OUR FIRST HAMMAM EXPERIENCE BACK IN MOROCCO: Have you ever had a Moroccan hammam?

It's our first hammam experience back in Morocco! After the last months of traveling in South Asia and Europe we have been looking forward to returning to Morocco and especially to go to the hammam.
We have never been to a hammam in Asilah, Morocco. But as we are in Asilah this week and in Asilah there are two options for hammam - a tourist spa experience or a local hammam. We chose the local hammam experience...
So what do you reckon?
Have you heard of a hammam before?
And have you ever been to a hammam?
Thanks for watching! :)

``Beseha`` for your Hammam as we say in Darija , actually it is custom in Morocco to go to the Hammam every Thursday, in order to prepare for Friday or Jumu`ah ,which as you know is the most important day of the week in Islam , so most people take regular showers during the week but most go to the Hammam on Thursday and also before special occasions like EL Aid , Ramadan and so on ... and guys don`t forget to check the East it`s a bit different than northern Morocco , Oujda which is the capital , Saidia beach/Marina , Rass EL ma or Ras Kebdana, Nador , Figuig the desert part of the East , Tafoughalt and Zegzel all are great places to visit .

To answer your question, Hammam, was originally called Moorish Baths by the Spaniards when the Moors where in Andalusia between 711AD to 1492AD. The Ottomans copied the baths and made their own version (which is excellent as well) called Turkish Baths. Traditionally Moroccans go to the Hammam about once a week, most people I guess go there once every 10 days or so. It is indeed an experience that exists in no other culture (except Turks) and the exfoliation is great.

That wasn't bath salt. That's a paste made with leftover crushed olives after extracting the oil. It's called Moroccan black soap or simply Saboun Beldi (traditional soap).

@@AwaywiththeSteiners You should apply that soap in the beginning and stay in the hottest room for a while, then once you rince the soap off, you can start the scrubbing, the soap takes the excess oil off the skin so the surface becomes rough enough to be scrubbed and dead skin will be removed more efficiently. Also, what we moroccans do is, when we're done and we're just cooling off in the changing room we refresh ourselves with some oranges (preferably navel oranges if available). Don't be shy, ask people around you so that you do things the right way and enjoy it even more. Also, avoid coming out of the hammam with exposed wet hair. You might get sick. And avoid drinking any cold liquid untill you get back to your regular body temperature. Feel free to ask when in doubt. Cheers to the Steiner family.

Hi, I"m from Casablanca, the Hammams there are lovely because you have the traditional ones which are very affordable, then the middle range one (price wise) is nicer and there is one that is very expensive one that includes your private cubicle, sauna and massage. When you finish you are offereda glass of morrocan tea as a complementary. In Morocco we say bessaha which means we wish you good health. Enjoy your stay in my beloved country and if you ever pass by London UK you are most welcomed in my house. ❤

Welcome to Morocco , beautiful family! The hammam experience is one of the best to live in Morocco but it has some tricks or steps to follow to enjoy it better, because they are not the same steps as a shower at home. In the Hammam of the neighborhood for men (the one I know) it costs 1 and 2 euros per person and you have to bring with you the "kis" the round comb "mechta" traditional soap "sabon beldi" normal soap and shampoo, you can buy them there. It usually has 3 rooms, one hotter than the other. You enter in swimsuit or underwear (you can not bathe totally naked as at home or as in European gyms). The first thing is to choose a place (better in the middle room which has an ideal temperature for my taste and if possible in a corner), clean well the 2 to 3 square meters that you are going to occupy or bring small chairs or plastic blanket to sit on. Then you have to fill the basins mixing hot and cold water (2 to 4 are lent at the entrance to the hammam and you have to pass them with water before using them or you can bring your own from home). They are left at the limits of the place where you are going to bathe as marking territory 😉. Now we start bathing, you put warm water all over your body and 1: you put the traditional soap (the brown paste) all over your body, you go to the hot room for about 10 to 15 minutes, this soap plus the heat help to peel off the dead skin and dirt from the body. 2: You go back to your place that you had prepared in the second room and surrounded by the basins and you wash very well the traditional soap before you start rubbing, there must be no soap left for the scrubber to work, otherwise it will slip! 3: start rubbing the whole body, especially on the face if the "kis" scrubber is hard because it can cause irritation (there are some scrubbers harder than others). The dead skin starts to come out in the form of dark paste/spaghetti, you rub well all over the body about 2 passes until no more dead skin comes out ( this point can be done alone if you have strength or you can pay a worker of the hammam " kessal or teyab " to rub you all over your body ( between 3 to 7 euros ) ) . 4: you shampoo and wash your hair 2 times and you put perfumed industrial soap and rub your whole body (very important to follow this order and not to start with shampoo and industrial soap because it will not leave the dead skin). 5: gather your things and go out to the living room and bring a basin filled with hot water, dry yourself with a towel and stay covered with it and sit with your feet inside the basin with hot water for 10 to 20 minutes (because being at a very high temperature the body needs time to release steam and cool down) if you go out and dry yourself and put your clothes directly, all your underwear will get wet by the steam released by the body, so you have to wait 15 minutes or so and dry well before putting clothes.

If it is winter and cold, after the hammam a snail soup that is sold near the hammam is good (it is not for everyone's tastes because it has more than thirty plants and is a bit strong) If it's summer, the best thing for me after the hammam is a freshly made orange juice and you have to drink it gently little by little (because the body is still very hot inside). Bsseha!!🎉🤗
