I'll be 70 next week and I totally agree. There was something magical about the music we grew up with that will never be repeated, certainly not by the brain dead "artists"of today. This a oong never fails to bring an emotional response out of me, usually without dry eyes. The final moments of Suppers Ready has the same effect.

I saw Yes play this when I was 17 years old when the album came out in 1977. It was the third time that I saw Yes. But this version of Awaken is simply the best version I have ever seen or heard. I'm so happy that this was videotaped. It is so powerful.

I was a diehard Yes purist for many years. All these incarnations and offshoots disgusted me because they weren’t the real Yes. But then I started watching these videos, and I realized that because the Yes that I loved would never be again, I had to let go of my prejudices. As a listener I have been very unfair. This is a FANTASTIC version of a very difficult live song. Jon was the soundtrack to my life, but only in the way I wanted him to be. Now I’m free to enjoy all the wonderful interpretations by other bands, ensembles, and orchestras.
@rodneybaker41323 жыл бұрын
And may those performances and interpretations multiply exponentially. The underlying music is classic and amply strong to support them. Ours and the next and unborn generations will benefit greatly.

That is a good point. We have a choice either to "fossilize" the music of Yes and treat it as a relic, or to accept that the music itself can still be made to live and breathe in performances such as this. Still, I am not going to be so open-minded that my brain falls out: desperate deeds have been done in the name of Yes which are the exact opposite of this.

Its OK, but the album of this track, when you hear that first guitar kick in, it almost goes beyond rock music. Its unbelievably powerful, and really hasn't been recreated anywhere I've heard. They are good tries, but the originals really are original. I heard 'any you and i' once played and realized that it was Trevor Rabin becuase the guitar was just nowhere near Steve Howe's level. Great music really spoils you. I'm no purist of anybody, just saw a six year old play Geddy Lee's bass line on a Rush track. Jon frequently plays with high school kids 'giving the best'. But as soon as I listen to this guitar I can't help but go back to he Relayer track, its unbelievable.

+Juliano Augusto Amen & all praise to the Universe. How fortunate & blessed we are to be living in his lifetime. Yes changed my life forever back in January of 1972 with the release of FRAGILE and they have been my favorite band ever since. Witnessing what's happened to them over the last 7 years has been excruciatingly painful, but seeing Jon & this incredible band and orchestra do this incomparable rendition of Awaken brought tears to me eyes...something that rarely happens with me. We can only hope that at some point in the future--while they're still able, up and about--the hatchets will be buried (and not in each others' skulls) and the magic will happen once again. I think they still have it in them.

Jon Anderson is an ageless, joyful wonder. The scoring of the piece with orchestral instruments and choir is masterful. The guitar playing was fantastic, but the vocals are what sent it over the top for me. Jon Anderson perfection + incredibly scored and performed backing vocals and atmospherics. Michael Swam... Although I quite agree with your comments regarding this performance (which is saying something, because I have rarely, if ever, found myself in agreement with any comment that I've read on KZbin), it is nevertheless a point to observe that anyone who appreciates the extraordinary performance in this video would do well to acquaint themselves with the virtuosic talents of Thorvaldur Bjarni Thorvaldsson. For in addition to the fact that Thorvaldur conceived this performance in partnership with Jon Anderson, he was also responsible for scoring, arranging and conducting the orchestra, the chorus, and the band. As if that weren't enough, he was also responsible for performing the intricate guitar arrangement that was originally written and performed by Steve Howe. At that, his performance of that guitar arrangement is so masterful that it is at least equal to, if not better than, Steve Howe's. In my view, rather than teaming with Jean Luc Ponty for his next project, Jon Anderson would have done far better to have teamed with the exceptional talent of Thorvaldur Bjarni Thorvaldsson.

Why do I find this performance so fantastically moving? There I was, back in 1978, in my room in the attic, a 14 year old boy discovering the beauty of YES music, like I was the only one in the world at that age; while my peers revelled in disco, ABBA, KISS, maybe ELO. A friend of mine - he RIP - presented me with a cassette recording of this album. YES opened up a world of music for me. A world of colours, thoughts, feelings; a trust in intuition, in emotion, in the wordless magic of sound. No 'message', no 'fashion', just creativity, originality, dare. It stayed with me ever since, and helped shape my many other musical adventures and discoveries. It gave me musical 'guts'. Every now & then I get into a 'YES mood' and play a few of their albums upside down, with a smile from ear to ear. I am not a 'spiritual' guy. I am a sceptic, a 100% agnostic, and quite happy with it. Yet I am highly committed to making music with other people, contacting with my fellow humans on that inexplicable level of creativity and happiness. Music is a fabulous means to express and share our humanity, both our thoughts and our feelings, both what we do and what we don't understand. Witnessing this KZbin performance I note that today, 2015, so many other people of all kinds of ages, in the band, the orchestra, the choir have come to enjoy that 'strange' YES music, get excited, feel the beauty of it, become a part of it, totally commited in giving it their best shot - and a great shot at that. Of course the original recording is in my veins; but today, I find this recording to be even more exciting. The 1978 attic boy witnessing a stageful of shared musical excitement. Look at how many people this 'Awaken' song connects; the many players, the many vocalists. All using their skill to give expression to whatever the song is to each of them. The guitar player totally making the song his own, as if there never was a Steve before him. He almost makes me cry for all his joy. As per Jon, no voice in this world will ever match his; or will ever enrich my life as his voice did. I am so happy to see him having returned to the stage, find musical companions, and share his musicianship. To me, Jon is the proud keeper of the YES flame. LOVE to all who enjoy this performance!

I feel that Awaken is possibly the most incredible, intricate piece of rock to ever be written or performed. Most of the world doesn't have the capacity to get it. That's not a criticism but just an observation. It's a shame that they are such geniuses that the band went through so many lineup changes trying to keep all their genius in line with each other. The world is better because of Yes. They exemplify God's majesty and beauty through music.

+MrContradiction60 I can't stop watching this, and Jon's reaction at the end was wonderful, he absolutely loved it. As you said Mr Contradiction, only Yes could produce such soaring masterpieces that make your heart reel and your eyes moisten.

andyrowlands50029 This is without a doubt the "classical" music of our generation. Up there with Mozart, Bach, Beethoven.

After seeing yes 10 or 11 times live and awaken about as many times ... which was awesome as they have been in my life ... I think they as composers have to see this at least to me the pinnacle of the version ... I think they heard all along in their heads .... a grandiose performance a perfect mix all the textures between the band orchestra and choir was Beautiful this is just my opinion .... I’ve been along and with them since 1971 and never looked back They along with ELP, PinkFloyd , Tull , King Crimson , And all in that period took the risks of new frontiers in music ... And I’m blessed to be from that era of growth .... Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💯🎸

The Todmobile people should sell this to the PBS stations. They would buy it in a heartbeat. This would be perfect for public broadcasting. And it would get this video more exposure. People need to experience this.

Blimey! What a wonderful performance... How remarkable that Jon, though he was betrayed and abandoned by his life-long partners in Yes (whilst he lay in hospital at death's door, no less), has nevertheless been able to both maintain his personal and artistic integrity, and regain his health and his voice; all of which reaffirms the indisputable fact that Jon is, always has been, and forever will remain the guiding soul, spirit, and one-and-only true visionary of the concept and music of Yes.

richard Hines ... You'd have done well to have read my comments before you decided to post your ill-informed comment ("Lets not forget who else wrote this music , and give credit to who ever wrote this orchestration"). Because, if you had read my comments (which were posted three months ago), you'd know that, in response to a comment posted by Michael Swan (which appears below), I wrote as follows... "... In my view, rather than teaming with Jean Luc Ponty for his next project, Jon Anderson would have done far better to have teamed with the exceptional talent of Thorvaldur Bjarni Thorvaldsson."

Fallen Angel Things I liked ; added voices , rhythms , tempo changes , reworking of Ricks segment . Things I didn't like as much ; the somewhat meandering prelude , and the harsh tone from the guitar , which he mostly ran with , unlike the various tones presented on the original . The one thing almost unforgivable ; at the end of the original theres a Harrison like simple descending guitar riff which signifies that the higher multi dimensional experience the observer has undergone is now over and its time to return to ones humble , mortal life . In this version it is removed in its entirety . How would you feel if when reading a novel you thus far dearly loved , only to find that someone had ripped out the last page ?

I am hearing this song for the first time. It makes me cry -from deep inside. Aristotle observed, that it is in man to search for beauty. We know it in the moment of ineffable experience. A ‘joy by surprise’…a moment of spontaneous awakening.

WOW! Simply amazing! This is an evidence that heaven exists! Tears in my eye and shivers down my spine all the way through the song. Jon is YES - it is soooo evident, even when he is not supported with the rest of the band. If only Chris was there too, and a dot on the end (country guitar lick) so I could say it is perfect. Andrej

This version brought tears of joy to my eyes and my heart sang to see how much Jon enjoyed performing with this ensamble- the best Awaken without a doubt in my mind and I've heard it performed back to the original Going for the One tour to today. Brilliant orchestral composition and impecable musicianship. Bravo!

How great would it be to see Jon Anderson & Todmobile do a world tour re working all Jon's Yes songs? After all, they're his tunes and the current Yes line up are just a tribute act now trading on his legacy. Great to see he's still out there though. And still sounding as brilliant as ever.

Awaken has always been my passion, my very favourite song of my very favourite band, YES. A loyal and completely infatuated fan since 1972. BUT THIS .... Oh my God!! Vibrant, Sharp, Emotional and truly the best rendition of Awaken I have ever seen and heard! ......Perhaps! ...... YES in concert playing Awaken at New Bingley Hall, Staffordshire, England 1977, on the Going For The One Tour, by the classic line up A,S,H,W & W, has gotta take some beating, ......I think it just did!!.......... It literally did bring a tear to my eye!! ............. Thank you so much for sharing.
