get the Zoom F4 on sale, but they're not even being sold, forget sale. Found a used one for $160 more than the TASCAM but don't think it's worth it for the slightly better everything since I'm already pushing my budget.

Great review! Have you come across a product that can serve as a deadcat for the built in microphones?
