I have learned so much from this channel. Recently bought a 1989 Evinrude 100XP. Previous owner "Deleted" the VRO. Still had the pulse limiter. They also decided to put the old style choke carbs and smaller intake from a 70's 85hp on there. I was like, Brandon would have something to say about this engine. Got it all fixed up though.

Great video. Liked your verbal guidance keeping us informed. Small but important trick. When heavy corroded screws won't let loose, place screwdriver in screw slot and heat the screwdriver. Corrosion will melt and loosen screw. Do not force screw if still stuck or it might break. Repeat as before.

Those two stroke OMC/BRP 2-cyl loopers do shake a lot at idle.
@dazco1233 жыл бұрын
Until the mixture needles are set, you won't know how well it will idle. Any factory settings are just a starting point. I'll presume the throttle plates were dead even. I'm sure you'll button it at the sea trial. When cleaning most OMC carbs the throttle butterfly should be shimmed open somewhat, since the throttle plate doesn't expose 1 of the transition orifices until the plate opens slightly. I'm sure you opened and blew it out with air anyway, but for the popcorn eaters at home... I'm sure the shop was salivating just getting a good trim unit, very pricey and gearcases are the other piece of gold on those.

Great stuff, I had an 89 that did the same thing. I have been binge watching your videos and I have 2 questions for you if the time is available to reply. When you do all of the water pump replacements, what is the reason behind NOT replacing the thermostat to insure a healthy cooling system? I recently bought a 91 johnson 40, guy started it with muffs, ran ok, vro deleted, idled fast. He cleaned carbs, replaced water pump, replaced lower unit seals, held pressure and replaced oil. What would be your list "to check out" from there? Kinda new to this stuff, guess I am asking for some advice. Thank you for your time sir.

Dropping straight up knowledge in here. From a fellow marine engine part time tinkerer. Gears are common to be the cause of "issues" in a lower unit. Improper shim clearance is part of the restoration. The shop manual should spell out the correct play or correct shim tolerance at some point. Maybe bad or quick service at a shop or haphazard homeowner garage install without knowledge of what he was really doing.

My man you did an awesome job on this old motor which some mechanics told u lower unit unrepairable , like u said just replace it ! I would love to know how much u gave for the unrepairable motor and the 48 lower unit and parts to get u to a operable motor? Myself I’m about to take on a rig I bought for $600 , it a 17’ bass tracker I have to look at paperwork to see wat year the Tracker Evinrude 40 hp ( not sure wat year tracker used evinrude 40hp for their tracker 40 hp. ( maybe u know the year they used evinrude 40 hp?) anyway I bought the whole rig thinking they wouldn’t take a unrunning motor for a trade in right? So I see so far they just plugged up the oil line going into the motor but are still using the VRO SYSTEM to pump the premixed oil and gas up into the motor , but I watched a video on a 93 40hp evinrude conversion which they eliminated the VRO COMPLETELY! and did wat u did with that 50 hp , all I have to do is buy a new fuel pump and I’m gonna replace all the gas lines just to be on the safe side . I just need to watch and see wat they remove off the front of the motor and replaced it with a plug like u also did. Wish me luck cuz I ain’t no mechanic lol! Thanks for ur great video buddy! Tight lines!

I have a Johnson 50hp outboard I have no idea how old it is but am guessing it's about a 1999 model, it belonged to an outboard mechanic who could not get it to tick over in gear, it would stall every time you put it in gear to pull away, he used to rev it up the engine then "slam!" it in gear. docking it was fun though, as it an uncontrolled crash! I spent weeks getting this engine to run right, and the only way I could get it to tick over any were near right in gear was to increase the idol jet size. it's a darn silly idea using fixed jet carbs! anyhow my point is, an old engine needs more fuel to do the same job as a new engine, so if you have an old engine that won't tick over very well try increasing the idol jet size. you make a good video and it's much better because you use a tripod, some don't, and you get very seasick trying to watch them!

@@BrandonsGarage yes prices of boats have gotten stupid. In 2007 i bought a bayliner 175 with the merc 3.0 alpha 2. Ordered a sick tower with light bar and 4 speakers. Out the door taxes everything. Granted i installed everything like the extras. But that boat i used it almost every sunny day full of friends for 10 years. Did no maintenance other than air and oil changes and lower unit every spring. And i never had 1 problem in that 10 years. @BrandonsGarage2 жыл бұрын
Other than the shaft and shift rod, are the lowers the same? Same shape, similar year, etc? If this is for a 1989+ engine, and the lower you received is also for a 1989+ yes, you can swap the driveshaft and shift rod. However, the driveshaft will need to be shimmed, requiring a $400 shimming jig. Also, you'll need 2x new pinion nuts to torque it correctly. There is a driveshaft shimming service you can use to avoid some of the cost of the tools ebay.us/oIAhMN

Well, I've thought of that too; my issue is the replacement lower. I'm going to call it the value of it, not what I paid for it. If you consider it that way, I'm $1,200 into it. I have some high dollar K&O Outboards sitting on my shelf. I paid $40 for one of them- That doesn't mean I have $40 sitting on my shelf, as its worth much more; I have $700 sitting there collecting dust. And yeah, I do have some fun tool. A full set of OMC service tools almost; only missing a couple. That shift rod remover is really all you need; but if you find a vintage seal puller for the 5.5-9.5 HP lowers, it makes lift much easier.
