This is long, but it's one of my racing memories that happened when i was 14 or 15 around 1985. Like Ryan, my dad was a big part of my racing even though he didn't drive. He worked on and drag raced cars in the 1950's and was also an engineer so I learned from him how to make a car drive on that fine edge of almost out of control. Those kind of races, like the one in this video, are a lot of fun and the following is one of my own favorites. My first year of racing was at my home dirt track in California owned by a guy who people called "The King of the Oval". I was just about to enter my sixth month of racing and this particular night I was battling to qualify with one of the track's team drivers. I TQ'd and the team driver qualified second, but the team driver had to go to work so he passed his car off to the track owner, Mr. "King of the Oval", and when I saw him walking up to the driver's stand carrying the other guy's car I knew I was going to have a tough race ahead of me. I didn't have experience on my side, so my plan was to drive hard but drive smart and in the back of my head I was figuring that losing to "The King" wouldn't be too bad. For half the race I had the track owner on my back bumper just waiting and pressuring me into making a mistake. We came up on back markers and I got around a few of them cleanly and he got around them like they weren't even there. At one point soon after that I came through turns one and two and two back traffic cars were split with a car length between them, I pulled out of the corner right up to the back bumper of the front marker and slid right between them both and passed on the outside down the back straightaway. I was shocked I made it through and tried to give a glance back to see what the "King" was going to do and he tried the same maneuver (at this point I vaguely recall thinking that if he makes through then I have no way of winning this race) and he wound up hitting both cars and losing all kinds of time which left me home free for the rest of the race. I could have waited for him to catch back up, but it wasn't a risk I was willing to take and I was already pretty mentally exhausted so it felt good to just tune out and drive the car. After turn marshaling I went back to the pit and was packing up in disbelief of winning that race by taking a chance on a pass that I probably shouldn't have taken. It was just desperation and pressure and the a quick calculation of speed, time, and distance between cars and it turned out in my favor. My dad and I were almost done packing up when the track owner came by our pit area, put a tee shirt and a jacket on our table, and said "team meeting will be Tuesday evening." I've had many close and fun races over my ten plus years, but that one was a special one and it is the only trophy I've kept from over 30 years ago. I have about a handful of similar race memories that were fun and few big wins too, but the above will always be my favorite racing memory. Years later after gaining a lot of racing experience behind me, I would never have made that pass, I probably would have went wide and let the other driver have the lead and then let him deal with traffic and me pressuring him into a bad pass.

After sitting as a shelf-queen for about five years, I'm finally going to start running my Team Durango DEX410 V4. RIGHT after I built it, the company closed its doors like 4 months later, so I didn't bother putting electrics in it, fearing not being able to get parts. But what good is that doing me? Nothing. So here I am, rebuilding the shocks an diffs (been sitting with oils an greases for years), just awaiting my new LRP setup an Ti turnbuckles. Running Duratrax C2 Equalizers on all fours. Can't wait to get her moving! Unfortunately, here in NC there are NO tracks, an the nearest hobby store is a good 45 min drive, so it looks like I'll be mainly just bashing it around. Also a bummer that I know no one that is into RCs at all around here, other than planes an helis (which I also dabble in).

i have been trying to find a hobby for years. something to get out of the house that wasn't work or the bar. Air soft, Paintball, Rugby, Soccer. Golf. all have their strengths, but they also had this huge crowd of snobs. RC is fun and affordable. It also has a crowd of snobs, and it is 100% short course racers. Bashers, Drifters, Crawlers have all been nothing but nice and accepting. its only short course that tells you you are doing something wrong when you are trying to have fun and not take it so seriously., but the snob community in RC is so small that you might as well not count it. people like Mr. Harris here are why this hobby is great. they are at the top. for them it's not just a hobby, but a passion. yet they don't talk down to casuals and they aren't condescending. they don't recommend getting better. they suggest improvements. this hobby is so fun, and it is made better by a hugely accepting community.

@@zachwhite9854 I thought this would be a cheaper RC adventure. Turns out I'm spending more on each RC car to run the track than most RC planes, even big ones, I have. Dang it. The best thing though, is that if you crash, it's only a cheap part to fix instead of a total loss. Or close to it anyways. So Initial investment is high, but maintenance is a lot lower. Kind of.. Tires and track fees do ad up quickly. LOL

Hey Ryan. Quick heads up: don’t run the RX 491 Sanwa receiver. It blows up ESC’s. It’s an issue that Sanwa hasn’t publicly announced yet. A simple version of what happens is that it rapidly varies amp draw from the BEC on the ESC, slowly burning out the ESC until it dies. It happened to me and it’s happened to a few people in my club. No issues with other Sanwa receivers.
