You answered a question I've had. I've noticed considerable compression artefacts, even at 1080P when set to TELE. It makes more sense if the video is digitally cropped rather than using the whole sensor and changing the optics. This is a slight disappointment, but you get what you pay for... Better to record at 4K wide and crop after as you say. Audio is very good though.

It's essentially a high-quality stereo field microphone- with a camera slapped on. My opinion is that this really, REALLY is a musician's camera. The video quality is alright, but it excels in capturing stereo audio when you have a wide soundstage e.g. widely spaced instruments or sound sources.

I have the device. The visual quality is ok, certainly better than other webcams in terms of what you can see. Other plus: ease of use with all manual buttons, small size, excellent audio and that you can plug in an extra lavilier mic. Cons: while you can power it using usb with the same cable that the recording signal goes to your computer, it would have made more sense to have access to the batteries and memory card from the side. As it is now (I have a camera clip plate on the bottom, attached to a desktop/ small travel tripod) I have to remove it from the mount, remove the plate...to be able to get to the batteries and the card. I wasn't aware of the extra battery unit, thanks. An attempt at constructive critique from this viewer. Instead of talking and rambling using different cameras from different angles, cut to the chase and use the q2n from the start. Put the item you want to review as the star and film most of the video using the product itself and only use *one other camera* to film it. It would have been possible to have a much tighter video with more impact and content about the q2n that was shorter.

Using a variety of cameras TO FILM THE REVIEWER from various angles detracts from the reviewed product... it is not a question about experience in using cameras instead my comment was all about pedagogics and simplicity. I also notice that there are others here who have said more or less the same thing "all that talk" writes another person at the start of his comments...

Great review. I'm considering getting one for recording audio directly from my mixing desk. Zoom certainly have a good reputation when comes to recording audio and the fact that you can record video would be a bonus for me.

Thanks for the video. I have the original Q2N and considered going to the 4K version. However, they omitted a setting from the new version I really need. The only scene-setting that really gives me decent video, in the place I use it most is the "Concert Hall" setting. But on the 4K version, they did away with that setting. So I have doubts whether the new version would actually work for me. It would certainly be nice if Zoom would provide some sort of user-defined (or custom) setting.

Hi, I am not quite sure how you connected the Q2n 4K to that little monitor. That would be helpful in setting up shots as the screen on the camera itself is quite small. Do you just have it as a webcam? Thanks.

I am curious which type of SD cards you used in this Zoom? I just got a good deal, but need a card that writes fast enough to keep going once video and sound combine. Any tips on which one I should be looking for?

Thanks for the video. It was really amazing. I'm a musician and normally i play in churches and places with natural acoustic and low light. I have to a Zoom H2 that records in surround mode. Does this one has the same quality of the H2? What about the quality of the video in places with with lower light?

I just bought 4 of these cameras. Putting them through their paces. However... Why on earth, would you put a tether on your lens cap... But leave the lens hood free of any ability to tether it to the camera? What were they thinking??

thanks for your well informed presentation. I am agonising over the choice of an extra camera to be able to make 2-camera video of live gigs, and learning from you that it doesn't have image stabilisation has probably put me off this particular camera. On the other hand I could put it stationary on a tripod and leave it running to get the basic scene, using my other Panasonic HDC SD100 as the roving camera with zoom available for the close-in footage of soloists. The fact that it will record uncompressed 24-bit / 48kHz audio is a plus in that I won't need to buy another Zoom H1N, although I'll mostly be using it with a fairly hi-end external stereo short shotgun mic. I take your point about poor battery life. One important question if you find the time to answer please: how does it perform under low light conditions and frequently changing and mixing colours from an LED stage lighting rig? This is absolutely crucial to the choice of camera that I will have to make. My Panasonic is poor in that regard, and produces some really quite 'smudgy' and indistinct images, and doesn't cope well with changing colours, as you'll be able to view in the link I'll paste here. Hi, I just bought a Zoom Q2n 4K. It's a few steps up from my old Flip video camera. The plan is to record live jazz performances. I would like to add a 2nd Zoom camera to get a different camera angle and then link into one video. What software would you recommend for doing the editing?

I have no experience on editing on a PC, but if you are using a MAC than Final Cut Pro X is great and handles multi-cam editing very well, its what I have been using since it was released.

Hi, I am wondering what this camera is like at doing close up work. The first video I want to do will need me to focus in on the gear ratio's chart on my lathe. That will be about 5 or 6 inches from the subject to the camera. I am wondering if it can achieve this?

What is the use case for this? When would you use this over something like an osmo pocket with external mic or gopro with media mod? It would seem that both of those would provide better video.

You are right, they probably would but for certain applications this provides an 'all in one' solution. I think this is why Zoom are targeting musicians. I find it great as a third or fourth camera for my reviews, quick and easy to set up as a wide camera and as I can power it from a USB block I have no fear of the batteries running out during the shoot.

hi, i need you to do me a quick test on your canon M50 i may have found a common fault. my original one doesnt focus when there is only a horizontal line in the frame like a black line on a white background ie a gap in a chest of draws. if there is anything else it will focus on it so its just horizontal lines from the cameras point of view, this can be repeated when you turn the camera 90 degrees into portrait but now its for vertical as the fault is related to the camera's horizontal. i got another M50 and it does the same thing, i got the second as i was about to send mine back to canon, i want to get a few people to test as it might be a common thing? thanks

Be extremely careful that this camera does not tip over when attached to a tri pod, the housing that holds the tripod is not strong. That's exactly what happened to mine, 5 month old camera , now useless. Very disappointed that Zoom would not make this right and cover this under warranty.

I just found out about this camera. It seems to be a replacement for the Q4n - do you know that one? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4a7hpl8bKuSoJY - it looks very different, but seems to have all the same controls and functionality, and to be designed for the same purpose (music recording). I've been using my Q4n as a webcam for music lessons on Zoom (yep the other "Zoom"), but a recent zoom update (to the meetings app not the camera) has cause bars to appear across the screen when using the Q4n. And I can find no way of getting an updated driver as the camera seems to be obsolete. Hence my research for a replacement. The only downside to the Q2n as a replacement seems to be the lack of a foldout monitor screen - which I don't need for zoom meetings/lessons anyway. I'm presuming it can be used as a webcam?

All that talk, and then finally we see the product's actual video quality at the very end. Why not shoot the entire video with this camera? Or switch halfway through the video? The little snippet of Zoom video at the end did not impress me. I can't imagine why I would use this instead of my iPhone with an external mic. Clearly, if you want decent video quality, you are still stuck buying an expensive DSLR or camcorder. This unit is not a solution.

I do agree with most of what you say. I think the point of this little unit is its excellent audio quality I take on board your comment about me not showing enough footage of its video quality, but in this video I wanted to show its features as much as its video quality. Its not always easy to get the balance right.
