Both of my uncles design and built bridges all over the world. When I went on holiday with then as a kid, they got us kids to chop down some trees and they build a bridge across a river by the camp site. The locals in the area were like wow.. it completely changed their lives.

as a michigan resident, i can attest to the heroic scope of the mackinac bridge, which molly mentioned as the largest in the western hemisphere. driving across can be a little scary at times, you're unable to see the end and the wind across the water and bridge often make your car feel as though it will blow right off the side! thanks molly, that was fascinating, as ever :)

Wow. I was just thinking about bridges today--how ppl from SF would have to travel ALL around, through San Jose, just to get to Marin if they didn't want to travel by water. Bridges are cool inventions, and some of these modern ones are REALLY awesome! :D

Zhengzhou and Xian". As you could have said, "you guessed it" :-)

Its a pity you did not include the Tees transporter bridge in Middlesborough (pronounced Middlesbrer), England. It carries a gondola across the river Tees capable of transporting up to 9 cars at a time. While probably not the only transporter bridge, it is the most famous.
