Canada would be a different country today had they not cancelled the Arrow. It was the best of the best. Imagine what it would be like today w all of today’s tech. This single event changed the course of history, so sad. I just about cry every time I see something on the Arrow. It was gone looking before I was born.Diefenbaker was an idiot. The Americans were scared that we had something better then they had. Our aviation industry has never recovered. All of the men & women went to work for companies in the states.
@raynus11605 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty ambitious title to assign to an airplane that never even fired a shot and completed only 2% of its proposed flight testing & evaluation process. The USA actually contributed significantly to the Arrow's development and was a proponent of the program. Canada's aviation industry recovered just fine - Canadian aerospace (mainly Bombardier) went on to become the 3rd largest airplane builder on the planet, after Boeing and Airbus.

My career was going to be aeronautical engineering - still love planes, my family had our own airstrip and hangars and used a Bellanca to get to Calgary for sawmill parts in rapid order. Then the Conservatives happened to Canada - bad news for aerospace and my prospects.

What a HUGE mistake for Canada. Where would we be in 2022 if we were this far in 1959? Certainly wouldn't be getting milked for the F35. I can't think about too long otherwise I start muttering terrible things to myself about Diefenbaker...

Very easy to take granted, the engineering that went into the plane. "Rival" aircraft designs did NOT have the nit-picky details that Avro arrow had; titanium membrane; 5+ fuel tanks (for long range); Mach 3 characteristics; 630 nm mile range (if conserving fuel); 1 500 nm range ferrying; an advanced flight control system; enhanced radar.

@OffTheBeatenPath_4 жыл бұрын
Lol...no. More advanced airframe and two engines vs one. The only thing in common is the development date and delta wing.
@nitram4194 жыл бұрын
@@OffTheBeatenPath_ Unlike the Delta Dart, the Arrow had no fuselage area-ruling. In the mid-1950s, when the Arrow's design was being finalised, the Americans were much more advanced than the Canadians in terms of supersonic aerodynamics design. The Arrow's fuselage was basically just a long straight box, from the wing-root leading-edge all the way back to the trailing-edge. The other thing the Arrow didn't have was variable-geometry engine intakes to manage the shockwaves according to flow Mach number. This is why they couldn't get the Arrow to even reach Mach 2 -- although at the time they didn't realise why. They just thought (mistakenly) that a more powerful engine would solve the Arrow's demonstrated performance deficiencies in speed & range.
@williamheyman54394 жыл бұрын
@@nitram419 Wowsers! Someone who knows about the "area rule." Why the F-102 was lacking and replaced by the F-106. Anyway, it was all a moot point as the USSR replaced manned bomber formations with ICBMs so all air defense interceptors were obsolete. In the US McNamara eliminated all army and air force air defense. They were all cancelled. No Nike Ajax, no Nike Hercules, No F-10.. whatever air defense interceptors. Some were sent to Vietnam as air-ground whatevers, but quickly replaced by F-4. The to-be president Bush was on the list for F-102s in Vietnam, but they were all withdrawn. The day of the air defense interceptor was over. Hard to believe how many times I have tried to explain this. I was there. NO AIR DEFENSE INTERCEPTORS. And as I have said to all my Canadian friends (I was the US member of the Australia, Britain, Canada, America ABCA Treaty Organization,) The Arrow was a wonderful aircraft. It was just past its time. As all (that means all) air defense interceptors were past their prime. But I am sure that I will see this again in my KZbin inbox, and it will say, again, but the Arrow was such a wonderful........yes, it was, but now the 50's are over. That was SEVENTY years ago. Musk is going to Mars. Time to stop with the nostalgia about shooting down the Red Baron.
