🎤 Lyrics: Owl City - Fireflies 🎵
You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep
'Cause they'd fill the open air
And leave teardrops everywhere
You'd think me rude
But I would just stand and stare
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs
From ten thousand lightning bugs
As they tried to teach me how to dance
A foxtrot above my head
A sock hop beneath my bed
A disco ball is just hanging by a thread
(Thread, thread...)
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems
(When I fall asleep)
Leave my door open just a crack
(Please take me away from here)
'Cause I feel like such an insomniac
(Please take me away from here)
Why do I tire of counting sheep?
(Please take me away from here)
When I'm far too tired to fall asleep
(Ha-ha)
To ten million fireflies
I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes
I got misty eyes as they said farewell
(Said farewell)
But I'll know where several are
If my dreams get real bizarre
'Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar
(Jar, jar, jar...)
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems (when I fall asleep)
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
'Cause everything is never as it seems (when I fall asleep)
I'd like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep
Because my dreams are bursting at the seams

My son, when he was in grade 6 showed me this song. We used to listen to it together at bedtime. He's now 21 and has moved out on his own. He's a young Man now. It was hard to say goodbye, but I will always remember playing with him and singing this song. Take Care Facey, Love Always, Mum ❤

I distinctly remember sitting outside a café and eating ice cream together with my best friend as well as his mother and my own mom who had picked us up after school. It was a nice warm, springtime or early-summer day, we were joking around, gently ribbing the adults with our stupid teenage boy humor about how school (naturally) sucks and how we would (obviously) never become as boring when we get older. This song was playing in the background through the venue's audio system, and me and my friend were humming along. It's a fairly random memory, but one that brings back the feeling of a carefree youth. Life was good. Thankfully, everyone who was there that day is still around and doing well.

This song is both sad and invigorating at the same time. I think it's because it reminds me of the energy we used to have as kids that we can’t muster anymore. You feel it come rushing back with the chorus but it's just a memory and isn't really there - like a dream, as the song puts it.

I remember my uncle coming to visit me at the hospital... I was there for 1 year straight. And he showed me this song and got me earphones. And i used to listen to this for the whole night, in hope that the next day, the test is going to be negative of infection and i can go home... I cried to it, laughted to it, sung it and now I just found it... Im in tears. I am out of the hospital for a really long time and my health is a lot better now. Now im listening and I could tell how much the lyrics were relatable. They still are.. Just in a diffrent way

I guess it is innocent but it is about is struggles with a sleeping disorder though. I think the fireflies are supposed to represent sleeping pills.
@anafolie471
@anafolie471 3 жыл бұрын
@@kerryntaylor7215 tbh as an insomniac myself the fireflies can be a lot of things. It can be just his thoughts that make him awake during night, or even the "dots" that look like fireflies when we're with our eyes open in the dark. Although I personally interpret the fireflies as simply being his dreams that he has when hes finally asleep (since he sings "lit up the world as I fell asleep"/"But I'll know where several are if my dreams get real bizarre"), and that the reason he gets to amazed by the fireflies is because hes amazed and happy that he was finally able to fall asleep for some time. But again, that's just my personal interpretation as an insomniac lol
@DigitalXAddict
@DigitalXAddict 7 ай бұрын
@@kerryntaylor7215 Officially the fireflies are meant to represent shooting stars. But yeah the song overall is about insomnia, but not in a negatiive way, rather the typical "can't sleep, let's use this opportunity to stargaze!" So the song indirectly is about "making the best of a situation" (that's how I interpret the official explanation of the song). Positive through and through.

did you get something in that comment messed up? elementary school age is from 5 to 6, so that's 14-15 years ago. this song came out 13 years ago sorry when i see something that sounds wrong i tend to mention it edit: when i made this comment i misunderstood elementary as what is meant by the word kindergarten, i am now well aware that i made an interpretation error

This one time, my high school girlfriend was flipping through the radio, and she stopped on this song while it was about halfway through. It was my first time hearing the song, and I dug the fuck out of it. After it was over, she again flipped through the dials, and found the song playing on a different station, and we cheered and jammed to it again. That moment was the happiest moment I have ever had, and probably will have.

as a kid, i used to catch fireflies and keep them in a jar. theyd only last a week though. i remember talking to them each day pretending they could hear me. I pretended that they had conversations with me. when i was sad or mad, they would always comfort me without comforting me. i remember showing them games and pretending that they could play with them. it was a few years ago when i heard this song and when i first heard this song, i cried. i cried for no reason. but it reminded me of those fun memories. those glorious memories that ill remember for the rest of my life. this song will always have a special place in my heart, if i played with fireflies or not. we are too lucky to have owl city. that band is so awesome.

This song is my childhood. Not only did I love hearing it on the radio as a kid, but it makes me remember the times when I'd go out in the yard on a summer night and watch the fireflies till I had to come in. Man, this nostalgia is beautiful and painful at the same time.

Wow. I remember all of the good times my neighbor and I would have, late summer nights, rocking out to this song as we played outdoors and had sleepovers and you know, were just being kids. This song hits me really hard at the moment, transporting me back to a time where I was happy, and life was simple. Here I am now, about to turn 18, longing for the old days where things were simply better, before ... life happened. Things weren't supposed to turn out this way, I wasn't prepared to lose everything due to some degenerative chronic disorder that tuns kn my family. I was able to handle the mental health crisis many teens hit, and am doing better in that regard, but man have I been blindsided. I miss those days with my neighbor so much. Remember when the world was so much fun, when everything was interesting and exciting, when you could actually smile and laugh, living in the moment, being who you are without any other care in the world? Back when I could just run, move, go ride bikes, play tag, draw with chalk, do the stupidest "challenges" we made for each other? I have some very strong memories connected with this song, which is why hearing it hurts so much. I remember watching fireworks on the 4th of July, listening to the speaker blaring this song. I remember looking up at the stars one summer night, this song blaring in my head, grateful I'd made it back to the "base" and was safe because the neighborhood kids were all playing hide-and-seek-tag and we were too sneaky for them, so they all teamed up on me and my neighbor friend. I remember my neighbor was so obsessed with it, we made an entire dance routine to this song and performed it to our parents. I remember having a sleepover, sitting in her room late at night, messing with our stuffed animals, listening to this song over the speakers of her iPad. I remember laying in my own bed at night, listening to this song on loop, my mind blossoming with the images described in the song. I remember when my neighbor found a parody of this song we laughed over WAY too much. I remember when I saw my first firefly, on vacation to Vermont, and I finally understood the scene the song described. I remember jumping in the bouncy castle, trying to touch the ceiling with my friend at our community block party, the song almost blasting my ears off from over those speakers they set up right next to the bouncy house. I remember being at peace, content with life, willing to roll with the good and bad times, able to be happy. I still remember all of the lyrics. The magic of this song has not faded, even if the rest of the life I knew around it did. Thank you so much for this song. Music is one part of myself that I *can* preserve. I'm crying now, this is too bittersweet for me, too many happy memories, back when it was all okay. Why can't it be okay.. why did it have to end like this

@@KDragoness I understand your pain I am more of a modern child so I'm not as knowledgeable on the whole thing but thanks for putting this. It makes sense, life is a lot more complicated than back then as you said it was peaceful life was full of freedom in which you could do (almost) anything. Anyways I did read the whole thing because I'm kinda weird and like when people really talk about things peacefully, goodbye and have a good life.

@@FrighteningScares Yeah, growing up is difficult as the world becomes more mundane and less exciting. It stings me in particular though because I'm sick and will stay sick- I'm already considered handicapped and my collagen protein will continue to degenerate :( Most memories of this songs have movement and energy at the core, and I don't and won't have either of those for the rest of my life unless someone develops a cure, rest in piece my perfect transcript (I was ready to be valedictorian before this onset despite everything else going on in life, 2nd semester 11th grade at a rigorous college-prep school lol) and all of the plans for my future. I missed school to the point they tried to call me truant and kicked me out. So all of my peers are moving on without me this May, and I'm at a special school for the district rejects like me. I have no energy and can't think with the pain this disorder causes, both physical and emotional. So I wanted my high school diploma? To go to college, get a job, find a significant other? Travel, explore, volunteer, indulge in my (many) hobbies? It's almost funny to think I'd made plans. Thankfully I can still type on mobile or with a flat keyboard, have to make sure my fingers don't dislocate... I can technichally still write my novels, and I can do craft stuff and once my elbow heals (nerve damage, long story, long recovery) since small movements aren't too painful and don't use up all of my stamina, but I don't have much overall energy to do either of those things with, I usually sleep or play stupid games on my phone because that's all I can physically do.

@@KDragoness I have never seen anyone other than you who has been hit by so many hindrances during their time, I'm sorry to hear that. (I thought my school life was tough trying to stay top tier in my classes) You have had things happen that have completely stopped you from progressing in life. I am not the wisest person ever but I can tell you now that you can keep going, don't give up because then you will never have a chance to find a way out of the pit your in. ( I'm sure you already know this) You may be stuck in a position where you feel as if nothing will change, as if it's all over but it's not persevere be determined and maybe one day a cure will be made, but if not there are many other things you can do in life that also can be lucrative/fun to your liking. As I've said, you have probably heard all of this before but I just want to say i'm sorry again because it's awful to see what situation you are in but at least you are still here, living life not necessarily to the fullest but to a degree. Some people may have already given up already but you haven't. But I digress... Continue fighting.

This song came out when I was 10 years old back when life was simple, carefree and I felt happy all the time - I made myself believe that planet Earth turned slowly. Now I'm just a ball of depression who hates the world and the unfairness of life - please take me away from here. Time has changed everything. I miss my grandma more than anything too - I got misty eyes as she said farewell.
