I used to own one of these. The HSV Avalanche was built on the Holden Adventra LX8 platform. If you could get past the really poor fuel economy, they made the best long haul cruiser. I often drove mine interstate and took it on off grid camping trips. Awesome tow vehicle, but again, if I towed my camp trailer, I would often take a jerry can of fuel as they really should have come with a long range fuel tank. Another really cool feature of the Adventra LX8 was the flip open rear tail gate window and factory self leveling rear air bag suspension that self adjusted it's ride height when a trailer was hitched. Overall a great car with plenty of power that was able to handle sandy beaches and bush tracks but limited due to its ride height and poor fuel economy.

The Adventra LX8 which the HSV is based on is also a good car, I have two I use for work, great fun on country dirt roads The 4 speed is certainly the weak point and will break. Some guy did add a 6 speed manual. The Adventra was the all round wagon Australia should have really jumped on. But you need the V8 the v6 lacks a bit.

Great review, glad you appreciate it! Ive had 3x HSV Avalanche wagons and currently have two here in VIC, a VY & VZ. Cool family cars, totally love them. Would be awesome with a 6 speed manual. Tows the van well though. That one is in great condition with low Kms, not many in that colour either. That one has a non standard cat back exhaust by the looks. Your a bit off with some of your facts though. Final Build numbers from Andrew Purcell at HSV HQ for both AUS & NZ are: VYII HSV Avalanche = 140 VYII HSV Avalanche XUV = 109 VZ Avalanche = 58 VZ Avalanche XUV = 95 The VY build numbers aren’t sequential, many were skipped, and customers ordered their preference but VZ were in order.

Everything Holden and HSV developed off the CrossTrack AWD platform was great. I've got an 05 Adventra LX8 with Avalanche brakes and suspension and an upgraded 4L60, and it goes hard, but I've also driven one of the Cross8 utes with a 6-speed auto conversion, and the extra 2 gears make a huge difference, even still in automatic.

Great video on a great car. I currently own a 2004 Holden VYII ADVENTRA LX8 which is basically the same car except for 35 kilowatts of power less than the HSV AVALANCHE, plus all the body kit and better brakes and 18 inch wheels. For their age they are a great all round go anywhere car with it’s All Wheel Drive and the trusty old LS1 V8. My ADVENTRA is currently about to clock over the 300,000kms mark and she is still going strong.

I remember when these came out and at the time Holden was trying to release something that would compete with the Territory, as it didn't have a vehicle that could function as a direct competitor. It wasn't an SUV and it was more than a car / wagon. Ford would hit back later with the Turbo Territory.
@RossReviewsau3 жыл бұрын
yeh ford did a better execution as we all can see. but the fact remains i love HSV for trying this and i think its so cool

My IS350 F Sport (My car is the same spec the one you reviewed) is a monster off the line and easily kills early LS-powered and Ford Boss-powered cars with the autos. I know it’s crazy, it’s cheaper to buy an F10 M5 than even a basic Clubsport Gen F atm and it’s cheaper to buy an F30 LCI 340i than a Series 2/3 Clubsport. Quite frankly I think you’d be crazy to buy a HSV over an M5 or 340i for the prices that people want in this covid market. That being said I’ve always wanted a HSV, but I couldn’t justify it for those prices, especially the VE based Series 2/3 models which are now a decade old.

I'm actually looking at getting one of these, it's a dealer one owner, in silver with a towbar, really low KMs, no off road, no towing always garaged, with backseat vid screens and I can change it over to leds & install a full after market setup for rear camera with all the bells and whistles (you know what I mean 😊) I'm thinking of trading my 2017 Subie 3.5 V6 with more KMs than the wagon has. It's a dream of a car the Sub & I love her but she just isn't my very last car (if you know what I'm saying) she's got amazing bells and whistles but I'm not 100% with her!!! I don't drive heaps so the fuel isn't an issue for me. I just really like these beasties & I live in the country so the AWD is a necessity. And hot damn these are sexy, any other model wouldn't get up my driveway, too low & our dirt roads round here can be cruel to low slung cars, plus the need to tow!!! So they want $29k for it, like I said full books, 2 keys and it's pretty slick!!! Any opinions will be great 👍 love yous...... Plus I'd get to sing "We love football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars!" again and loudly!!! 👍😁❤️

Having a six speed manual would not have been very good in the Adventra. In the 2wd wagon well that would be totally different . For the all wheel drive system used in the Adventra/ Avalanche the auto would really be the only worthwhile option as the whole transmission, engine, brake, and stability work hand in hand and all electronically controlled. The six speed or any other manual box would just not work unless you only take the kids to school and never went off the black stuff. Having said this , Its a shame GMH and HSV only used the 4l65e and never put in a decent auto.
@Rusted_Anarchy11 ай бұрын
Not completely true in the adventra group on Facebook one of the fellas did the work to convert his to a 6 speed manual from a ve he now sells the kits and there are about 10 guys doing the conversion now.
@ScatManAust11 ай бұрын
Yes, I have seen them. Probably a very good quality conversion, but still not Inegrated with the system to be an all-wheel drive vehicle with the power control of the complete system. It is the sum of the torque converter, gear ratios, brakes, and stability control, and all the sensors and computer to control it all that make up the Holden all-wheel drive system. Take away all that integration and you are pretty well left with a lame soft roader. Now if somehow, you could modulate the clutch and power into the computer system, then it may make some sort of sense. The clutch would not stand a chance in hell trying to cope with the needs of high torque at zero or near zero ground speed. Remember the torque converter will deliver 2.5-3 times the torque of the engine at stall for the transmission to work with in tough situations. One decent bog and the clutch would be sitting in the bell housing as clutches don't like slipping for long especially under high engine speed. All sounds good in theory at first glance but would only be useful on good dirt roads or bitumen. Get off the track and push the limits a little and the manual with clutch will show its true colours and will not cut it. Saying all this, I have a v8 addy and I would like a better auto in it. I also have a Maloo R8 with six speed box and it is great fun, but it is a REAL PIA in the city carnage and the addy would be exactly the same. I find the addy a pleasure to drive with the auto compared to the Maloo in heavy traffic. Now, what I do have is three Transit vans and three trucks and a LS1 and addy auto box to go into one of the trucks😁😁😁😁😁 I did a v6 conversion in one of the vans years ago and it was a match made in heaven. @@Rusted_Anarchy

The only thing that stuffed up apart from a few door handles was the computer located in the passenger footwell kick panel . Car started playing up one day , took it to the mechanics , he found an egg cup full of water in the computer , dried it out & put a protective plastic sleeve over it ( like au’s are standard ) & away it went again for another 100000klm. It really had a lot of power for the time , running full leaded super petrol , along with the most comfortable seats I have ever had in any car & standard suspension was rear coil sprung watts link live axle with close to limousine ride quality . The partner & I have owned many fords including a fairlane g220 & a couple of holdens since but we both agree the XF ghia was the best riding & most comfortable car of them all .

Bit of nostalgia for me, was our family car back in the day, dad took it to barbagallo for the supercars and managed to get Peter Brock to sign the dash, love this car

Do you still have it? If you are going to sell it... You can charge more because of the Brock signature...

been in one of these in a gravel pit, steering was a tad limp when compared to an AU but the grip holy fuck, imagine if the B series RTV falcons were AWD

That falcon would sound shit
@bigcazza52603 жыл бұрын
@@pauledwards9416 sound as in handling or engine noise? the 302 sounds mint with lukeys and extractors, and it turns in amazingly. or the rtv, ive driven an rtv, its stiffer than a normal falcon and hence can do AMAZING body roll drifts when you have momentum, for a workers rig an RTV awd barra falcon would be amazing. its probably not that hard to do if you grab a btr form a territory and the ascociated bits for awd
